I'm looking to find out how much I should expect to pay next year for cable/satellite and internet. I want to find the cheapest way to go about it, from cox it looks like it will cost $85 a month for the combo.

Is there a cheaper way to go? Such as satellite internet/cable? I want faster than dialup internet, since there will be 3 computers on the network most of the time... so where should I be looking?

The zip code is 67042 if anyone has somewhere that can look up services in the area.

Any help is appreciated, and +Kma given for help!

I wouldn't recommend using Satellite Internet unless you absolutely have to (i.e. you live in a rural area far, far away from the telco's CO or cable company's trunks).

1. There is latency when sending/receiving to the satellite.. You'll experience latency in the range of 450ms-850ms (depending on the type of satellite system used)... While this is perfectly fine for those who only plan on surfing the web and downloading files... This is too much latency for those that like to play games online that require real-time network chatter.

2. There are FAPs (Fair Access Policy) that Satellite Internet providers enact on it's subscribers... For example, DirecWay has a 200 or 250 MB per day limit before the speed drops down to 56Kbps.

If either reason is going to be a problem for you... I would go with the best possible terrestrial connection and if you can't get that... Try to get dial-up.

Also, I believe the equipment costs $500 to set-up... So it's also an investment at the start.

As for what I pay for internet...

320k/256k + local phone roughly $95 per month

Rural Alaska is a cheap mother.

We have Earthlink DSL, I can ask my mom how much we pay a month.

I think our speed is 6 MBPS down and 768 up

the only thing that would really be a problem is dial up, since i would also have to pay for a phone line... but what you said about satellite internet doesn't sound like it is for me...

thanks for the help so far guys! More is still appreciated )

I pay nothing because I work for a cable company. Unfortunately, the internet is slow, and we don't get HD. I might change to Comcast for the HD. I get every channel available now though, so... shrug

Have basic cable, which is up there in price. didn't opt for HD or on-demand or any of that. But the cable modem is super fast and $29.95 per month.

I think we pay like $110 for the hd dish network package. And around $900/mo for T1.

Comcast Cable Television $ 61.20
Comcast High Speed Internet $ 42.95
Taxes, Surcharges and Fees $ 8.65

Payment Due Date AUTOPAY $ 112.80

i get 6mbit down / 384kbit up cable internet and the TV service includes a small array of free HD channels plus some HD on demand and all the standard features

that total might include some housemate-purchased ondemand movies

tjwor, take it from the guy down the street who only has access to Satelite and Dial up, I'd stick with cable through Cox or DSL through SBC. Sat is $500 up front and $59 a month(directv), there's another ISP Blue Streak in the area, but they want $400 up front and 40 a month for 1mbs, it's a point to point connection. They put an antenna on your roof.

Cox is offering that 12mps now for 29.99 a month for 10 months or something. I don't know if Cox is in El Dorado, I know that Sunflower cable or whatever is what's in Lawrence.

Wow, you guys make my connection look like crap.

I have Time Warner Cable for I believe $34.95 a month, and SBC Yahoo DSL (1.5 down, 256up) for $24.95 a month.

We have Comcast for Hi-speed internet and cable. We pay around $140 a month for both services, but they have a special deal right now (which we may very well take advantage of) where if you get internet, cable and phone service, you pay only $33 each ($99 per month) for 12 months. It sounds like a good deal to me, especially since I don't like my phone company anyway...

verizon now is offering cable, phone and internet for $99 combined. tv is thru directv and is their basic package. u can add hd for $11/mo.
i highly recommend directv, we have had nothing but a good experience for 2 years now. I always get essentially free upgrades with equipment, although that will be different now that they are on lease.
Since we had dtv before the verizon offer came to fruition, we get $10 off our directv sub/month for having verizon dsl. we pay $29.95 for verizon dsl and i always have a great connection on xbox live. I torrent all the time and used to run an ftp server without problems.
I am currently looking into fios
also of note, $900/mo for t1 seems insane

I've had RoadRunner and digital cable thru Bright House (used to be Time Warner) for YEARS now, so I'm getting screwed every month...something like $132 for the package. I keep saying that I'm gonna call them and tell them that I was offered this great deal from another company to see if they'll lower my price, but it's set up on autopay, so I don't even think about it.
