I got a new 1995 Saturn SL2. 150,600 miles on it, but I'm only using it to go to school and back which is about a 5 mile or so trip.

I spent $1800 and just got my insurance! I'm stoked. Going to pick it up soon.

be sure to have the head checked for cracks and leaks - that era Saturn is known to leak coolant like crazy

I wouldn't pay that either unless I knew very well who it came from. And being salvaged just completely ruins the deal, so it's good you got out of it.

That said, if it weren't salvaged and in excellent condition, it doesn't appear to be a bad deal at all. KBB lists the dealer retail value of a '95 SL2 w/ 150K miles in excellent condition at around $2800 (5-speed) to $3100 (auto) with just the default options selected. Private party value is about $800 less. They also report a 4.5/5 star rating for that model from 16 user reviews.

Now that you're not buying, I would stay as far as away from a that era Saturn as possible. My sister, and a friend (who is a mechanic) have both owned that era Saturns, and had lots of trouble.

Buy a Honda - you can buy a mid 90's Civic CX for close to the same price, and miles, but you'll get way more reliability out of that Honda, than any Saturn, IMO.

Ya know, I feel the same way. Buy Japanese, preferably Toyota or Honda. You just can't get a more reliable vehicle, IMO. Saturn to me has always been pretty much what it is a cheap-made GM.

Yet Saturn has a pretty rabid fanbase. I know folks who are on their third or fourth, and just love them. And I again point to that 4.5/5 star rating on KBB. Strange, considering the reliability issues I've also heard out of them.

I probably won't ever buy domestic again -- As of 6 years ago I'm a die-hard Toyota/Lexus fanboy -- but if I did it would have to be GM, unless things change drastically between now and then. But I think I can safely say it would never be a Saturn GM.

Agreed - I grew up driving Toyota's and had nothing but great luck. I bought a used Honda Accord in the late 90's, rather than a Toyota, because I wanted a mid-size coupe, and the Solara hadn't yet been sold (or was brand new, I don't remember), and the 2-door Camry was out of my price range. I'd recommend either manufacturer, just have more experience with Honda than Toyota these days.

I actually would rather get a foreign car. However, I need to get a car ASAP and I'm just sick of looking for shit and then going and looking at the car and finding it has shit loads of problems.

This is harder than I thought it would be.

All the really sweet deals are picked up before I even have a chance.

^^ 2 problems Insurance, higher risk of being strewn across the highway

I feel your pain chexy. I'm sick of looking for cars too. The problem I'm having though is that the loan for my totaled car still shows as open on my credit report since the GAP insurance takes its sweet-ass time to go through. I think I may have a car, but I need more down payment.

1800 for a regular old car with 150k miles?

They sell cars with that much mileage for like a few hundred bucks or so.
Shoot old good shape integras can be found for cheaper than that.

My bimmer 07 has only 3200 miles on it lol and I got it in November. I don't drive the car much at all haha

insurance on a bike isn't too bad, here in NY I qouted a guy who was 19 for full coverage for $300 every 6mo. He had a Ducoti something.

^^ Probably not a good choice for being cheap. I did a quick search and even one with 100k+ miles is around $7-8k ?

As an update, I'm looking into a Civic LX with 85k (5spd) for $8700. Not bad. Just working on the financing now.

Wranglers arin't cheap but they are worth it. I got mine ('93) for $5,500. I highly recommend them if you can afford it.

so now I'm stuck with a 93 geo prizm 170k miles.

but I'm not too disappointed since the geo prizm is the same thing as a toyota corolla.
