After school today, I was walking with my friend to his car and we noticed his window was down. He thought he just left it down but it turns out some dickface broke his back-right window and stole his iPod. He has no enemies and this was purely a random crime because 4 other cars got robbed. I feel bad because he gives me a ride to school everyday and a ride home, so I just wanna help him however I can. I'm just wondering a few things...

1. Our senior parking lot has a security guard who is supposed to prevent stuff like this from happening. Where the hell was he? Can my friend use this to get retribution, perhaps from the school?

2. Around how much does it cost to replace a window? He drives a Mazda Tribute.

3. He filed a police report, anyone know the chances of the bastard(s) actually getting caught?

I plan to help him get another iPod so I guess I gotta get back into the business. Just kinda wanted to rant and ask those questions. Thanks for the help.

Restitution? I doubt it. You can't sue the city if you get mugged and a police officer didn't see it.

His best bet would be to call glass places nearby.

All depends on the evidence. Chances are there won't be much, so unless the guy is caught in the act later, and confesses to this crime, I wouldn't count on it.

The question is, was his iPod left in plain view? If so, why?

Sorry about your friends car man. I would definitely use the fact that the security guard was not around to try and get retribution. I'm not sure of the cost to replace a window, but check junkyards for the best prices. I wouldn't get my hopes up too high for them actually catching the guy but you never know.

It wasn't necessarily in plain view. He has a slot for it on his central console where he always puts it and you can only see it if you're really looking. One of my other friends got robbed as well and his iPod was stolen from his glove compartment. As far as I'm concerned, my friend having his iPod in plain view should not be a concern because his doors were locked, and the thought of some asshole breaking his window in broad daylight in a school parking lot that is supposed to be watched by a security guard just never crossed his mind. He's been leaving the iPod there for months and his doors are always locked. Today was just shitty luck.

Regardless, the security obviously wasn't doing his job if he let 4 robberies happen in the matter of an hour or so in the parking lot that he was supposed to be watching closely. The parking lot is not that expansive, so if he was paying attention, he would have definitely noticed the robbers. I doubt my friend will get any compensation from the school, but honestly, that security guard deserves to be fired.

You're right, he shouldn't have to hide his iPod, or take it with him. But I prefer that to being robbed. If it's portable, I take it with me.

Regarding the security guard -- I don't see how he'd be financially liable, even if he wasn't doing his job.

My moms car got broken into about a month ago. The glass cost about $70 and they wanted about $150 to replace it, but my dad did it himself.

As for catching the guy, theres probably 0% chance unless he does it again at the same lot and someone is watching him. Even then nobody will know it was him for the other break ins. Cops arent gonna follow this, so just move on.

I'm not saying he's financially liable, I'm just saying he's an asshole who I'm now finding out is notorious for sucking at life.

I live in Toms River, NJ, one of the safest cities in America, and stuff like this happening at my high school is just ridiculous, especially with a security guard on duty.

Most of the time, even if it is the school's fault, they won't take responsibility for their actions and own up. It sucks big time.

On the other hand, I'm really sorry for what happened. Thiefs need to burn in hell.

That's why I never leave anything in my car and I leave it unlocked. Windows are expensive!

That really sucks, but hopefully the security guard feels pretty bad about it.

I always keep my iPod in my pocket so our renegade security men don't steal it.

Had my car window busted out right in front of my house once, they used duct tape and then shattered it making no mess. Then they took my coat from the trunk, jumper cables and the faceplate off my radio - kids, lol. Insurance paid for the window and the faceplate replacement. They said they couldnt do much because of it - but your friend def needs to file police report and then call his insurance company with it to get it fixed.

From the stories I've heard from people around my school, these security guards are known dbags. They take bribes to look the other way and I wouldn't be surprised if they they did it. Most of em just scream PEDOPHILE too.

Thanks for the help and comments everyone.

How would your security guard NOT hear the glass break. Im sure it was pretty loud.

Happened to me a couple months ago.

That's why my parents always nag me to not keep [b711007fab5]any[/b711007fab5] electronics whatsoever in plain sight -- once making me hide a cell phone charger before leaving the car ) Tinting is also a good thing in this regard. However, none of this really matters if the thief is determined to break windows and steal whatever s/he finds.

All you can really do is say "fuckin people.." its sad that you have to load up your pockets with anything you dont want someone to take or else your "asking for it"

Sorry about your friends car but unfortunitly police/security/school/city don't give a shit and bluntly put they will give you some version of a go fuck yourself.

ajasax, his windows are tinted.
zr2152, like I said, they're incompetent douchebags.

Just an update. I talked to a lot of people around the school and found that a ton of cars have been broken into over the last week or so. One kid had his car and house windows smashed and another got 3 of his windows broken. Them and a few other players on the varsity football team got jacked. The search web has been extended to a ton of people now from what I'm hearing. Another friend of mine who leaves school 7th period says he saw this kid that dropped out last year leaving the parking lot around the same time. This kid is a straight up waste of life and it's very possible that it was him. As of now, that's all we know, but this should be interesting. If this kid is ever found, he's gonna get the living shit kicked out of him by half the varsity football team.

That sucks. My apartment has very little parking because it is a small complex so I used to have to park behind the building on this side street. Anywhoo, they broke my back right window and took my cd case which had about 200 cds in it or so since I was little. I didn't have anything else so they just took everything out of the glove compartment and glass was everywhere. It was a little side back window since I have an Accord coupe and that was like $200! Also, my girlfriends car got broken into twice and my roommate's girlfriend's car got broken into as well. No incidents in a while now that parking is improved but I can't wait to finish school and move back to the nice safe city of Sugar Land.

On top of it, why didn't an alarm go off?

Another option to consider is checking the schools security cameras (if there are any). That might help in trying to find out who did it.

If it's that many people whose cars have been broken into, why hasn't the school done anything about it?
I would also check to see your schools terms about parking in their parking lot. See if it says they're liable for any break-ins or damage to cars.

I would be surprised if they had ANY liability whatsoever.

I know our school, which was a small school (my class had 69) had cameras in both of our parking lots, i'd figure bigger schools with more violence/ criminal activity would have cameras watching their parking lots...
but the school still probably holds no liability for anyone's property in teh parking lot...

Apparently the school is going to reimburse my friend with some money. I'm not sure if they're going to cover all of the costs, but he's getting something from them. Also, the hunt for the jackass is going well. Lots of leads and suspects, all douchebags in their own way.

That's good to hear.
Let us know how much money they're actually getting!

He should use the money from the school to hire an assassin. Sneak up on the kid, slice the heel of his foot, and then ground and pound him into submission. Then, when he thinks it is all over, put butter on his groin and sit him in the fire ant nest for 3 hours.

He doesn't need to pay anyone. So many people wanna kill the kid(s), and he wants to get a piece of the action.

Sweet news, my friend got full compensation for all of the damaged and stolen property. He got $415 from the school.
