If you leave it up to the top 2, they are between a rock and a hard place.
1. they choose 12 days, they incur the wrath of the people who get 12 day bans and could possibly lose refs or trades because of it
2. They let them stand the way the are, and the people who think the behavior was crappy and should warrant a ban think they got off too easy and coould lost trades or refs.
it's a double-edged sword.

Yeah I know, me and you were kidding like we always do, but I guess they're tired of it. I wouldnt want to ban everyone for 12 days, cause some people dont really deserve it (ex.MMM), its not jus tmy decision and I dont wanna be hated. But whatev, see u when I see ya 8)

I just wanted to say my opinion on this whole thing I am sorry to see people getting banned, but i also dont think anyone cares whos feeling they step on or who they hurt as long as everyone has a good time! it does not matter at who's expense.I personally would never be that hurtfull to anyone ever period!

Why would that be? I guess you can say us older folks take everything seriously no matter where it is said. Guess that comes with age who knows? But I have been working the internet for over 17 years and I have always taken what is said to me anywhere to heart. Us older people like to play around and joke too but we do it in a thread we create or in IM or skype not in people's posted threads. I think this is the difference here.
And I applaud forum admin for taking action. We all need to work and get along together and think before we post.
I always say laughter is the best medicine and it really is! But it could have been done in a special let's joke around thread.

I didn't find anything wrong with your first post, you were thanking the mods and I'm sure it was appreciated. This isn't the first time we've seen a new lady poster getting flamed and make a subsequent post about how rude and unfriendly we are, it's becoming a common occurence here. While I've never partaken in any of the flame fests, you should understand that we're guys, and we like to act stupid sometimes. Just look at the guys around you in real life. Don't they make fun of each other for fun? We're not doing it to hurt each other, that's just the way we are. I think women don't tend to be like that, and therefore, threads like this get too "serious." You could've easily played it down as well.
So while the guys should take it down a notch, I think the ladies should also be more understanding. I've had my share of flames here but I would never take them seriously enough to be hurt or make a post damning the offenders. This is still a majority male internet forum and you should not be that surprised at behavior like this.

About the bans; I dont think you should be banned for the amount of posts you made in the 2 threads. For example the smileys werent really bashing anyone, it was just everyone being stupid, especially when the smileys just kept changing.

Yeah, unless Lori was part of something like DARPA, DoD, CERN, or a major educational institution back then I doubt it was the [i2046e9c620]internet[/i2046e9c620], but she could very well be referring to the myriad of other network networks services available back then, to include X.25 and UUCP (UUCP Usenet, anyone?)

So while "consumerized" use of the internet didn't take off until the early 90's (the first dial-up ISP was established in 1989 but it was years before they became widespread), there were plenty of predecessors that allowed people to insult either other online. ;)
Back on topic hehehehe, it doesn't really matter IMO that we're "mostly guys." It's about basic respect of others. People act differently online than they do in real life, because they can get away with it, plain and simple. That doesn't make it excusable. Just like none of you (I hope) would use much of the language you use here around your mother/grandmother/aunt/etc. Saying "we're just guys" is a cop-out and shirks responsibility for your own actions. I'm a guy and you don't see me severely insulting even those who get on my last nerve. And there are more than a few of you who get on my last nerve. I may be blunt, but I try to be respectful until somebody just insists on pushing my buttons. IMO if you don't know someone well enough, you should watch your words and your tone, because people WILL take it personally -- it's human nature. Some may have more tolerance than others, thicker skin, etc., but they all have their limits, even on the internet. At some point you get your feelings hurt, get pissed off, etc., and it just isn't called for in 99% of cases. Certainly not this one.
So everyone should rest assured that the staff here will not simply excuse inappropriate behavior as "juvenile male hijinks" and leave it at that.

The reason for the punishment is simple.
You all made a newcomer feel like a complete twat. You didn't think about what you were doing, you saw an opportunity to make fun of someone or something they said or did and ran with it.
If an old-time member had made this thread I would've let it slide because chances are they'd know you were just taking the piss, but if that's how you're going to treat someone who was simply thanking us for crediting their trades, how many newbies do you think are going to stick around when they see others being treated like that?
It may have all been in good fun, but you didn't think about the person on the receiving end, that's why you're being punished.
Also, you guys may want to leave your ego's (teh f0rumz wil b teh bor1nz wen we iz not 0n hurr!1) at the door after your ban expires.
