Midland

("Midland" is not necessarily the same thing as "Midwest") The default, lowest-common-denominator American accent that newscasters try to imitate. Since it's a neutral accent, just because you have a Midland accent doesn't mean you're from the Midland.

WHat the hell is up with Question 7?

[quotefd739a76f5][bfd739a76f5]7. What vowel sound do you use in the beginning of the word HORRIBLE?[/bfd739a76f5]
I say HORRIBLE with the same O as in HORSE.
I say HORRIBLE with the same O as in HOT or STOP.
None of the above[/quotefd739a76f5]

Maybe I'm an arse, but why would you say HORRIBLE with any vowel sound other than O, and doesn't HOT and STOP have the same vowel sound as HORRIBLE anyway?

[quotefd739a76f5]13. How do you say the first A in PASTA?
Same A as in MAT or CAT
Same A as in FATHER[/quotefd739a76f5]

[quotefd739a76f5]16. How do you say the "oo" in ROOF?
Like the "oo" in FOOT
Like the "oo" in FOOD[/quotefd739a76f5]

lol What?

You guys consider those words as having different vowel sounds?

This quiz baffles me, but I took it anyway. ?

Most people don't know it but this is actually what dictionaries are based on. If you don't believe me, pick up any American dictionary and look up "source" and "sauce" and you'll see they are written with the same vowel pronunciation.

I've heard people say that scottish accents are especially easy to understand as long as it's not too strong. I used to work with a lot of scottish and didn't have any problems.

It's harder to read text after it goes through the translator, kinda like reading trainspotting.

Wow, you've actually read it (not being sarcastic, but most people only watch the film). When I first read the book I found it impossible to read, because even though that's how I spoke when growing up, we were (obviously) taught to read and write correctly.
