Watched it in a cinema appreciation class and I hated it. . . Too long and drawn out. It was my second least favorite movie of the class, but much much better than Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf! That was the worst, Elizabeth Taylor's charactor made me just want to shoot myself in the head.

It definitely suffered from a lack of explosions and naked boobs. Also, when I saw it, it was all screwed up and in black and white, as if the whole thing wasn't even filmed in color or something crazy like that.

i watched this movie 3 years ago for school.... and had this same debate.

it sucks.

it was just innovative for the time and that list needs to be re-evaluated.

Maybe I'm just a bit older or something. I like the movie. The cinematography is great. You spend the whole movie trying to find out what this big media tycoon wants when he just wants to be a kid again.

EDIT After thinking this through I have a better analogy. This movie is a piece of art. Think of it as the Mona Lisa of film. You may not like the Mona Lisa, you might prefer a prettier girl showing more off, but that doesn't make it any less of a masterful painting. Citizen Kane is the same. The angles, the story, everything together makes a piece of art.

You don't see that in film too much. At least not in the USA.

God this movie was #1 on the top 100 when I was in high school...

Watched this in cinamatic lit in school. Decent movie

While I think it is one of the greatest movies ever made, I wouldn't say it was the greatest. I'd have to go with the Godfather.

I've seen some of those AFI shows on TV but their rankings always seem off. I guess people join AFI and vote on stuff like this?

I agree that AFI was way off in their rankings. I like IMBD's top 250 movies a lot better. Although its mostly based off of user votes.

You join and get a list of the movies to vote on. I'm not sure how they pick what movies are listed though.

These are the people that make the movies. They appreciate the work and the art behind them, the advances made in the industry through certain films. While we may not agree with everything they do we need to appreciate that these are the directors and producers making films so they know a good artistic work when they see them.

I agree with the innovative for the time. I mean that movie is years ahead of its' time. And if you look at the obstacles that movie has overcome at the time, it is one of the best. But on a grand scale, the movie isn't one of the best. I mean, it's not bad, but there are much much better movies.

And I'm not dissappointed at the lack of explosion or boobies, or the fact that it is black and white. I very much enjoyed casablanca, the malteese falcon, and a few others that were in black and white.

I just overall dont' think it's the best movie of all time.

Big War Bird

Citizen Kane is by far the best movie of all time. Not since Birth of A Nation had a movie broken so much with convention and at the same time created new ones. No movie since has had a 1/10 of the impact on conventions as Citizen Kane.

Its a great film... Not the best, but its definitely up there.

To Kill A Mockingbird is another great film (if not the best).

I think Citizen Kane certainly should be recognized for the great achievement it was so in that sense I can see it being way near the top if not #1. However it's not a movie I'd watch over and over, there are many others that I can still watch numerous times. Alfred Hitchcock made good ratings and I've seen some of his work more than a couple of times. I don't think I could actually come up with a #1 movie, there's way too many out there to have a set favorite.

When a polarising movie like this makes it to the top of these lists, I tend to think of it like this; When asked who is the greatest guitar player of all time, the stereotypical response would be Jimi Hendrix.

Whilst Jimi was an incredibly talented guitarist, he's by no means the most talented playerof all time, not even of his own time. The reason he's so often lauded as the greatest, is the impact he had on not only the world of music and guitar playing, but his image elicits a time of peace (and war) and of people coming together with one common cause.

When a movie like Citizen Kane makes it to the top of the Greatest Movies Of All Time list, it's not only there on the merit of it's story, cinematography and acting, but the impact it had on the world at the time.

exactly. which is why "top lists" are completely irrational. they're only good for 5 years or so.

I love the explanation. This is how I would have liked to explain it, but I'm not as great as TSJ.

Citizen Kane is a great movie. I agree with the whole impact at the time thing...but beyond that it is still one of the greatest movies ever made IMO.

Very few movies hit that note for me. Just cinematic perfection...I love it. DEFINITELY deserves to be on the top and I don't see that ever changing.

Orson Welles is probably the most talented man ever to be in Hollywood. Citizen Kane is like, the perfect screenplay. Just amazing.

If you actually look at the AFI top 100 you'd see that they are mostly the same movies even after 10 years.

Wow. Raging Bull is #4? That's pretty cool. Great movie but I had no idea it was that highly regarded. I think Marty S. has some better films like Mean Streets and Taxi Driver. But Raging Bull is still incredible.

Probably DeNiro's role of his life.

Actually Citizen Kane was little seen and little commented on at the time. The pic was a quasi attack on newspaper giant William Randolph Hurst who directed his papers to destroy the movie and largely succeeded. He even offered RKO $800K to not release it. Citizen Kane won only one Oscar for original screenplay.
