So some days ago, I bought a new cam. I bought the Canon Digital XTi Rebel. I like photography and all but im a newb at all of this. Is there a way some of you good people can help me? I reallly love some of your guys work (I havent seen Dmorris, but I know he knows about cams) So wat I want help in is the settings and all of that. Is there any sites/ tutorials you guys read to learn? I wanna know how to use the different kinds of settings you use in a situation, when you put a high or low iso, when u change the shutter speed, and all the other stuff. I would appreciate the help, thanks D

I would definitely suggest reading up on aperature, depth of focus, all that kind of stuff. I don't have any sites off the top of my head, but I know there's a lot of good sites if you google for tutorials.

My major piece of advice would be to just spend time looking at photographs that you like, and try to figure out how to emulate it. It's a great way to learn, and before you know it, you'll be applying those strategies to your own original stuff.

Yeah I was reading on some other forum that thats like the essential to taking pics, but I dont know how to mess with it. Also how much of a picture is just taking it, and how much is photoshop?

I agree completely with CG.

Once you get the hang of exposures, Fstops, ISO speed, etc. then you'll be able to take perfectly exposed photos. The rest of it depends on you and your "eye." The composition of your photos, the style, angles, etc. All it takes is practice and research. That's how I learned, not from any "formal" classes at school.

Or you can just photograph sexy biotches like me.

P.S. I miss you, come over. oops

So how did u learn how to work exposures, Fstops, ISO speed, etc.?? Pass some biotches this way lol . Veek I havent seen u post in a while, where u been?

I to have and love the XTi and can honestly say that the manual is a dream. Read it and trust me you'll understand it more

I would suggest looking at http//photography-on-the.net/forum/index.php which is a Canon based forum. The folks on there have been very helpful!

Also, http//www.fredmiranda.com/forum/ is an excellent website for photography

Dimitri has set up a fairly good tutorial at http//dvattika.com/site/

and of course there is a book titled Understanding Exposure that is suppose to be really good

p.s. I have the XT

Some pictures taken by me with the XTi, it really is an amazing camera!

I'll post more of my Europe pictures in another thread, just showing you how easy it is with the XTi to create great pictures! Photobucket lowered the quality but you get what I mean.

Definitely read the manual. That's what I used.

When I got my Rebel 300 (I think two steps down from the XTi) I went to that from a 2MP Kodak peice of shite, and the learning curve was huge.

Just play with it and figure out what does what.

The higher the ISO the brighter your pictures will be, but they'll also come with more noise/grain.
The higher your aperture number, the sharper your picture will be, but the sweetspot is in between 12 and 14 I believe.
The higher your ISO, the better it captures moving objects, same goes for your shutter speed.
Use the rule of thirds; Place your main subject in one third of the frame (think of your picture as a tic tac toe box and try to fit your subject in one of those boxes), but also think outside the box and change it up a bit.

Take your camera everywhere you can and take pictures of everything, you're not wasting anything and you get practice. I used to literally take mine everywhere, trips to the shop, work, go for walks and take pictures of anything.

Also, try some sites like dpchallenge.com where they post challenges and you have a certain amount of time to meet it. You'll get some great feedback on what you're doing wrong and what you're doing right.

But seriously, use the manual, take it everywhere, and take pictures of whatever you want (as long as it's legal).

I downloaded a great Digital Rebel XT guide from somewhere hoping I would get the camera one day, but I think it got lost in a format. If you have OiNK, there are a couple PDFs on there.

I'm going to go with a Nikon D200 or D80 as my next camera probably. I really like the tones and colours on Nikons and I love some of the pictures I've seen from them.

The XTi is much better than mine, but you can still take some half decent pictures with mine

Nikon has been kickin out some pretty bitchin cameras. Those are both good choices. I would have gone D80 but honestly the price was a factor and the quality to price ratio was gearing towards the XTi. but my friend john has the d80 and its tits.

There is an abundance of fake and scamtastic sites claiming to sell digital cameras for extremely cheap.

They'll either

Take your money and not send you the item
Take your money and delay sending it until you escalate your complaint
Take your money, throw in a bunch of shit you didn't ask for and then charge you more

If you're EVER even thinking of buying a digital camera online always check http//www.resellerratings.com/ before buying. Search for the store you're looking at and read the customer reviews as well as the stores' rating. When it comes to NEW (as in condition) digital cameras, if it's too good to be true then it will be.

No idea what camera I was using, all I know is that I scanned these from negatives with my brand new Epson Perfection V200
