I believe I have an excellent idea. I spoke to my parents about it, they said I should go through with my idea, and I researched it, and it doesn't seem to exist.
What processes do I go through to patent my idea and market a successful product? (Or try to get in touch with a company [that would be of good use to them] to sell my idea and market it for me, as long as I get paid)

Don't think you'll get much help here... contact a lawyer to help you? You don't want people to steal your idea

I've also had great ideas I think would take off that don't exsist but don't have the time to pursue. Def look into it if you think it will succeed

My parents agreed that it has a chance of possibility and success. ) They were completely serious too.

Unless you have the financial backing, you'll never patent your idea. It takes thousands of dollars and just as long in time to patent things. That's why most people get suckered by "we want inventors now" programs. You should just sell your product without a patent and see where it takes you. Otherwise, sell the idea as intellectual property, I don't know how to do that though.

Sorry FOAF, I already tried. Too many people complained that they couldn't take them on walks. (

The patent process is a very long and costly one. If you get a patent attorney to help you, it'll probably cost at least $10,000. And it might take 2-3 years to receive the patent, assuming that it's even granted in the first place.
Then you have to manufacture, market and successfully sell it, which is a much bigger task than the patent stuff.

Please don't make up statistics about attorney costs. The patent process is a long and complicated one though.
This is a great book and widely cited as a great place to start your process. http//www.nolo.com/product.cfm/ObjectID/139AEDE9-69A0-4810-A7A87D2AD5422664/310/
One thing you should do (and this is not legal advice) is to write a very, very detailed description of your idea, print it out and sign it with a a witness, and date the paper. This could serve as proof in the future of the idea and timeframe of idea origin.
