I am kind of at a loss for words at how surprised I am they pulled a move this big.

As their contract with their record label is up this won't be released in stores. It is just available on the website for now, you only pay whatever you think the album is worth. The best part being every penny goes to Radiohead.

In december they will mail out discboxs consisting of LP1 and 2 on vinyl and CD(yes it's a double album) and a picture booklet, for $80. If you pre-order it now you get to download it next week.

-edit- I just preordered it for a dollar

Damn it, I was counting on this being a ratio booster for Oink. Here is to counting on there site goes down due to massive amounts of download.

That's pretty impressive, but it's Radiohead. There are probably only a few other acts who are as original and forward thinking as the 'head.

This is a huge step for the future of music and the way we are able to get it.

I am trying to think of other acts doing anything close to this magnitude and this is all that is coming to mind.

2001 - Wilco gets cut by their record label puts Yankee Hotel Foxtrot up on the web for free download, then eventually gets signed and release it 1 year later. It debuts at number 11, 50 marks higher than any other previous offering.

2007- After their albums leaked to the net, The New Pornographers, and Stars among others let you preorder the CD and stream for free until the release.

hehehhehe

No way dood, fallout boy is way better!!!!11 LOL

But seriously, it'll be cool if truly good bands no longer need these worthless record companies for distribution and still make some money. Can't wait for this album.

There's NiN with their whole alternate reality thing going on. Leaving thumb drives in bathrooms at concerts, etc. They also have several songs available in multi-track downloads.

it's difficult for me to overstate how excited i am about this.

btw, prince has been giving away his music to anyone that goes to his concerts for the last few years.

I knew someone was going to bitch.

I plan on picking up the CD when it's released next year.

I hope you don't mind that I'm not paying for it twice.

justinag06

They are releasing it on a CD next year, so all they are doing is preempting the inevitable and leaking the album themselves now.

People were going to download it for free anyways, but now maybe they get something for it instead of nothing from a lot of those people.

Given how easy it is to "steal" music these days, every music purchase, whether on iTunes or CD, is discretionary. If you want to pay for music, you do; if you don't, you don't. The difference here is that radiohead has allowed people to select what they're willing to pay.

I bet some of the people that previously "stole" the music because they were unwilling to pay $10 for it will be willing to pay $4 or $5 for it now.

I hope they start publishing what people are paying soon. Other musicians experimenting with similar models have found that people pay slightly more on average when the average price people are willing to pay is visible.

About halfway through my first listen. I bet a few of these songs will get more radio play than Radiohead usually gets.

I hope I can download the album again when I get to work. Otherwise it's gonna be a loooooong day.

The Reckoner.. such an amazing song. As well as the Videotape (Tracks 7 and 10 respectively)

KeithA

11-10-2007 17:38:37

I wonder what happened to the original Reckoner. They played it live twice and it sounded nothing at all like what's on the album. (Same name, totally new song.)

More than six out of 10 fans worldwide — 62 percent — who downloaded "In Rainbows" between Oct. 10 and Oct. 29 paid nothing for it, according to digital research firm ComScore Inc. The 38 percent who did cough up cash paid an average of $6 each. A total of 1.2 million people downloaded the album.[/quotef6b374f147]

mnx12

06-11-2007 18:24:36

That means they made a ton of money then. Most bands make hardly anything from cd sales, and they got 100%. Whatever 1.2 million x $6.00 - 62% is the average they earned. Speaking of free music, did anyone get the free Saul Williams cd Trent Reznor produced? It's soooo good.

[quote9629f85de0="doylnea"]ton of money, lol, did you even read the article?[/quote9629f85de0]

Yeah, did you read it? Like I said, bands make most their money off touring and merchandise, they don't get as much from cd sales.

EatChex89

07-11-2007 02:20:19

but radiohead should have expected that anyway, they didn't have to offer it for free, but they did.

I myself will be purchasing the discbox this holiday season.

I preordered the discbox with no regrets, but I'm admittedly a little bit frustrated with the way the band has disclosed all of its release plans.

First they announced the downloads and the discbox, but just assumed that everyone would know they planned to release an In Rainbows CD sometime in the future. Then, about 3 weeks after the release of the download, they confirmed plans to release a CD.

Then, just yesterday, they announced a forthcoming 7-album box set, a 320 kbps digital download, and a box "thumb drive," each of which contains their entire A-side back-catalog pre-In Rainbows.

Which is all cool, but it would have been helpful to know up front that they were releasing a $? download, an $80 discbox, a ~$14 CD, an $80 box set, and their full catalog in high-quality digital formats before I spent $80 on the discbox/low-quality In Rainbows download.

I'm not sure what they'll announce next week, but it feels like a 3D holographic laser show is about all that's left.

Edit Heh, update. It's EMI, the band's former label, that's releasing the bo set--without the band's blessing.

http//www.ateaseweb.com/2007/11/07/radiohead-not-involved-in-box-set-release/[]http//www.ateaseweb.com/2007/11/07/radiohead-not-involved-in-box-set-release/
