Anyone watch it? I thought it was awesome that dateline did that. I've had mine stolen at one point and wanted to kill someone, but I didn't feel so bad knowing I got it from a free site. Do you think Apple will implement some kind of system to be able to find them?

I was waiting to see someone with a freeipod shirt jump out in the background screeming Dmorris's name.......

Yea, they are dumb if they don't cash in on this, but then this is a good way to see where you get your Mp3's from and track them.

guy from dateline had a show about ipods,he had ipods laying around for people to steal them. And then they tracked them and put them on camera like the predator show. Honestly I think what one of the guys said was kinda true thats its like putting money on the floor and telling people they cant take it.

Depends on where they took it from. If it was a restaurant, the thief had no excuse. But from a park bench, you're asking for it to be taken.

Oh totally, that makes it okay to steal if you were "just asking for it"

I watched it. All those people that stole it are morons.

However...Dateline NBC planted those iPods, intentionally leaving them behind, seeing who would take them. That's just wrong. Just like they "lead on" predators. Yeah, they should all be arrested and fined and taken to jail or whatever, but when you lead someone on like that...

How is it wrong? It's no different than how they catch people on To Catch a Predator. It's no different than a police sting operation.

For all the thiefs knew, those iPods were just mistakenly left behind, when someone had to get up and go somewhere in a hurry.

I would have taken the iPod with the intentions of finding the owner via serial number.

I wonder if anyone with similar intentions was entrapped like that?

I don't think so, because the only people that they were able to find had connected it to their PC and registered the iPod. Some of them were people who legitimately had been given the iPod as a gift -- one lady's husband bought her the iPod from a flea market.

She took it to one Apple store, and they refused to look the owner up by serial number -- citing an infringement on their privacy as a reason. She took it to another store, and the manager was willing to look the owner (Dateline) up and contact them.

They reported that Apple is going to be working on a way to track down the stolen iPods -- it will be interesting to see how that is done. I imagine the iPod would have to "phone home" to Apple whenever it is registered on a computer, so will people be up in arms over their "privacy" being violated there? It's interesting, either way..

I thought it was pretty cool, but I agree with the guy saying it was sitting there so I see why he took it. When it comes to something that costs $300 I would definately try to find out who it belonged to because you know the person who left it behind is probably freaking out because they lost it. It's like the feeling you get when you lose your wallet.

But wasn't it in a bag? It's not like the iPod was just there.

Exactly. Most of these ipods were stolen from inside a car or bag. You went inside the bag or car in order to steal the ipod. It wasnt just laying there.

Because stealing something that's in a plastic bag is somehow any different?
