Here's my situation. I have wanted one of those new gaming consoles for years now, but I can't play them because of my disabilities. I don't have complete function in my hands. I can use a regular gamepad, but I can't use those analog sticks. Well I have just found out that I can play the xbox360. I had a 12 year old kid telling me some things I would need, but he wasn't really clear. Will I get everything I need when I buy the game console, or will I have to buy other things to go with it. I'll only need one controller. If you respond, remember this. The last game system I bought was a sega genisis. I have no clue how the newer ones work.

Thanks for your help.

It's really not much more complex than the Genesis was, in all honesty. (In fact, the Genesis + Sega CD + 32X setup that my brother and I had was infinitely more complicated than my 360 is now.)

As long as you're happy with the picture quality you'll get with component cables, you should be all set to go out of the box.

I'm assuming you mean [i816797193a]composite[/i816797193a] cables? Because component cables give you the highest quality image from a 360. ;)

(Yes I know some 360's have HDMI, but picture quality is not appreciably different between HDMI and component unless you're going with an HDMI-only 1080p resolution).

Yeah, I second guessed myself on which it was. But isn't VGA better than component too? I thought HDMI > VGA > component > composite. It's been a long time since I researched/cared much about this though...

Hi lee,

Yes the 360 would come with everything you need out of the box. It would come with one controller. The only thing you would need is a game you would like to play )

I forgot the 360 did VGA, but VGA and component carry pretty much the same color signals, except that VGA supports more bandwidth -- which is totally moot on an NTSC 1080 device & display. For a PC output, yeah VGA would typically be better, but given the limits of the 360's output you don't gain that much. Combined with the fact that many TV's don't handle VGA well at all (overscan issues and such), many folks would get a preferable picture with component I would expect.

HDMI and DVI are the same thing, with HDMI just adding audio and heavier DRM support. Technically, being digital, they would produce a better quality signal than an analog component/VGA signal. But the reality of the situation with current TV-quality output requirements is that it makes little difference. It's much the same as taking an LCD computer monitor that supports both DVI and VGA. While some really crappy videocards or monitors might show a cleaner image with DVI, quality equipment is going to show little real difference at modest resolutions. Most people can't discern any difference at all between DVI and VGA quality at the most typical desktop resolutions. Now get up into more bandwidth-intensive resolutions like 1920x1200 and up, and I would expect DVI to pull ahead.

I thought he was asking about a controller without analog controls. Like an arcade stick, which I believe they have for the 360

He was. Keith just mentioned the video connection, which got us sidetracked a bit.
