[quotefce1863708="http//www.topix.net"]TOKYO (Reuters) - Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s Wii game console outsold Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 by a ratio of over 6 to 1 in June in Japan, a game magazine publisher said, solidifying Nintendo's leading position.

Nintendo sold 270,974 units of the Wii in the four weeks ended June 24, compared with 41,628 units for the PS3 and 17,616 units for Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360, according to data from Enterbrain.

The Wii's lead against the PS3 was 4 to 1 in April and 5 to 1 in May.

The Wii's strong performance, coupled with continued brisk demand for Nintendo's portable game gear, the DS, helped the Kyoto-based company shoot past Sony in market capitalization last week and become one of Japan's 10 most valuable companies.

Shares in Nintendo were up 0.2 percent at 45,200 yen by late morning on Monday, while Sony, a company with sales eight times as big as Nintendo's, fell 0.3 percent to 6,310 yen.

The Nikkei average was down 0.19 percent.

The Wii has won more customers than its two rivals since its Japanese launch late last year by offering innovative ways of playing console games.

The device features a motion-sensitive controller that allows users to direct on-screen play by swinging it like a baseball bat or wielding it like a sword, opening a new avenue of game playing.

Sony, which has dominated the $30 billion global game industry over the past decade with its PlayStation and PlayStation 2, saw a slow start for the PS3 due mainly to its high prices and lack of attractive software titles.[/quotefce1863708]

More disappointing news for PS3 and 360 fans.

Luckily, Sony should have a strong E3 lined up - news of Killzone 2, playable Lair, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, and a rumored new model of the PS3 that will be in the 360's price range, but not backwards compatible with PS2/PSX games. Also, more details on HOME and PSP2 are expected to be released as well.

360 fans are probably already used to to the horrific Japanese sales, but will enjoy the consoles dominance in the US. Also, Halo 3 should give them something to look forward to.

Since most of the people already have 360s that want one/can afford one.

That statistic is going to look shocking because the 360 was released a year earlier.

Thats not true at all. The majority of people don't buy consoles within the first 2 years of release. And, the PS2 still sells units, in fact, more then both the 360 and PS3. By your logic, everyone that wanted a PS2 would have had one in 2002, and it wouldn't be selling at all now.

Ps2 is still at the top of my list for what console I want, followed by the Wii. Those are the only two I want. The last console I bought was an N64...

So why don't you buy a PS2? They are like $100-150 on eBay.

It's not disappointing to me as an Xbox 360 owner/fan. The number of systems sold doesn't make me enjoy the games any less or more shrug

Ya, but the number of systems sold DOES effect the number of games produced. No one wants to develop games for a system that isn't selling =S

There's still more than enough 360 systems on the market to make it worth developing games for.

My statement was a general statement, not particularly aimed at the 360. But it is true that if systems don't sell, developers stop making games for it, at least exclusively.

Just look at the PS3, its lost a handful of exclusive franchises, like DMC, Ace Combat, Virtua Fighter, Assassins Creed, etc.

And the fact of the matter is, at the rate the Wii is selling, its going to outsell the 360 within 2 months in the US. Developers aren't going to continue to develop games for the 360 or PS3 when the Wii is selling so well. Its unfortunate, because the Wii is a piece of junk compared to the 360/PS3(coming from a Wii owner).

what i dont get is why would devs develop for a system with less powerful hardware just looks backwards to me.

Because devs are in the gaming industry to make a profit, primarily. And if the Wii is selling the best, thats where the most profit lies. I mean, even ass crappy ports of last gen games(like Mortal Kombat Armageddon and Prince of Persia) are selling like hot cakes on the Wii.

Fortunately, there are a few rare dev teams that like to make good games AND money, like Hideo Kojima, Seeds, Team ICO/Fumito Ueda, Suda 51...

keep in mind this is the wii's first year. I thought nintendo's in house offerings were great so far. Metroid is going to set the bar for what the Wii is capable of for the next year or two.

You have to give the developers some time to get used to the system.

Thats my problem... only Nintendos 1st party games(Zelda, Wii Sports, Super Paper Mario) have been any good, just about all 3rd party games have sucked or been ports. The only notable 3rd party Wii games are Sonic and the Secret Rings(it was alright) and Resident Evil 4(but I've already played the game on 2 other systems before, and don't need it a 3rd time). I mean hell, even Mario Party 8 and Wario Ware were just meh.

I'd like to see some devs actually spend some time and make some good games for the Wii.

Wii does have a lot of games but the only good games from what I can see are the first party games. The only exclusive for 360 that I like is Gears of War (I get bored with Halo after about 15min). Even though I have not bought a game for PS3 since December, I'm happy with it.. We have a lot of games coming out this year.

I heard its more or less the same as the 360 version. If you haven't played either, I'd give it a go.

If you're a PS3 owner, you should give Ninja Gaiden Sigma a try. You should also be eagerly anticipating the release of Warhawk and Lair next month, and then Heavenly Sword and Killzone 2 in Septemer... PS3 actually has a few good games coming out in the next month or two!

Of course, Wii has Metroid in Sept. and 360 has Halo 3 also in Sept., but thats about it for those two(not to downplay the importance of either title).

Bear in mind that the Wii is cheap. If money is an issue, you'd likely choose the Wii.

Excel

04-07-2007 20:00:36

If money is an issue, I'd advise against getting any next gen consoles, because, to be honest, they are all severely lacking in terms of good game selection. Gears of War is the only stand out AAA next gen came so far.
