Okay, so I'm getting a GPS system. It's a Sony, (getting it for free), it's got a built in audio jack. Will the sound come out of the GPS unit, or the car?

If not the car...then read the following

What can I buy something that someone can install an integrated iPod thing into the car so my iPod can sit in it and play the music, maybe even possibly show me the songs that are playing or have a separate control thing so i can control the ipod?

thanks.

Look in your ads for Circuit city/bestbuy. I bought a JVC KD-PDR30 for about $180 with free install and it has CD/MP3, iPod, Aux, FM-AM, remote and all that shit.

I wouldn't buy one of those iTrips or anything unless you don't mind audio quality loss. For me, the iTrip wouldn't even work with the stereo that was in my car (it wasn't stock, it was a blaupunkt).

No, see, I don't wanna install a new panel or anything. I wanna integrate it into my current stereo. It already has bose stereo stuff in there. I mean if I hook up my iPod to the car with one of those cassette things, doesn't it not sound good? I kind of want it so there's no wire blocking my panels, and the wire goes into the back of the panels.

A new panel will not affect your speakers, a new panel is a new panel. Just because the panel might say "bose" on it, doesn't mean that a different panel (if you invest wisely) won't produce the same sound. Most panels have the capability to output high audio quality, and it is only the speakers that really affect what you hear.

Sure the tape isn't bad sounding, but audio quality is not as good as if it came straight from your iPod., and you can hear the tape spinning (unless you have it loud).

Bose isn't all that, anyway. And cassette adapters are better than FM modulators, but only barely. You won't get good audio quality without a direct connection.

If your car headunit has an external CD changer control that is not being used, or you don't intend to use, then you can find something like this[=http//www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=305250&i=581PA15TOY&tp=120]this to convert the changer input to an iPod control. That's what I did in my Sequoia -- it has an internal CD changer so the external changer input was unused. Now I can control my iPod with my stereo controls (switch playlists, skip next/previous song, and of course volume). Another benefit of the one I bought is it also provides aux inputs, so I was able direct connect my XM receiver as well.

Barring that, if your headunit has an aux input, then you can use a 3.5mm headphone cable to connect your iPod. The audio quality will be the same as the control unit above, you just won't have control through your car stereo for anything but volume -- you'll have to navigate through your music on the iPod itself.

The Bose unit has a CD player inside, so what can I do with that? I don't remember if the car had an AUX input on it or not.

Why don't you figure that out by yourself first so you don't waste people's time? We have no idea if it's a portable unit or an in-dash unit and how you're going to integrate/use it, only you can know this by checking out what model it is. Why not come back for help once you know exactly what you have?

You can't do anything with the internal CD player. Did you read my post? Your headunit must have an external CD changer port, many if not most, do. If the Bose is factory, go to Crutchfield and look up your car by year, make, and model, and pick the factory Bose stereo. They'll tell you what it is compatible with it. If it's not a factory system, then you'll have to look it up on Bose's website, or pull it out and look at it yourself.

Some headunits have aux inputs on the back but they aren't wired to anything, so you have to pull the unit out of the dash and connect to it (usually L/R RCA plugs). Again, there's no way anybody here can tell you since we don't know anything about what you have.

Just gather your information and get online to figure out your options -- it isn't that hard.

I think TravMan spent most of his adolescence working on those pecks, abs, biceps, triceps, while we were conducting L33TZ0RZ activities...

this is funny... You know when you spell a "word" wrong, its highlighted "red"....

like if you type "TravMan" it's red underlined in this forum... but if you type "hax0ring" it's considered correct spelling, so is L33T, Sux0rz... wow.. I could go on.

It's not the forum, it's Firefox's built-in spell-checker roll n00b

@FOAFY You might want to check out Dension IceLink. I don't know if they still manufacture units, but they make a product that does exactly what you are looking for. It plugs into the CD changer port on your existing headunit.

Those are said to work great, but won't integrate with your car stereo controls -- you use the separate little control pod. Also note that this model is discontinued and can be found for as little as $20 in places (according to more than one of the Amazon user comments). Someone said they have (or are coming out with) a newer model with a color display.

If you get one, try to install it via aux or CD changer ports, and not via FM modulation. If you have no choice, at least used wired FM modulation (connect in-line with your antenna) rather than wireless.

There should be an AUX port in the back of the Bose panel, correct? Also, where can I get this for $20? That would be unbelievable! The newer version is out and costs $400.
Nevermind, eBay. Hah.
