I am getting a laptop soon, and I was wondering if you can transfer your itunes collection from computer to computer using your ipod. Can I plug in my 20gb to my laptop, after loading itunes and have all of the songs transferred??? I have been wondering this for some time. If I cant do it this way, how can I???

Thanks

I dont have itunes. I know though, that if you network your computers together, using a router, or a switch, you can just FTP your music, from your current comp, to the new one, then, just import into itunes.

what Apple recommends you do is
1. take the music off of your ipod
2. enable disc use in the itunes menu.
3. put music and files on your ipod through the windows explorer

Remember Music put on your ipod by itunes cannot be taken off. What they say to do is basically put it on there as data.

you can use it as a portable hard drive, or if everything's on there as songs, just go to iPodLounge and download PodUtil or one of the like services that takes music off of your iPod.

You guys are really making this more complex than it has to be.

Put your laptop on the network that your computer is on and....

Start>My Network Places>Click On SharedDocs on your laptop>Click and drag your music folder on to the shared laptop window and wait a while for it to transfer through the network.

That's the easiest way in my opinion.

Your network is what all of your computers are connected to. How many computers do you have? I have 5 computers all on my network. Each computer has a network name. So I just drag and drop files that I want to put on to one computer from another.

Do you have "My Network Places" in the start menu? I'm using XP and it's on there.

I have 3 comps, but not on the same network. I am not really sure my comp. situation. I am 15 and my dads friend set it up. How do I get my laptop onto the same network. Do i need to have the same internet connection to be on the same network???

Thanks

This is just me, but liIli would use Anapod Explorer. It's $25, but it's well worth the money for what it can do.

You install it, and it turns your iPod into a sort of drive accessible through Windows Explorer or My Computer. You can drag and drop to and from the iPod, as well as view the contents of the iPod just the way iTunes does - by artist, album, genre, etc. Nothing complicated. You can install the software onto ALL your computers - you activate it through paying for the software (it generates a token you use - it's very easy once you see the screenshots and such on the site), and you can activate your iPod on as many computers as you want.

It's up to you, but this is the most failsafe way to do it IMHO, and it requires nothing besides their software and $25. You can still use your iPod in iTunes. It's very user-friendly and a lot easier than doing anything janky with your iPod, network, or computers.

And to everyone else, yes I know that the methods of which you speak are all also very easy (and free, blah), but looking at this guy's posts, I don't think he's up to that challenge. Think user-friendly.

Software is here

http//www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/

You pay for it online and download it online and all that.

You can also try EphPod, which has its own interface (as opposed to My Computer/Windows Explorer integration), but I believe it also supports dragging and dropping to and from the program.

You can find it at www.ephpod.com, but apparently their host got hacked very recently, and the site is currently down.

Copypod is also a freeware application that makes it easy to backup your music and copy it to another computer.

http//www.copypod.net/

Hope that helps!

this looks good, but what would you use to buy music? And could I use it to transfer from my music sollection from my PC to my laptop?

Anapod uses any file format the iPod can use. You can continue to buy your music on iTunes.

Now, iTunes music has DRM crap on it, which means that you need to authorize the copy of iTunes on the other computer to play the music. As far as I know, you can copy the music to your hard drive using Anapod, and then copy it all into the iTunes library like you would any other audio file, and then iTunes should notify you that the music is DRMed and you need to authorize that copy of iTunes to play your music.

I have no experience with iTunes-purchased music, however, because all my music is ripped from audio CDs in MP3 format using WMP10 or CDex. The above information is just an assumption based on my experiences with other DRMed, purchased-online music (not from iTunes).

I never buy music. 99 cents a song is insane. But that's just me. )

[edit]
Oh, and if you wanted to copy your music to another computer, just do it with the iPod. I'm assuming all your music is on your iPod, so just install Anapod Explorer on the other computer, it will tell you to paste in the activation token they email you when you purchase the software, activate your iPod, and you're good to go - drag 'n drop away!

I'm still a bit confused but that sounds pretty good. I may give it a try. So when i get new songs in itunes, they automatically go to anapod?
