It seemed to me that 180K members was low for Oink. This Reuters [=http//uk.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUKL2315584520071023]This Reuters article suggests it was 180K donating members

[quote9f8e1c2a41]An estimated 180,000 members of the site paid "donations" via debit or credit cards, ensuring that they could continue to access the site and its catalogue of music and other media.[/quote9f8e1c2a41]

Wow, I can only say I'm surprised it took this long. Being run from Britain, it's not like a 3rd world country free of any copyright laws or US influence. People put WAY too much stock in private trackers being entirely safe.

'Tis a sad day cry Oh well, I hadn't used it much recently anyways. I've been trying to go back to the ancient way of buying physical CDs. Glad I saw this thread -- I stopped all my torrents from OiNK.

I think 180,000 total is a pretty-accurate number. I think they just said the "donations" part because many articles are trying to say that the members of oink paid for their music from illegal places and they are trying to say it was very lucrative for the oink owner, so he should get lots of jail time. I wonder who would have gave them such information....

No, but about 180,000 people did. Thankfully for him, his site was based on more than one user's account.

Twon

I didn't even know that payments/donations were an option... Oh well. I never used it too much. I'l probably get arrested though.

dmorris68

24-10-2007 13:35:40

There is some conjecture as to whether that 180,000 number were actual donators or total membership. Many of the media reports are erroneously stating that members had to pay to join, so the assumption could be that all 180K members paid. It seems most logical that the 180K number is for total membership, only a portion of which paid money. To assume 180K donators, total membership would likely number over a million assuming a 10% donation rate (which is not uncommon, and is possibly a generous assumption -- the vast majority won't pay). That many members for an exclusive, private tracker that is known to be difficult to get into would not likely have that many members.

theysayjump

24-10-2007 14:30:00

I'm pretty sure it was 180k total, because at the bottom of their homepage they'd have the stats and just a few days ago I checked how many members they had which was in the 180's.

junkie06

24-10-2007 15:11:12

damn they will be missed

Gigante

24-10-2007 17:25:17

It is pretty common knowledge there 180k members, not paying members. 180k is huge for a private site.

Yep. A good Oink member too. )

I was just about to hit poweruser then it got shut down.

So yeah, it's good to hear that these Oink members are getting together and putting all of their downloaded Oink music in one place.

Psyc

08-11-2007 10:52:34

Yeah I can download faster, but they monitor upload speeds and if I start seeding things like crazy they send out warnings and stuff.

I really don't know how it works, but I don't really want to risk it. I just wait until I go home to do whatever I want.

I'd also been PU+ on oink for about a month or more. PU+ on Waffles.fm is a lot harder to obtain.

If you're a member of What.cd and have checked your inbox, you probably got an e-mail from the "RIAA". It was actually a 14-year-old who hacked the site with help from his brother. He then sent out e-mails to all What.cd users spoofing the email==piracy@riaa.orgpiracy@riaa.org=piracy@riaa.orgpiracy@riaa.org/email e-mail address.

What.cd confirms that this was an attack and not from the RIAA (had me scared ) ). Here's a copy of the e-mail sent to everyone
[quotee885a8aae8="piracy@riaa.org"]Dear registered user of the site What.cd,

We have recently been investigating the activities of the users of the
site http//www.what.cd/ and we have found that this site exists for the
sole purpose of music piracy.

Pirating music is a criminal offence and we believe it should be obvious
to you that the results outweigh the benefits - hard working artists
won't be rewarded for their work and will stop producing music,
ultimately leading to a severely reduced selection of music both in the
shops and for download.

The RIAA had hoped that the disabling by the police of the large illegal
music site, Oink.cd, would stop a lot of people from engaging in piracy,
as they don't want to be seen as criminals. However, this appears to
not be the case, as two large new sites have sprung up in its place.

This email is the final warning to all of you who were members of
Oink.cd and are current members of What.cd. If we find you to be
committing any more criminal acts of piracy then we will have to press
charges against you, as representatives of the major record companies of
America.

Yours Faithfully,

The RIAA[/quotee885a8aae8]

Also, What.cd put up a log of all the activities on the kids nix box that shows how they were DoS'ed, hacked into SQL, etc.
http//pastebin.ca/770838
The good stuff starts on line 491.

dmorris68

12-11-2007 12:17:31

I can tell from the working of that e-mail that it isn't official. In fact I suspect it was authored by Brit ("offence" for example). Not only that, assuming what.cd is located outside the US, the RIAA has no access to member e-mails unless a cooperating government had already raided and taken down the site.

It's funny watching people squirm though. ;) P
