How do you put up cool avatars

Hey, I can only get the gallery avatars to work.

Even when I find a photo that is small enough and is a jpg
and it says it uploaded sucessfully the pics never show up???

How does everyone else do it... some of you even have animated ones, and large ones.

Why won't mine work!!!
