Is it worth the $500-$600 for a phone? I played with one in an Apple store near my house, and they ARE definitely very cool. Safari Internet, Video/Music Player, Exterior Speakers, E-Mail, Maps, etc... but is it worth all that money?

I really want one... but the only thing is, I'm either at work, or at home about 90% of my time, and I have access to internet and phone and everything else at both locations. U think it'd be a waste of money for me to buy an iphone since I don't travel a lot?

Im afraid at how many pages my bill is going to be. I use it everyday for hours and hours. (Now wherever I am outside the house, shopping, gym, everything, movies, Im connected to the world with a few easy taps)

Honestly it took me about a week to discover all the things to with the iphone, still learning more stuff, more iphone sites launching. I don't travel a whole lot, but hey it makes it SOOOOO easy for me to do business away from home.

Internet and Entertainment functions are 1st class! on the iphone. Definitely worth the money!

texting works very similar to gmail on the iphone (split up into conversations, etc., probably even nicer than gmail). One of my favorite features. The ease of use and the blending of touch screen is just amazing. Phone of the 23rd century as a lot of people comment to me.

Take a look at everythingiphone.com and their forums. For those who don't have the phone yet, LOTS TO read about whats available for the iphone, whats in the works.

Play with it at the apple store, you'll get a small taste of it.

Didn't think it was going to be as good as it is from owning one for a little while now. Didn't think it would be as useful or worth the money. Boy was I wrong. Even if you aren't much of a traveller or a businessman, its features are so worth the money. Makes me feel even more scammed of buying a razr for 299 lol back in the day.

Not likely. I'll take a full featured PDA that is totally open to application development over an iPhone any day. And the 8925 is shaping up to be a serious contender -- especially if AT&T doesn't cripple it by disabling the GPS module. I'll almost certainly be upgrading my 8125 to the 8925 when it comes out.

I'm gonna have to agree with dmorris and others. I actually was a big advocate of the iphone when it was getting all the hype before it was released. I've come very close to purchasing one, but then realized it has very little features that I require a top-of-the-line pda to have.

-You cannot create any Word or Excel documents.
-You cannot open e-mails with Word attachments and edit them to send back to the person.
-No 3rd party software compatibility at all (I'm in the medical field and require many Skyscape programs)
-etc etc etc.

It seems that the iPhone is for strictly entertainment purposes rather than for business professionals looking for a top-of-the-line pda/cell phone that allows you to do anything and everything on the go.

Am I correct?

That about sums it up, yeah.

It's a powerful enough platform, it's just crippled by Apple's decision to close it up to 3rd parties. With that one change alone, all of your other criticism's could be addressed, eventually. Especially since the rumored v2 is supposed to include 3G support (for those who consider that important).

They should at LEAST release a JVM for it. I'd be happy with that for my own development, but I also want to be able to run a lot of the same apps I run on my current PDA, so ultimately it still needs a full SDK.

I would avoid the 8525 at this point. The 8925, based upon the HTC Kaiser, is rumored to be released shortly (August is what I read, but that was unconfirmed). Upon release, the 8525 will be discontinued, much like the 8125 was discontinued when the 8525 was released. From what I read the 8925 will have the same pricepoint as the 8525 $500 without contract, $300 with 2-year contract.

The 8925 is a Windows Mobile 6 device, versus WM5 for the 8125/8525. It also has a hinged/sliding keyboard and (assuming AT&T doesn't cripple it) built-in GPS and a front-facing camera. Some rumors have stated the front-facing camera will be disabled by AT&T, the GPS status is uncertain. I'm hoping they keep at least the GPS, as I run my 8125 with an external Bluetooth GPS receiver, and I'd love to be able to ditch that.

Junk is too strong a word, but it is far from ideal for serious PDA users. It's only really popular with those who've never had a recent vintage, high-end smartphone. It's novel for that audience, but for those of us who use them to get real work (and play) done... not so much.

Oh yeah? Okay. What will be the main differences in Windows Mobile 5 and Windows Mobile 6?

Also, quick questions... with the Cingular 8125/8525/8925 can you own it, but not purchase a data plan from Cingular/AT&T and just use the built in Wi-Fi to access the internet and e-mail? I will be in a hospital pretty much every waking hour and it's a free hot-spot.

[quote2a4546f06a="jeagle82"]Oh yeah? Okay. What will be the main differences in Windows Mobile 5 and Windows Mobile 6?[/quote2a4546f06a]
It's a major architectural change. Better memory management, better multitasking/task swapping, and better performance. At least according to the hype -- I've yet to actually have a WM6 device in-hand. I've been trying to get some of our industrial Intermec and Symbol CE5/WM5 devices at work updated to CE6/WM6, with no luck yet. They're promising availability, but they're not delivering.

http//www.pocketpcmag.com/_archives/Jun07/wmsix.aspx

[b2a4546f06a]EDIT[/b2a4546f06a] Actually, I spoke too soon on the architectural changes. Those are in CE6. Historically, the Windows Mobile kernel has always been based on the WinCE kernel, and I had assumed WM6 continued that trend. However, according to this WinCE DevTeam blog post[=http//blogs.msdn.com/ce_base/archive/2007/02/14/windows-mobile-6-and-the-ce-os.aspx]this WinCE DevTeam blog post, WM6 is based upon a minor update to the CE5 kernel. Some CE6 features were ported over, and the high-level apps were all improved (as discussed in that PocketPCMag article). I'm a bit disappointed because I was interested in the new architectural improvements coming in CE6. Oh well... by all reports I've seen it's still a major upgrade and comes highly recommended.

Absolutely. I don't have a data plan with mine, and I use it on the net all the time. If I'm ever caught outside of a hotspot and absolutely need to get online, I use the pay-as-you-go MediaNet service, which is pretty cheap if you don't download a bunch o' crap.

The iphone is the only phone thats been able to give me the mobile experience I want. It's revolutionary and I have a feeling through software updates Apple will really get things moving on the communications front from all sides (home and mobile). I think they might even be the only ones who can put video phones into everyones home and on the move.

You know whats funny.....

Starship Earth; a ride at Epcot center in Disney World, It shows the past to future. Epcot is the park that has a lot to do with the future. Great ride! Inspirational.

Whats funny is guess which company you see on all the future communications?

AT&T (sponsor of the ride till just a couple years ago)

"The 18-story geodesic sphere houses a 13-minute dark ride using the Omnimover system that explores the progression of human communications from cavemen to the dawn of the internet and beyond."

Guess AT&T was really serious about progressing human communication? They got apple exclusivity!

You can't be the phone for feel and entertainment experience. With constant updates there will be 3rd party apps, and this phone will kick ass even more. I can see why you guys like other phones, but I know a lot of business people who are getting them. ) So don't call my precious trash. ) Now what is trash is all these taxes and fees on the cellphone bill that add like $15 a month. Not until after Apple's first choice (T-Mobile) turned them down. ;) I'll be T-Mobile is kicking themselves now, though.

Not to bash AT&T/Cingular -- I've had cellular service with them for about 12 years now through the whole BellSouth Mobility -> Cingular -> AT&T acquisition chain. I've been quite happy with them overall.

Where have you heard there will be 3rd party apps? Last I heard Apple was not commenting on even the possibility, although with the outcry for it they would be stupid to ignore it.

Saying business people are getting it doesn't say much. I know lots of business people, like sales people or executives, who want or need nothing other than e-mail or casual browsing from their PDA's. iPhone is fine for that, as is any run-of-the-mill smartphone/PDA nowadays. I'm talking about techie folks like me, who not only write code for the things, but use them for stuff like remote desktop into my Windows and Linux machines, SSH for shell access, TomTom & iGuidance for GPS navigation, keep up with my bank account via Pocket Quicken, access MS Office documents, Voice Command, etc. etc. You can't even get close to doing any of that with an iPhone.

The iPhones only major achievement is its unique user interface, which Apple historically excels at. However once you get past the UI and try to actually get work done, it's pretty doggone stale and boring compared to a 2 year old WM5 device. Eye-candy doesn't get work done. ;)

Oh, and lest I forget entertainment I have several games on mine that you cannot get for an iPhone either.

So, I'm not bashing iPhone -- it's great if that's all you need and don't mind paying the price for a nifty UI but a fairly bare feature set. Apple is genius at marketing. I hope they sell a billion of 'em. They just won't sell ME one, nor my colleagues who have the same interests as I, unless they get off their butts and actually open the thing up for folks to do with as they please.

I've already played with it...My brother owns a cell phone store.[/quoteb625f8926a]

Unless he owns a franchised AT&T store, I am almost positive that AT&T stores and Apple stores are the only officially licensed companies to cell them.[/quoteb625f8926a]
He can still get them...

Btw Dmorris, they have a leaked version of WM6 that you can find easily with a quick google search.

I personally didn't install it because I might be doing a warranty exchange with my 8525so I don't wanna bother wasting my time

And Dmorris, I have two questions for you
One, do you have any recommendations for a GPS adapter for my PDA? I wanna get one for my car.
And two, do you know of any backup software for the 8525 I can get for free possibly? Or one I could just download from torrents? I need something I can use to back up all my info like dates and contacts and files from my PDA so I can reload it onto a new one if I do a warranty exchange.

I'm aware of the hacked version of WM6 and also the risks involved. I'm not really interested in unofficial and/or illegal releases. At one time it was reported that HTC was going to release official WM6 upgrades for the 8125 (Wizard) and later models but I believe that has since changed, and now you have to buy a device with WM6 installed.

Any standards compliant Bluetooth GPS receiver should work fine. I bought this one[=http//www.buygpsnow.com/i-blue-edition-2-i-blue-737-iblue-i-blue-ps-737-32-channel-bluetooth-gps-gps-receiver-waas-auto-on-off-679.aspx]this one as it came highly recommended. I've since recommended it to others who love it too. Of course you'll need navigation software to use it.

As for backup, I bought SunnySoft Backup Manager.[=http//www.sunnysoft.com/software.php?idarticle=245]SunnySoft Backup Manager. It's just one of several available. There was another I preferred at the time, but they didn't have a working WM5 version when I bought this one. Now they do, but for the life of me I can't remember the name of it off the top of my head. This one has worked very well though.

Still a whole lot better!!!

Honestly I think 4GB is plenty for a cell phone. Hey I might have to sync more often than a 8gb person, but not like im leaving computer access for a month lol.

4 GB is fine if your using it just for a cell phone, but mine is my primary ipod now so I really would have liked to have more like a 20-60GB... idk why they didn't make them, prrly so they can release those in a few weeks and sell more of them shrug

I fill it up, then fill it up with my other stuff when I feel like listening to it. Mine is my iPod too. If I go work out, im not going to listen to 8gb of music let alone 4gb.
