For the average consumer, Dell's are a great deal - they are cheap, reliable and easy to use. For the hardcore gamer, or mobile user, there may be better options.

In my experience, Dell does act in a less than forthright way when advertising their deals, by pre-selecting the more expensive options for their PCs. However, if you select the lowest cost options, you can always check out with exactly the same deal as described in the ad.

This is a law firm trying to make a name for themselves by suing Dell. This will go no-where.

My company uses Dells and I was desktop support and they are fine. Building yourself is the best but for a normal user they are good and not expensive...

for laptops? for general day-to-day and business, probably lenovo (i am going to get one of their tablets soon! )) for desktops, build it yourself. it really isn't that hard.

Tholek

21-05-2007 12:21:42

Be careful...."Lenovo" isn't necessarily "Thinkpad" ;)

Lenovo branded notebooks have yet to really prove themselves, although I'd expect some of the "goodness" to spill over from the Thinkpad line. I don't know that firsthand, though.

Work gave me a Latitude D620..thats what i'm on right now, works fine but wouldn't be surprised if the hdd crashes in a year.

Or you folks with desktops...look out for bad mother boards with swollen caps.

dmorris68

21-05-2007 13:25:04

Swollen caps affected far more than Dell -- nearly all mobo manufacturers were hit hard -- and virtually all have been out of the production channels for years now. If you're still seeing swollen caps then it's probably old models and/or old stock.

While I've seen a bit of decline in Dell quality (and certainly support) over the years, I still recommend them to folks looking for a good bang for the buck PC. I build all of my own personal desktops, but I've bought Dell laptops and desktops for years at work, and with the exception of a couple of parts (that Dell didn't make) have had no problems to speak of. The Latitude notebook is notably reliable and well-built. I have a Latitude D810 that's about 1.5 years old now and it's been great, as have the other Dell notebooks I've had. Lately, for personal use, I've developed a preference for Toshiba, but that's not to say I think Dell sucks.

I agree with doylnea, I've spec'ed literally dozens of Dell's over the years, and you can always get to the advertised price if you pay attention to what you're doing. That's just another opportunistic "money grab" litigation attempt if I ever saw one.

I have a Toshiba laptop, when mine breaks, i'll be getting a new one...I've had my satellite for probably 6 years now with out a single problem.

Tholek

Yeah, but some low-end Toshiba's are generic rebranded models. (Saw some on Black Friday)

Toshiba has hurt their brand with those. So has HP.

Perhaps, but in reality there is actually a very small number of notebook OEM's out there -- almost none of the big names make their own notebooks anymore.

This was posted just this morning on another forum I frequent, when somebody asked about notebook suggestions

[quote2dc4452df4][from another forum]

Here's a VERY good site

http//www.notebookreview.com/

The forums are hugely useful for research and reading what owners have to say. The thing to be aware of is that there are actually only a few laptop makers

Quanta, Compal, Asus, MSI, Uniwill and Clevo, and that's basically it (there are others, but these brands have market dominance).

Almost all of the others you hear of, like Dell, Alienware, Falcon Northwest, Voodoo etc are actually made by one of the above names.

Clevo

Sager NP9750,
Voodoo Envy u709,
Alienware Aurora m7700,
Hypersonic Aviator FX7

They are basically all the same computer, which means if you buy a high end Sager you get the same innards as a Alienware at about 40% the price!

Sager NP9890,
Falcon Northwest FragBook DR6800,
Alienware MJ-12 m7700i,
Voodoo Envy u703,
Hypersonic Aviator EX7

Sager NP5950
Alienware Aurora mALX 19" SLI
Voodoo Envy u909

Sager NP5760
Voodoo Envy u734
Hypersonic Aviator CX7

Compal=

Dell
HP
Compaq

Compal HEL80 =
Voodoo Envy I534
Hypersonic Aviator MV6.

Quanta =

Dell's Latitudes
Sony's Vaio
IBM's (Levnovo) laptops.

ASUS does make their own laptops, so their support is simply top notch. You are dealing direct with the OEM for support. No one is going to know the product better. Of course they're known for all their other parts as well. Mainboards, video, etc

MSI, similar to Asus, makes their own laptops.

There are a few others, such as FIC, Mitac, ECS, AOpen and Gigabyte, but some of them don't sell direct to you and others are lower end stuff.

The point here, is that if you want a very nice laptop, don't go the way of the Boutique makers or ginormous companies that just slap their label on and then outsource support to India.

Instead, go to the OEMs or one of the smaller online shops and you can get a MUCH better deal on the same equipment.

I currently have a gov't bought Dell XPS M1710. which is very speedy and can play HL2 pretty much completely maxed out at 105fps. So yes, it's fast.

The other side of the coin is, it's 17" laptop and weighs 10lbs or so. Consequently, if you are travelling a lot, you may want to consider other options.

If you are wanting to game, and want to travel a lot, your best bet right now is probably an Asus G1. They can be had for about 2K. It has good resolution, can be used with a larger monitor, and weighs about 7lbs with power supply. 15.4" widescreen style display and an Nvidia GeForce7700. I'm almost certainly buying one later this month.

If you are NOT as mobile, able to leave your laptop someplace for days or weeks, then consider one of the 17" Sagers. It is simply the best bang for your buck.

Ah yes, but there's a difference between OEM and O[i3227667b91]D[/i3227667b91]M, and in the case of DELL/Sony/Lenovo (Well, the Thinkpads) it's an ODM relationship. Those products aren't branded any other way. They are manufactured to spec from Quanta.

That doesn't make me feel so much better though, since I believe Quanta does low-end OEM stuff like Compal's garbage too (Like the Tosh I referred to), but there's a difference.
