I want to know what most people "core" list of programs is, such as stuff that you would immediately install after formatting. Here is my list

Vent
Trillian
AVG Free
Alcohol 120%
Winrar
Firefox (Plus Adblock, All-in-one gesture, bugmenot, etc.)
Windows Media + Update
uTorrent (V1.6)

firefox
itunes/quicktime
AIM
winrar
azureus
windows media + update
divx
adobe reader

I'll get AVG free or ad-aware or something soon.

WinRAR
Sandra
Azureus
Skype
BitPim
NHC (Laptops)
iTunes
EAC
Daemon/Alcohol 120%

You use a lot of spyware/ad-aware/firewall tools. I never found any of them useful, but I keep AVG + Windows firewall just incase.

I don't trust MS to make a decent firewall. Kerio came recommended, so I use it, but prior to that I still used something other than Windows' one. Same with Windows Defender.

I think you'll also find that when you have more than one antivirus/spyware app, certain things one didn't catch, the other [ib5918005b8]will[/ib5918005b8]. I also use RootKit Revealer, Webroot Spy Sweeper and Hijack This on occasion.

I use Mozilla Firefox........

and I never update my Windows XP.........

and I never go to any pron site or anything else never download anything... and that should keep my computer clean.

Then you probably haven't experienced a variety of malware. I used to run at least 2-3 at one time, but now just run a-squared as it seem to provide the most coverage out of a single app. SpyBot S&D would be my second choice.

And Windows firewall does absolutely nothing to protect you from outgoing traffic, so if you ever do get a trojan, bot, keylogger, or anything like that, you won't have any means to stop it from reaching out. A real software firewall like Kerio will block unauthorized outgoing traffic.

Off the top of my head

AVG
a-squared
Kerio Firewall
TweakUI + a few other MS PowerToys
Firefox
Thunderbird
GTalk
PuTTY
FlashFXP
PowerArchiver
Lots of the SysInternals tools
Foxit Reader
xplorer2
OpenOffice
Nero 7
Alcohol 120%
RipIt4Me
Acoustica CD Label Maker
Wireshark
CCleaner
Quicken Deluxe
SnagIt
iTunes
WinAMP 5
VLC
Eclipse
Borland C++Builder 6
Multi-Edit
XAMPP
Notepad++
BareTail
BareGrep
Hex Workshop
Beyond Compare
AceHTML Pro
ColorPic
Komodo IDE
GIMP
Microsoft Digital Image Studio
NX Client[/size63aa0362bb]

That's all the critical stuff that gets installed right away. That's not counting any games, of which there are many. And there's other stuff that creeps in as I need it but don't use on a regular basis.

David just wanted to post a longer list. ;)

David, XstreamXM seems to be more stable than XamP (at least for me). Have you tried both?

Ditch Trillian right now. I used it for like a year, and it's so bad. Use Pidgin instead. I Can't even compare it. 100x Better then trillian, and does the same thing.

Also..

Daemon Tools
VLC
AdAware

Add those to your list.

What makes it that much better? I use Trillian, and have for years - I'm open to something new if it's that much better though.

I loved Trillian in its early days, many years ago, mostly for ICQ. I even paid for it. But I fell outta love with it and wound up using either GTalk or Gaim/Pidgin. I don't know if your version of Trillian does it, but Pidgin supports multiple protocols to include Jabber/GTalk. When I'm on Linux, I do my GTalking through Pidgin, but still use the Google client on Windows. I'm not big on IM so only use that when I need to.

Just because you don't visit pron sites doesn't mean you're invulnerable to some sort of malicious code or attack.
