scores came in for May, just now. I did fairly bad for my standards. Retaking in october for a goal of 2000.

1770 For me. Writing killed me
600 Math
630 CR
540 Writing

Going for a 2k in October retake.

When I took it for a third time at the beginning of this year

570 - Math
520 - Critical Reading
550 - Writing (9 on essay)

Didn't achieve my goal, but...oh well. Still going to my #1 choice college, and I was a little below their recommended SAT score...they didn't care about the Writing section.

ilanbg

24-05-2007 09:05:25

The writing section saved my ass—especially the essay.

The trick is to use personal experience (way easier to evoke emotional reaction than using historical events), and to make up that personal experience to perfectly fit the essay at hand.

The time limit was never a problem for me, but I work pretty quickly. I always had 5-10 minutes to spare per section, after reviewing my answers.

doylnea

24-05-2007 09:28:40

For all grad school tests, (GMAT, LSAT, MCAT) the writing section is a joke that all test prep classes suggest following a specific format. Does the writing section really matter on the pSAT and SAT these days?

A 32 isn't good enough to get in? That's a 99 percentile score, I would've thought it good enough to get into almost anywhere, provided you met the other qualifying criteria. Then again colleges are a lot more demanding and competitive than they were 20+ years ago.

shakamd

25-05-2007 08:51:04

Yeah, I had a 3.8 GPA to boot / The commonapp has really exploded the number of college applications being submitted each year, people usually only applied to a couple schools back in your time, now everyone applies to at least 5 (I personally applied to 10). So to filter out the kids who just applied to 'see if they could get in' tons of kids are being thrown onto the waitlist.

Yeah, college is getting more competitive and alot more expensive. Only a few years ago the peak COA (cost of attendance) was around 30-40k, now its around 50k.

2180

took it awhile ago since I took a year off between HS and college.

However, my rank/GPA were pretty rough. It got me into my school of choice (UPenn) but it must have been a close call. I had great letters of recommendations from teachers and 2 alumni who I met through an old job of mine.

nytrate

24-06-2007 07:02:45

I think the SATs are very simple tests and that almost everyone could score a perfect with enough time. I think it's time/nerves that screw people up.

Especially the math section. It's all easy math but you have to rush through it and it's easy to make silly mistakes. It doesn't measure how sharp/smart you are, but how fast you can take a test.

SonTenshinhan

24-06-2007 08:41:28

Woah, Nytrate, you got a 2180 on the SAT and then decided not to attend college right after high school? Why exactly? I mean obviously money couldn't be the reason, especially with those scores, you could have gone to many different universities for dirt cheap and transfered to your school of choice when you could afford it.. I suppose the reason could be private, but if not I'd like to know why you'd make such a decision. I have two close cousins who have made the same choice and the only thing I can see is that they've opted to risk both their future and their dreams. So... ah, why?

nytrate

24-06-2007 08:51:50

risk a future and dreams by taking a year off? LOL

I don't see how that is. I actually did some work that I'm very proud of in the interim.

If you're focused there is no reason why a year off would hurt. Some people fall into the trappings of a job and bills too quickly and never get around to going to school...but that's not the case.

and a 2180 isn't really all that great considering ivy leagues schools. It's probably average or below average for ivy leagues and other top schools.

why is taking time off risking anything? I'm very interested in knowing since it just doesn't make sense to me.

I traveled. I worked for a non-profit. I finished some personal projects that might end up becoming my career (and might end up paying for my college loans which will be massive). Oh yea, and I had a lot of fun.

Iloveipods2

24-06-2007 09:50:41

yeah, I've asked around alot of grads and med students. They all would go back in time and either study abroad or take a year off during undergrad.

technically nytrate(what ever her name is) killed two birds w/ one stone. It also depends on what you're going into.

It's ALOT tougher to take a year off if you're going pre-med. The entire undergrad pre-med is a weed-out class after weed out class experience.

digressing though, DO everything you can to do well on your SATs.

most colleges will 1st look at your GPA, then your SAT. If you don't match their minimum GPA, then won't continue looking at your app(think of it as a "you made it to the next lvl" type on thing)

Then they look at your SAT or ACT, both of which you can study tremendously for.

One thing that has helped me out alot(for the SAT and just writing papers) is being subscribed to dictionary.com's word of the day e-mail. Almost all of the words included are part of the SAT/ACT word bank.

lol, my bad for the long post. I might post more since I was a SAT/ACT allstar. There's a bunch of tricks to getting answers right (ACT essay requires you provide counter arguments, stuff like that)

Nytrate that's an awesome score. I bombed my testing. My ACT ended up being a 28 the second time I took it. Only good thing was a 12 on the essay. Rensselaer definitely like something about me to take me into their accelerated management/law program. Only 3 students a year get in, so I am so happy. Guaranteed law school acceptance, can't get better than that. This 3 year program kicks ass, if I do well these first 2 years I can go to any law school. We are connected to Columbia, and that is an auto-acceptance as well if I maintain a certain GPA. So don't worry guys, sometimes they look beyond test scores.

the first time I did best on english and worst on science, but the second time I didn't finish english and did better on science. I found that completely ignoring the intro paragraphs and just letting the questions tell you where to go is best for science.

the ACT is dumb anyway. the questions are easy, but the time given is ridiculous. during the breaks all you hear from kids is "I had to guess on the last __ questions!" the SAT is definately trickier, but at least the time limits are reasonable.

I still have the first half of my senior year to improve, and I'll probably give each test another shot. also, did anyone here take SAT subject tests? how were they?

Berky34

24-06-2007 22:37:31

29 on ACT. Wanted atleast a 30... oh well. Two of my friends got 36's.
35 on sciece, 34 on math, like a 26 in reading, and something else in english i forgot. I wanna go to U of I for their school of engineering, if not just go in undecided. idk what to do.

Everyone is saying how they did bad on the science. I find it incredibly easy though. Some of the questions seem like common sense to me. maybe it's because im taking AP chem, but a lot of the questions aren't fully chemistry based

Yeah, I'm big into writing, although I prefer sonnets over stories, for the most part. I can PM some upon request, I suppose.

Here's the essay I wrote for the SATs, which I got a 12 on

[Page 1[=http//homepage.mac.com/ilanbg/SAT1.jpg]Page 1 and Page 2[=http//homepage.mac.com/ilanbg/SAT2.jpg]Page 2.]

[quotefb24699b5f]ESSAY PROMPT

Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below

[quotefb24699b5f]It is not that people dislike being part of a community; it is just that they care about their individual freedoms more. People value neighborliness and social interaction--until being a part of a group requires them to limit their freedom for the larger good of the group. But a community or group cannot function effectively unless people are willing to set aside their personal interests.[/quotefb24699b5f]

Adapted from Warren Johnson, The Future Is Not What It Used To Be
Assignment Does the success of a community--whether it is a class, a team, a family, a nation, or any other group--depend upon people's willingness to limit their personal interests? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.[/quotefb24699b5f]

[quotefb24699b5f]It was my luck I happened to be naturally gifted at soccer. My father supported himself through college on a full soccer scholarship, and so while I had never played soccer in my life, it was simply genetic I would be good at it. During the two seasons I played, I learned the individual abilities of players did not always reflect the success of the team overall—a fact that proved favorable to only a select few.

During my first season, my coach put each player on the field at least once per game, and rotated positions throughout it. Everyone was given equal opportunity to play regardless of skill. The result was apparent in two ways the players enjoyed playing together, and the players grew used to losing. We won two games in the entire season.

My second season of soccer harbored a very different coach. This coach drilled us and found which players were best at which position. From there, his roster remained the same for every game we played. Although I played every game and every quarter, there were some who simply never played at all. This was understood and accepted among my teammates. We went on that season to have a perfect record and to win the championship. Our coach's method was successful, but at the expense of those lesser skilled.

In this way, one could argue the benchwarmers [sic] contributed to our championship by keeping out of the way. Surely our success lay in patching our weaknesses and playing on our strengths. But while our team thrived, our community faltered. While we had won the championship, I didn't even know the names of all my teammates; in contrast, I still remembered the names of all my teammates from the year before. While the most effective strategy was the one that put the team before its members, it was also the one that failed at uniting the players together. In this way, we were not a successful team but rather a hindered community.[/quotefb24699b5f]

Posted for reference to those taking the test; as far as advice goes basically write some sentimental, moralizing bullshit. (For the record, at least half of this essay is fictional, heh.)

Bump?
I forgot to bump this last month...I couldn't find the time to search for it.

Anyway, I retook the October SAT's and ended up getting a 1960.
640 Verbal, 650 Math, 670 Writing. I was happy because I went up 220 points from my last test in May (1740).

I took them for a third and final time last weekend. I'll post my results in two weeks when the scores come in. I felt I didn't do as well, but it is also because I didn't put as much effort into it as I did for the October test.

I'm currently spending the next three weeks rigorously studying for the Math 1 and Chemistry SAT II's in December. I'm in AP Chemistry now so hopefully that will give me a slight edge.

Anyway, what did you guys get?

Thanks.

There is no max on the number of times you can take the SAT.
And what schools are you taking that Math I for? Some schools that require it won't take it because it is too easy to get a 780-800 on and is like 7th grade math.
If you want an easy high score take Physics. I sucked in Physics and hated the class but got a high score because the curve is so generous.

samz465

15-11-2007 08:06:13

I know theres no max, but a lot of schools take the averages of all your SAT's when you take 4 or more.

At the time (1993) I thought it was funny, but now it's a little bit embarasing, becuase I was a great student in HS (3.8) and college (2 degrees in 5 years). Yet look like a dope with a score like that.

yeah, I avoided french because of your advice. I took lit, math 2, and bio. the only thing that went well was lit, so I'm already resigned up for math2/bio in december, without seeing my scores. maybe I will be pleasantly surprised and get to skip my december test day.

study for them samaddd; they're tough[/quote911cbb5689]
Will do D .
Taking AP chem at the same time helps reinforce some of the practice I do for the Chem SAT II.

How's the Biology one though? I took AP Biology last year but I didn't try very hard.
I ended up getting a 3 on the exam.

bio was hard. you need to know a really broad range of info and apply it to labs and whatnot.

you can make a sparknotes account and get 1 free bio practice test (and continue to make new accounts every time you want another free practice test), and see how you do.

have you considered taking lit? I did the least studying for it, and I thought I did pretty well.

also, what math class are you in? if you have finished precalc/trig, then it would be beneficial to take math 2... 42/50 = 800 = huuuuge curve

samz465

15-11-2007 14:25:45

Nah, I'm currently in Precalc.
I didn't get smart until 7th grade...and by then it was too late to be placed in honors math.

That happened to my friend.
He got a 720 on the math, and ended up getting a 400 something leading to a total score of 1150 or so.

Got a link anywhere samz for info on that? I don't doubt you, makes sense, but never heard of "a lot" of schools that do that and don't want to be giving bad info to my brother or anything.

[quoteb73d393a42]How many times can/should I take the SAT Reasoning Test?

You can take the SAT as many times as you like, but you probably should plan on taking it no more than two or three times. (Let's face it, you have better things to do with your life than SAT test preparation forever.) Many students and parents fear that colleges will frown on multiple scores, but almost all schools now consider students' highest scores when evaluating them for admission. Some schools take the highest combined score (the sum of the math and verbal sections) from a single sitting, while other schools take students' highest math score from any test date and combine it with their highest verbal score from any test date. In neither case is repeating the SAT detrimental.[/quoteb73d393a42]
Looks like I'm wrong.
I had [ub73d393a42]heard[/ub73d393a42] that taking it more than 3 times is bad, but I guess I was misinformed.
I didn't get to do a full search, but for the most part I found that people said it is ok.
Sorry about that.
If I find anything that says otherwise I'll be sure to post about it.

SAT I 2330 (800 CR/770 WR/760 M)
SAT II 790 US, 740 Math II (need to retake as I was sick)

Pity this probably won't be enough to get me into UC Berkeley. lishrugsli

scores aren't everything. excellent score though. at my college everyone has scores like that, but what separated me from them was my extracurricular activities. my scores weren't fantastic, but i still got into a prestigious program that only few colleges have around the country. now, all i need to do is maintain a certain gpa and great law school here i come.

Aurelius

Agreed. I have pretty good ECs as I'm a volunteer coordinator for a pretty good youth group that gets tons of grants a year. Only issue is that my grades aren't up to par. UCSD will pretty much be a shoo in for me and that isn't so bad considering how Boalt Law's report has Berkeley and San Diego on the same "toughness" level.

Which law school are you aiming for? I'm still one tier away from law school fun stuff like LSATs and such but my brother is in admit mode and he's gotten into Duke and University of Michigan and is waiting on the higher ranked schools to start sending out decisions. The grind for grade never ends, eh?

Powerbook

I'm in a 3 year program, so I gotta start thinking about it now. My GPA will definitely be enough for all schools, but my LSAT might be lacking. I won't be taking the LSAT for over a year, but I still need to nail it. I will be applying to law school a little less than 2 years from now since I am in year 1 of the program. I got an acceptance guarantee at Albany Law School. However, Columbia Law School is conditional. I have to get a score in their average to be accepted. (

Nice job.
Math 2 is pretty difficult.

I got my SAT reasoning score and it was total garbage compared to my last score. I don't even want to think of what I got. The scores were around what I got my first time...pretty disappointing.

Those are solid scores as well, you are so close to a 30 too. I don't mean to make you cringe but you only needed .25 a point and you would have gotten a 30. Hopefully they will take that in consideration that your's was a higher end 29.

Just took the Chemistry and Math 1 SAT II's this morning.
The Chemistry wasn't too bad, I assume I got a 750+.
The Math was decent, but I'm hoping I get at least a 700.
I guess I just have to wait and see what happens.
