Anyone got an amazon kindle? What are your thoughts? Contemplating getting one, but everyday I come up with new reasons i want it or new reasons i don't want it.

I want one, but I can't justify $400 for it. Half that, maybe.

The reviews I've read have been very favorable, and I totally dig the "free" EVDO downloads and surfing ability.

TechCrunch has had a few decent reviews. I can't imagine buying one, for one thing I like turning the pages of a book, or feeling the paper in my hands, wiping the ink from the paper off my fingers... However, taking 19 books with me on vacation, and only carrying (effectively) one, would be awesome.

Hmm...hadn't heard of this device before.

+ EV-DO (even though no local network for me ( )
+ Newspaper/Mag. subscriptions
+ Okay battery life

- Looks huge (ugly)
- Expensive
- Only DRM'ed content -- for now
- No PDF support

I just hope it doesn't run on Windows ?

[quoteceb783b5c2="ajasax"]Only DRM'ed content -- for now[/quoteceb783b5c2]

already fixed, from what I've read.

Gigante

Yeah it isn't only DRM'd content.

Another cool thing is you can have Wikipedia. You can download entire Wikipedia for 4.9GB and always have it on you, even offline. Seems pretty cool.

You could also get some school textbooks on it for those in school, which is much easier than lugging around lots of books, but the pictures/graphs are not as good.

Hmmm...kindles4free.com?

Gigante

12-12-2007 13:14:11

free is definitely more appealing than $400.

Gigante

Are you rolling your eyes about ebayers or are you not suprised kindle is popular

I kind of thought this thing would flop, I'm shocked anyone would pay 400 much less 900

At ebayers! The kindle has a lot of flaws and a new version will come out soon enough. To pay more for something that will be back ordered for a few days is crazy. Then again most ebayers are crazy shock

JKirk

18-12-2007 22:26:19

I'm not surprised it's selling so well, I'm just surprised that it's sold out at Amazon... shock There's not much that sells out at Amazon much less something that they produce. (Aside from gaming systems or something of the like)

Who would have predicted to stock up on Kindle's for resale?!

The only thing I have a problem with the device is where they put the Page Up & Page Down buttons. What if you want to grip the book on its sides? You're going to be constantly jumping pages.

If they fix the design so that you can comfortably handle the book, I'll probably be on board for its 2G model.

I saw that problem on a lot of the reviews. (

I suppose I would be excited about a Kindle if I didn't already have a Sony PRS-500 (purchased for only $60 after signing up for a credit card). The Sony may not be able to connect to a bookstore wirelessly, but it sure is sexier. Besides that, there are tons of tools available at mobileread.com to make PDF's look good, download news feeds, hack it, etc. I don't know if there is as much software development available for the Kindle.

One reason why the bookstore connection doesn't particularly appeal to me is because I find about 98% of my ebooks online for free. Even if I had a Kindle, I'd mostly be loading it with free ebooks...

Don't you need to "hack" the Kindle to do that?
What else can Kindle do/view except buying from Amazon.com and viewing?
