Anyone have any luck fixing this without sending it off to Microsoft? I've already added an Nyko fan...

There is a fix it guide on the internet for $20...says 90% chance of fixing the 360. The guy offers a 60 money-back guarantee...What do ya think?

My 360 got the red rings for the first time a few days ago, as well. I sent it in yesterday but during the wait period, I was able to play it thanks to the towel trick. http//youtube.com/watch?v=2w4OnKCX6Nc

It seems ridiculous but there is a reason why it works. Wrapping the 360 in towels blocks off all the ventilation, causing extreme heat inside of it. The problem with the 360 when it gets the red lights is apparently that a piece of medal detaches from the motherboard due to shoddy soldering. The towel causes heat inside of the 360, which causes that piece of metal to expand and retouch the mobo.

I thought this was BS at first, but I tried it (took 3 tries) and it worked. It lasted me the entire wait period for my coffin to arrive. If you have any questions, just ask. I highly recommend you try it.

Got my xbox 360 from every10minutes before it was even officially released, and it still works perfectly.

I just called them about my remaining two broken ones and they will be repaired, but there was no discussion of price...

Okay, I had to call back to get ref # for my second one. Just talked to the guy and he said my boxes will arrive in 5-8 days. Does this mean that they aren't charging me? I have my ref numbers and everything and he never mentioned paying and did not take any billing info from me.

For anyone else that got them fixed, did they take billing info upfront over the phone?

When my old xbox (1st gen) broke down they told you upfront the cost. Then they asked for billing information. Looks like you are good and won't have to pay.

yeah
this just happened last week. still waiting for my box from microsoft.
hopefully it will come before i got out of town friday
cost when out of warranty is $139 including shipping

if someone finds out that most of the boxes are failing b/c of shoddy soldering that could end up being a problem for microsoft in the future

you fix it by removing or replacing the x-clamp. there are detailed instructions on xbox-scene.

Awesome. MFR date was 11/2005 on one and 6/2006 on the other. I am pretty sure the first should have been out of warranty since it was first batch, and the second I dunno when it was bought, so I told them october 2006 so it would be under a year.

The towel thing seems prettty risky. The risk of over heating is very high.
