So I don't know if you guys have heard anything about some new HD-DVD crack http//fc01.deviantart.com/fs17/f/2007/121/0/2/__Support_Freedom___by_z00kus.png[" alt=""/imgbb9074c1cb] but apparently the DMCA is pulling it down wherever they can find it, does anyone know what exactly do you do with those numbers? Are they for cracking the discs or the hardware?

Well I know that HD DVD has changed their keys recently.. As for BRD, they're now implementing BD+ on all new discs.

So AnyDVD HD may work now on current BRD discs.. But it won't work on newer discs with BD+ unless someone figures out how to crack BD+

BD+ is the reason for the recent delay of certain discs from WB on BD (Matrix, etc).

Check out digg.

Just about every story on the front page is about the key (after digg removed two popular stories about the key yesterday).

If you use a program called AnyDVD, it can decrypt HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray discs. ;)

Just read your post. Yeah, it did.

The hex number is the key used in every current production hddvd disk. They trying to keep it off the internet though legal threats, but that seems to have the opposite effect.

There is a Geek Riot on Digg because they pulled this story

No, they are making tons of crap diggs that are hitting the front page and they all involve the key.

[quoteb4c0baefa7="Gooogler"] but apparently the DMCA is pulling it down wherever they can find it[/quoteb4c0baefa7]

I would imagine that the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) is attempting to pull it down using the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act). The DMCA is a law, not an organization.

DMCA abuse is punishable though. If the MPAA can't specify the justification for each request (which they probably do), some aclu wannabe might throw it back at them.

Could someone explain what these numbers do? I saw a thing on YouTube, and all he did was open up Command Prompt, and type in HDDVD Backup and stuff.

None of those numbers...I'm confused..

What the numbers do

OK so HD-DVD discs are encrypted. Regular DVD and Blueray also but that's not what were dealing with.

In order to be able to encrypt something you have to have a way to decrypt it later. HD-DVD players and computer software all has a way to do this.

Basically (my understanding is not perfect) - Each hardware HD-DVD player and software player has a key that they use to decrypt another key for an individual disk. Then they use the second key to decrypt the movie and watch it.

This number (and yes, it's just a really big number) is some kind of master key that can be used to decrypt all current market HD-DVD disks. You need software to use it (such as anydvd that TFOAF mentioned) but that's what it does.

The fear in the minds of the MPAA is now people can use the key to decrypt a HD-DVD movie and copy it to a blank HD-DVD disk. The reality is that currently blank HD-DVD disks cost more than the movies, but that's not the point.

The motivation for cracking the key varies between people. There are those that want to be able to copy the movie, others want to be able to put it on their ipods and such. Others (probably the majority) want to be able to watch HD-DVD movies on computers running Linux, and there are no (nor will there ever be) any licensed programs for watching HD-DVD movies on Linux. The same thing happened when the DVD encryption was cracked a few years ago.

You could always encode the files to WMV-HD or x264 and burn them to a DVD-R (or DVD-R DL) for full HD playback on any player that supports either codec (example Xbox360).
