I'd say it's more the attitude and mentality you had when you were growing up. Rap could very well have possibly had an influence on it. I'm sorry to hear that though. Maybe you can try getting started at a community college or something.

this is got to be the funniest topi cever raised. Rap music is retarded but you grow up out of the phase of wanting to be a thug. Well at least I did.

I make very good money and rap music has not slowed me down one bit. Id did learn however to speak more disciplined when in a corporate environment however. No more yo, holla back, and/or what up shorty let me hit that around the office no more... well unless we are all young and just joking around. Actually Ive noticed older people who grew up on rock constantly curse about work. Like fuck, shit, bullshit, and bitch are commonly heard words around the office.

Well anyways rap music is just music.. If you let it dictate your life then you have no one to blame but yourself. Stop being so impressionable and just be yourself. Oh ya no doo rags or hoodies to job interviews.

and rap music only makes you dumb if you allow it to make you dumb. My best advice would be you dont want to take the advice of a former drug dealer or the advice of someone pretending to be a drug dealer just to sell records. Then again I wouldnt take any advice from some of the rock bands from the 60/70's. And dont even get me started on how retarded those mo kids are. Puts on flame resitant suit

Not all music and most music doesn't have nowhere near a hard effect as hip-hop does to the black youth... maybe to other races it may be different but it for it's pretty much culture for us and it's something that destroy us from a young age and when we're ready to get into the workforce we have no idea and no skills to do so.

Seriously, like 80% of the posts in this thread have been totally stupid.

Rap is a music genre. Music is a form of expression; it does not influence people—they're drawn to certain forms of expression based on their own influences.

That's like saying listening to classical music will make you smarter. roll

once again stop being so impressionable. I understand black people from all over are integrated into that culture and the majority of blacks like to take pride in that culture. From hiphop to basketball I know black people follow their stars.

Its a little sad for me though that these are the black leaders now. In the 60's you had MLk, Malcolm X, and Mohammed Ali(great humanitarian/social thinker). Nowadays all you have is maybe Obama, Tupac(well hes dead), Lil Wayne, and Allen Iverson as the black leaders. No original black thought or movement being visible and it makes me upset that rappers keep dumbing down the genre and as a result dumbing down the peopel who listen and subscribe to it. Even thoguh in the 90's you had gangsta rap you also had a lot of intelligent and thought provoking rap. Today all you have is someone trying to sell an image and that image just happens to be thuggin, disrespecting women, dealin drugs, murderin cops, snowmen, lettin it rain, and leaning with it.

Rap does not have to be dumb. Its the artists and the labels that they work for that make it dumb. It is a genre and can be expressed in any way the creator wants it too. Id also blame society for this mess as we are attracted to violence and descriptions of violenc e and gangsterisms. Hard to find a solution.. but if you search hard enough you will find a rap artist that enlightens you and makes you feel proud to be a fan of rap.

I agree with good2speed that not all rap is about thugging and disrespecting women & authority figures, and promoting drug use.

I can't stand thug/gangster rap, but I do enjoy tasteful and artistic rap. Yeah, I said artistic, I know people will argue that all of it is artistic, but I'd rather subscribe to my own definition of art, thank you very much. ;)

Being older than most of you and having a pretty varied taste in music, I remember a lot of the early rap and I enjoyed it then. The first "official" rap song that I remember was Sugar Hill Gang's Rapper's Delight. I owned the [iff5526d735]vinyl[/iff5526d735] LP and used to play it over and over and over, memorizing all of the words. Mind you, the full cut of Rapper's Delight was like 20 minutes long, non-stop. Some 30+ years later I still remember a lot of it, and now the tune is in my head again. lol

So don't generalize all rap as bad. However the culture around the "street" rap is definitely responsible for young people being perhaps unfairly judged. In our youth we like to think that we're only responsible to ourselves and that society has no business judging us and telling us how to act. Then we grow up and realize there are pretty much two groups of people in the world those who continue to embrace the ideological culture of their youth ("I don't care what everybody else thinks of me"), and those who succeed. In our society, you don't succeed without some degree of social acceptance. So you either grow out of it and compromise those youthful ideals, or you grow old blaming society for all of your problems. In other words, it's about [bff5526d735]personal responsibility[/bff5526d735].

good2speed

16-05-2007 14:16:24

I agree with everything you said but just needed to point out a miscommunication. 2/3 black people admitted that they think todays rap/hiphop industry is one of the biggest problems. A majority of the 1/3 who didn't see it as a negative of course were youth.

Thousands of dollars worth of music and music paraphernalia and it's still one of my favorite songs of all time.

The problem with Rap today is that the majority of the people who are into the Hip-Hop culture don't realize that the talent is better than ever but harder to find. Then you have those that don't like Rap and never give it a chance, there is such thing as intelligent rap and there's tons of it, it's just mostly underground.

I hate the commercial rap on TV and radio, it's the whole reason Nas dropped the new album "Hip Hop is Dead". That's what most people hear and it's killing the rep of the Hip-Hop community.

For starters...
Lupe Fiasco
Sage Francis
The Last Emporer
KRS One
The Roots
Greydon Square
Pharoe Monch
Dilated Peoples
MF Doom
Mos Def
Talib Kweli

Barely even scratched the surface, I would argue that this generation's rap is better than it ever has been and it's only getting better. All of the above named artists are extremely intelligent and have political and personal themes in every one of their songs (except club hoppers which are for fun). I don't like it when people bash rap because chances are they know nothing about it. It's one of the main reasons I am who I am today and basically the whole reason I am so open-minded and never judge things before I get to ACTUALLY know it.

I could name a hundred rappers who are never heard but have an incredible talent and positive message.

Listen to Sage Francis "Mullet", one of the best spoken word/poems of all time.

Rap is all about the upliftment of humanity. Believe that.

Dude, get real. Rap music is not a religion so you can't blame it for your failures. Rap music does give youngsters the wrong impressions, but it's like watching movies. It's all for entertainment and not to be taken seriously. I would recommend listening to classical music to back track all the damage rap music has done.
