The housing market in Virginia is finally starting to come to its senses but you still can't get a nice house with a yard in a good area for less than $250,000.00

And that's pretty much a little house in a little neighborhood.
If you want privacy with a nice house your looking at $350,000.00 and up.
There is actually a million dollar neighborhood just down the road here in the sticks. If you want to get into the city, the prices are better but who wants to live there? No yard, no privacy, you could hear the neighbor fart. No thanks. I was just wondering what the situation is around the rest of the country.

Have you been listening to the buzz about the huge spike in foreclosures?
I was wondering where everyone was getting the jobs to get the money to have all of these huge houses in this area, but the truth was they didn't have the money. They were mortgaged up to thier eyeballs and now that the adjustable rate has come calling, no one can make thier payments.

My sister lives in Atlanta and my best friend lives in Charlotte and they are both broke. Not going there. The best prices are supposed to be in Texas, but who wants to deal with the rattlers and the fire ants?
I think we'll just try to find something around here since sellers have finally come to thier senses and have decided to actually list properties at a more reasonable starting point.

Is anyone really making enough money on here to support a house payment and all that? Seems like feast or famine from what I have heard.

We moved to Denver about 10 years ago from SanFrancisco where the prices were insane even back then. In the meantime, Denver's gone a bit crazy I think...It's hard to find a decent house for a family of 5 within the city limits for less than $700,000. And most houses which are over 40 years old are being torn down and huge multimillion dollar mansions are going up instead...and people are buying them!! My husband and I often wonder who these people are who can afford a $2-$3 mil house and still send their kids to private school (which all have waiting lists in this area). It's just insane! On the other hand, our house has appreciated [ic4bc775058]a lot [/ic4bc775058]so we'll be laughing all to the bank when we sell it next year. D

I live in Atlanta (actually inside the perimeter) most house near me are $500000 and up my house is only about $250-$300 but thats because we got it a long time ago for like $100000. I think if we sell in a few years we can get well over $300000

Price in my neighborhood in in Lawrenceville are $150 to $180 - I live in a poor neighborhood, all my neighbors are illegal immigrants but very nice people. I would move but I'm about a $1/2 million in the hole right now.

Bingo. I live in the Dalton area. More millionaires per capita than anywhere else in the SE, unfortunately I'm not one of them.

I built my 3000 sq ft two-story Colonial on a .66 acre lot in 1998 for $207,500. Today it'll appraise for around $300K. For that size of house and the area though, it's great. I live in a suburb of Dalton, on a hill at the end of a nice little cul-de-sac, with woods behind and to one side (only neighbors on one side and across the street), with a beautiful view of the mountainside about a couple miles to the east of me. We're quite happy here.

After reading all your posts, I guess my husband and I are poor folk. We live in Northern Missouri. We bought a repo house a few years ago for $72,000 in one of the nicest neighborhoods in town. Most houses in my city go for for about $120,000 - $150,000. We look at the house we bought as an investment.

JordanE

Vegas has gone down alittle bit. For example the house that we bought when we first moved here cost $800,000 we sold it for $500,000 about 5 months ago. The house we just bought appraised for $1.6 but we got it for $1.1 . All in all an okay house (about 1,800sf) starts at about 200,000-250,00 with a small yard but in a nice area.

Fort Wayne has extremely cheap housing compared to a lot of the country.

I just looked on Zillow and a house in Sycamore Hills, one of the nicest neighborhoods around, with one of the top 100 golf courses in the country is going for $420,000 at 4600 square feet and 4 bedrooms.

Another house in this area with 1800 square feet is going for $127,000.

My uncle brought his house in Orlando for under 400,000 like 3 years ago. Get this....5 bedroom, 4 bath, pretty big pool, a full size basketball/tennis court, and a huge back yard. That section hes living in is called "millionaire row" but what a freaking bargain for a house. Its probably worth 1+ million now.

My house(my mom bought it from my uncle^) here in Queens NY cost 500,000 like 5 years ago and now it values at around 1 million.

1 bedroom apartment/Studio = $850-1100+/mo
Houses range from $500,000-2-3Million (highest i've seen been 7 million) and these arent mansions. Opera has a house she paid I think it was $50 million for down here in Montecito. If I were to own my own house it probably wouldn't be here.

Come down to the Dallas area!!! Houses are priced pretty fair here. You can find a 2-3 bedroom house with a big yard for about $160,000.

This is interesting, i was going to make a thread the other day about how people are affording really expensive small houses or why they would even want to live there compared to the kind of house you can by for the same price in other areas. Are wages higher is places that houses are priced so freakn high? Like in California?

And to your second question, the minimum wage out here is higher and jobs do pay somewhat higher, but not at all proportionately to how much higher homes are. What are apartments like for some of you who live in really cheap areas? I'm paying $1,180 for a one-bedroom in a relatively good/quiet/safe neighborhood (or at least as quiet as you can get in Orange County). I live in one of the most expensive areas of the US. I've chosen to live there in part because of my job, in part because of my personal life, and in part because of the opportunities it affords me for recreation, culture and professional development. I am paid almost the same amount of money as where I grew up and worked for several years, but my cost of living was 20% lower, but I am happier here, and to me, that's worth the extra expense.

Well we went out again today house hunting. I soooo don't want to be in a subdivision. There is a great big huge house at the end of our road, about a half mile away that has a par 3 hole on the property and they are asking 1.5 mil. That's nuts considering the average household income in this area is only about 60,000.

Everything in our price range butts up right against 3 other houses. Bogus.
I guess we'll keep lookin' for that needle in the haystack!
I would love to move to Texas, but then we'd have to battle the rattlers and the fire ants!!!! But you can get so much house for the money down there! It almost makes it worth it.
