Well, I need to start going to the gym all of the time. I hate that I'm so skinny. I barely gain any weight, and I eat a lot. I know there's like protein shakes and stuff, but like, can I just drink those and gain weight and muscle? Or do I also have to work out? And if I work out, do I drink it before, or after?

come on Foafy, are you serious? Do you think protein is just some miracle drink that throws pounds of muscle onto your body? It doesn't work like that little buddy. The way I understand it is that when you work out you are ripping, tearing and breaking down your muscle fibers and protein aids in the healing and repair of those fibers. When they are broken, the repair that they go through makes them stronger. Protein helps this whole process.

That's why you're supposed to pound a shake after you work out because that is when your muscles are destroyed and could use some supplementation to repair more quickly.

yeah, i remember you saying that you were a pretty skinny chap, and you were trying to put on some mass right? Might I suggest that 3 shakes a day is borderline excessive? Any extra protein you put in your body (any more than roughly 1-1/2g per pound of body weight) just gets pissed out. Keep it to two on days you work out, i'd go with one right after the workout and one in the morning, and on days you don't work out cut it down to one in the morning as just a supplement. You need to make sure you're eating properly. Balanced diets with lots of chicken, lean beef, milk, cheese, greens, and tons of water are going to get you more gains than pounding an extra useless protein shake will. You'll save money too. Eating is important. You're not getting the balanced carbs and calories you need if protein shakes are your main source of food intake.

I've been doing biceps and ab exercises for the past 2 months or so. Nothing major but just some stuff I can do at home whenever I get bored. I've been seeing a pretty good turnout for just about 20 to 30 minutes a day but I feel like I can do more. What can I do to build mass instead of what I am doing right now, just getting more tone and very little mass? The automatic response is to eat more but I eat like a pig and I can't do cardio right now so it's just been building in the wrong places it seems.

FOAF, the best thing to do is just get some weights for your dorm and just do them in private if you feel embarrassed about your size or you don't want to go to the gym. Just get a dumbbell to start out if you want to start small for little money and little work.

I'm 175 6'1" and I'm only looking to get to 190. If I were you I wouldn't want to go over 200 lbs. If more accumulates later in life it'll be harder to get off.

Just so you know. One year ago I was scrawny as hell. When I started working out, the heaviest weight I used at the gym was 15 lbs (and in some cases, 5 lbs). Now I'm relatively strong.

What you need to do is eat at least twice as much as you are eating now. You should eat until you're completely full, then down a protein shake; eat a full meal every three hours.

EDIT Also, weight is not indicative of strength. I've absolutely transformed my body, and even after growing 2" I've only gained about 5-10 lbs in the past year.
