[quote2ad5e4c8c8]Well the rumors have been floating around for a few days, and now we've gotten official word -- in the form of the invite you see above -- that Apple will be holding a "special event" on September 5th. Let the speculation begin![/quote2ad5e4c8c8]

http//www.engadget.com/2007/08/28/its-on-apple-event-slated-for-september-5th/

Personally, I'm up for an upgrade from my iPod 3G that broke and was sold on eBay. It depends on how cool it is as to whether I will buy it though.. What do you think it will have? Operating system? Some say OSX...

Here's an interesting site

http//www.macrumors.com/2007/08/28/the-beat-goes-on-nano-touch-beatles-wireless/

It has a few mock-ups, I like the iPod touch one but I hate the mini squashed one.

I agree. The iPod touch looks tight, but the squished mini is lame. I think I'll stick with the Nano they have now.

[quote8088aecd20]According to "sources at Taiwan-based contract manufacturers", Digitimes expects Apple to release an iPod video with touch-control interface.

The new iPod video will also come with a wide-screen panel, high storage capacity and Wi-Fi connectivity, the sources indicated. In addition, the new iPod video is expected to be powered by NAND flash, instead of a hard disk drive (HDD).

Many had assumed the high-end iPod would continue to use a hard drive, but this report indicates Apple may move to entirely to Flash based storage.

Vnunet cites a "reliable industry insider" and claims that Apple's new iPods will be able to receive digital radio and include a "buy-now" function that will allow the user to download and buy tracks as they are being played.

Vnunet's accuracy is unknown, but there have been whispers of wireless/radio integration into the new iPods, but the exact implementation has been unknown.[/quote8088aecd20]

Yeah... I work third shift and am actually thinking about setting my alarm clock to get up as soon as it's available for sale (or preorder for that matter) in case there's too huge a demand...

I'm also excited about the wi fi feature, if it does indeed include such a feature. I've read rumors of the new iPod being able to transmit music to AirTunes via the AirPort Express (which I have and am currently using for just that) and think it'd be awesome to sit around controlling the music playing on my stereo by using the iPod. AWESOME!

It would make sense for them to do a Wifi feature though if you think about. It would counter the Zune's feature of the wireless transfer that they had between another Zune. That was like one of the major features that everyone claimed beat out the iPods so I would not be surprised if they did that. I don't expect to see a flash drive either on new touchscreen iPod, I do hope to see a 120 GB hard drive but can't imagine the price. shock

iPod Classic "6th Gen iPod". Brushed aluminum, rounded edges. 80GB = $249, 160GB = $349

iPod Nano "Mini 5th Gen iPod". "Pastel" colors, same as Shuffle. 4GB = Silver only, $149, 8GB = All colors, $199

I've been loyal to apple for a good number of years now and this update is a huge kick in the balls to any early adopters. $200 may not seem like a lot but trust me it is. Assholes. And since when did they get uncreative. Let's see, the iPhone touch is a vagina-less iPhone and the nano is the Gary Coleman of iPod videos. Go fuck yourself Apple. Maybe you shouldn't have made your store out of glass twisted .

Another vote for disappointment in the iPod Touch... 16GBs just won't cut it for me. I went ahead and ordered the 80GB "Classic iPod." I can't wait to check out the new interface.

Secondly, I figure, why pay $300 for an 8GB iPod Touch when you can get an 8GB iPhone (comes with a PHONE and CAMERA) refurbished for $50 more?! That's the route I'm going and I'm thinking about starting a freebie site soon for it. Anyone know if the ref requirements have dropped on any iPhone sites yet?

I don't see how lowering the price of a product is ever a bad thing.

If you can make it cheaper than you could before why not pass that discount off to the consumers?

If they decide to take a loss because of low demand, or to try and sell more in hopes of grabbing a larger share of the market, then you can't blame them for that.

Everything I read early on seemed to say that the cost of it's components really did drive the price point.

Sony did the same thing with the PS3 6 months after it's release, if you just had to have it the day it came out then you got what you deserved.

She started to continue but the guy next to her overheard that i was just wanted to return it and buy a cheaper one and said that there was a discount code for $200. Wow, way to stick it to guys that stood in line for hours to buy this "revolutionary phone" with their hard earned money. This was the first time I bought an Apple product for myself and most likely won't in the future. They chose to screw a lot of people even though they could have just sold the over priced item at the current price. And for people that say "that's just the nature of new electronics", give me a break. A price reduction by 1/3 over 2 months period is clearly screwing people over. I sure won't be there next time they hype up the new revolutionary, over priced iHouse, iPuppy, iTampon, etc.

And the $100 credit, that is just another slap in the face. That is just another way to sucker people to buy their crap.

Go to Hell Apple.

You are wrong, they have the most expensive smart phone out on the market today, period. By expensive I mean the cost of their components, not even the cost to produce, manufacture, etc. Just the cost of the hardware guts inside the metal case.

link to article[=http//www.eetimes.com/showArticle.jhtml;jsessionid=UF5BXB0WR4T0SQSNDLRCKHSCJUNN2JVN?articleID=200900747]link to article

[quotea9915d0841="Rick Merrit - EE Times"]Hours after the Apple iPhone hit the market June 29, analysts cracked it open to find the most expensive and densely packed smart phone to date. Teardowns revealed the iPhone uses few leading-edge components, [ba9915d0841]although it has a bill of materials estimated at roughly $220--$40 higher than its closest competitor[/ba9915d0841].

"It's a pricey piece of hardware. The $220 bill of materials is definitely at the high end of smart phones today," said David Carey, president of Portelligent (Austin, Texas), a teardown service focused on mobile phones and other consumer products.

[ba9915d0841]While the iPhone's costs are high, its profits will apparently not be as great as those of some of its competitors. Portelligent estimates typical smart phone component costs range from $130 to $180 and some handsets sell at or even above the iPhone's $500 to $600 price tags.[/ba9915d0841]

The iPhone's touch-sensitive 480 x 320 display is one of its most pricey parts, at about $60. Memory is also a big expense.

Many smart phones come with about 128 Mbytes of flash and a slot for users to add 2-Gbyte flash cards. The iPhone comes with 4 or 8 Gbytes of flash built in and no external memory slot.

About 700 Mbytes of the iPhone's flash is reserved for Apple's operating system and applications. The applications processor has an additional 128 Mbytes of SDRAM dedicated to CPU working space.
[ba9915d0841]
The $220 cost does not include Apple's undoubtedly huge software development effort to port its operating system and develop applications and other code needed for the handset.[/ba9915d0841]

Opening the simple-looking handset, Carey said he found "an extraordinary level of sophistication and complexity" in its mechanical design. He called the contrast an example of Apple's "outside-in" philosophy of creating feature-rich products that look simple but are internally complex.

In its effort to pack the features of a phone, iPod and mobile Web browser into a small and sleek case, Apple drove an unusually high degree of mechanical complexity, forcing greater assembly costs. Carey estimated the iPhone has a density of about 1.91 grams per cubic centimeter, compared with rivals at about 1.14.

"There isn't much unused space in this design," Carey said.

For example, the device uses more than 20 screws to attach three separate circuit boards to the case, compared with about four screws in many handsets. To maintain a sleek look, some seams are glued shut.

Unlike competing handsets, the iPhone offers users no access to the battery or other internals. The access doors can eat up 0.5 to 1 mm of space, Carey said.

In addition, unneeded connectors were removed. For example, the battery has wiring soldered into place.

"This wasn't designed to be easy to repair, and it's definitely more expensive to get assembled," Carey said.
The handset was widely praised as an example of sophisticated systems integration that will drive innovation in user interface software and raise the small but lucrative category of the smart phone.

The hardware of the iPhone itself is hardly remarkable a collection of not exactly leading-edge merchant semiconductors in a slim, sleek package.

The guts of the iPhone are a testament to the maturity of silicon for mobile systems. Apple did not have to design any new ASICs or wait for any high-end components to roll out of the fab to create the device. Everything it needed was right there in the form of mainstream merchant parts.

Indeed, one analyst said the device delivers great video frame rates and excellent image processing on an unremarkable applications processor from chip partner Samsung. The CPU is sandwiched by two 64-Mbyte flash dice but links to no external graphics or video accelerator.

Samsung has applications processors with embedded accelerator cores for graphics, MPEG4 video and JPEG image processing. However, the company refused to comment on the iPhone's CPU.

"Samsung has been out in left field in applications processors. Apple engineers might see it as a flash chip that just happens to have a processor inside it," said Linley Gwennap, principal of market watcher The Linley Group (Mountain View, Calif.).

Analysts expect future iPhones will be more integrated, support new cellular networks and add new media features, like mobile TV.

"There are still an awful lot of chips in this handset," said Gwennap. "In the next 12 to 18 months, they could cut the chip count in half to make handsets that are smaller or have room for new features."

Carey of Portelligent noted that one board in the phone held the cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless chips.

"One can argue you could quickly swap in different wireless boards for CDMA used on Verizon's network or UMTS used in Europe," said Carey. "I would not be surprised if we see versions of this for others networks in as little as six to nine months." Apple has not stated whether it has an exclusive license with AT&T for the iPhone and, if so, how long the exclusivity period lasts.

Mobile consultant Andrew Seybold pointed out that AT&T has agreed to resell Qualcomm's MediaFlo mobile TV broadcast service. "I suspect the next version of this phone will include the 700-MHz TV receiver chip and antenna to enable it to receive these mobile TV channels," he said.[/quotea9915d0841]

I would like my full $200 back. The ps3 and the 360 went down in price over the course of time. Apple just might lose a lot of loyal customers over this. I understand technology is this way, but this is outrageous. A product such as a phone doesn't go down by 25% in just over 2 months.

Its 33%. That is unheard of. Apple isn't this friendly loving place people make them out to be. Their profit margins are massive (much larger than MS) and all that means is they want to make a lot more money off their customers than they really have to. I agree. You people who wanted to go out and buy the iPhone during its launch should have known that of course you're not going to get it for the best price. Of course it's going to be cheaper as time goes on (although $200 is quite a significant drop lol). Apple just decided to be nice and lower the price for everyone. Now they're being even NICER for offering $100. They don't have to do that at all. I always see getting things on launch like that as very impulsive buying. I guess you can do that if you want but I think it's a waste of money in my opinion. So quit ur bitchin.

how much did sony offer everyone after they dropped the price of the PS3 $100 5 months after it launched again?

But it isn't punishing anyone wolfeman, they thought the phone was worth $600 then, and now they get $100 back in their pocket, would you rather it still be $600 so you can be the only kid on the block with it?

You chose to buy it at the price that it cost when you got it, and if you had a problem with that price you should have waited until it was cheaper.

See I would expect someone WITHOUT one, to say that. It's not the fact that they lowered the price. Its that tey lowered the price by 30% within 2 months. To top it off, its not like they lowered the price to just anyone, but the people that help them survive. When they fuck people over what do you expect is going to happen?

All I know is that now that the price isn't as ridiculous as it used to be, I will be picking up the 4gb this weekend for $300. Strange that this happened less than a week after the new nokias (without contract) were released with a similar pricetag.

It is this simple

Product Value + "Cool Factor" Value = Price they sell
$399 + $200 = $599

People paid the $200 extra for the $400 phone because they got the "cool factor", but then apple ripped that away from their customers to they paid $200 for nothing.

The cool factor is why you buy any luxury item. That's the main reason why people upgrade iPods in the first place. (People with more than 20Gigs of music who need to expand their portable music player to keep up with the size of their collection are definitely in the minority)

That's why we have these freebie sites so we don't have to drop $300 on an ipod. Just 5 referrals. -)

I got a 4GB iPhone when they reduced the price to $299 and have had it for a while. It includes the same browser and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! I'm sure most of us have used other "mobile" browsers and they're absolutely horrible. Safari is just as enjoyable a browser as I could want on such a device. I've actually chosen to use my iPhone over my MacBook Pro because I didn't feel like lugging the notebook around. Trust me... the iPhone/iPod Touch Safari browser is AMAZING!

I wouldn't worry too much about the screen as it's made of glass and is extremely difficult to scratch. I have nothing protecting my screen and am constantly sliding it in and out of my pocket/notebook bag pocket and it doesn't have a single scratch on it (I have even dropped it a couple of times ( ... nothing serious). But if you must have some sort of protection, I would recommend one of these. If you're anything like me, you don't want to obstruct the appearance of your iPod Touch by surrounding it in a huge case... you wanna show it off in all of it's glory! That's where the "bestskinsever" skin comes into play (it's made of the same material as the "invisbleShield" but at a fraction of the cost). It's an invisible skin you apply to the entire surface of your device (I didn't use the front skin, but rather every other piece as the back and sides ARE prone to scratching). It can be removed without leaving a residue and best of all, it doesn't alter the appearance of your iPod Touch like a case would. It is COMPLETELY scratch resistant! I love these and have one on all my Mac gear (MacBook Pro and previous MacBooks/MacBook Pros I have owned in the past, iPods and iPhone). I highly recommend them. Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any questions about them... if you wanted, I could send you pics of my iPhone with the skin on it. )

As for the WiFi... there are no fees. You find a hot spot, you connect to it (assuming you know the password or it is unprotected). I think I remember reading what you're referring to and I believe the "fees" it mentioned were for the Internet Service Provider (I.E. cable or DSL)you would need for using YOUR OWN WiFi.

You're gonna love it!

MyungChunHa

10-10-2007 19:19:13

Cool, I didn't think I would have any problems, but I like reviews nonetheless.

I'm thinking about getting that skin because it's really affordable. I already ordered this....

http//catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=388479

It's not too big, but it won't be shipped until the 15th. I got the bone and gold one, so I might have to cancel that to get that iskin, it would save me $25 shrug

Let me also ask you, have you had the skin the whole time, in your pocket, dropping it, etc. protecting it? Or is it just that durable by itself?

JOSHBOX

10-10-2007 20:51:21

there is absoultely no point in getting a screen protector. The glass screens will crack before they scratch. The chrome back however is just as prone to scratching as ever.

One thing I wondered though is how responsive is the touch screen?
I'm a little upset with my 8525 that sometimes it doesn't register every touch on the screen, and sometimes lags a little bit.
How are the iPhones and Touches with that?

I've never had a problem at all with the touch screen on my iPhone. It is however only sensitive to finger touches, so you can't use a stylus or your fingernail or anything. But, you won't even need to, as it's very ergonomic and extremely user friendly!

I figure if they come out with like a 32 or 60gb touch I'll sell the classic and upgrade then. Knowing apple six months from now they'll have a 32gb touch for $399 which might be worth buying for me.
