[quote7a80311284]From PLAY! A Video Game Symphony

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Jason Michael Paul Productions, Inc. announced that video game composer Jeremy Soule will be attending the PLAY! concert in San Jose, CA on May 26, 2007. His music from The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion will be performed as part of the concert. Jeremy will also be joining a limited number of randomly chosen fans from the crowd to participate in a meet and greet that will be held immediately following the show.

Jeremy Soule is an icon of video game music. The year 2006 witnessed one of the best years yet for Soule with such critical and commercial success coming from The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion, Guild Wars Factions/Nightfall, Prey and the World War II epic Company of Heroes. Soule won the inaugural MTV Video Music Award in August for "Best Score" and was honored with his third career British Academy Award nomination in October. In November, Soule won another "Best Score" award from Spike TV and was the recipient of numerous press awards such as Game Daily's "most iPod-worthy score". In concerts, Soule's music has been a component of the successful PLAY! world tour that has featured prominently Elder Scrolls as well as Prey as part of the concert program. Says Jason Michael Paul "Soule's music is flavorful and stylish. He has created some of the greatest video game music of all time. Jeremy's melodic composition and emotional context have made him an Award winning composer... My hope is that the fans will come out and show their appreciation for the distance he has traveled to celebrate game music with us".

Tickets to the PLAY! concert in San Jose, CA will be available to the general public starting Saturday, March 31 at 10 am online at http//www.ticketmaster.com/venue/229426 or at Symphony Silicon Valley, 467 South First St. San Jose, CA 95113 or by calling 408 286-2600. Ticket prices for this concert range from $36 - $72 a seat with a select group of the best seats selling for $100 including a PLAY! Package of gifts. Additional PLAY! concert dates will be announced as they are confirmed.[/quote7a80311284]

Stop being so dense. Just because the music is from a videogame doesn't mean its nerdy or stupid to listen to it. These guys are composers and it's their jobs to create music. The fact that they use a full orchestra just makes it another classical music concert, like seeing the Boston Symphony Orchestra or something. Most of the music is great and could make it without being attached to a game.

Thanks guys! Nobuo Uematsu was at the one in Canada in 2006. That would have been an awesome site, he was there with the Black Mages playing FF Advent Children music. As for my taste in music - which is video game music and I own a rather large collection of imports - I would like to have everyone making fun of me know 1) you obviously have a lot of free time to make comments and crap in my thread 2) like Killer said these people are renowned composers and all because they make music for video games does not make them any different from any other composer. Just think of all the great video game music over the years - Halo, FF, Elder Scrolls, the list could go on! (sigh)

Harry Gregson-Williams composed the music for several high-budget movies and also does the music for the Metal Gear Solid games, and it shows. His MGS tunes are famous and pretty damn badass.

Yep theres another! )

Also here's some info on Jeremy Soule and why he inspires me so

[quote3ade0d000e]Jeremy Soule began life as a passionate composer of symphonic music at a very early age. Since the age of five, Soule took an intense interest in the symphony orchestra. “The Orchestra is the ultimate instrument. I find that it has the ability to define nearly every human emotion in existence” stated Soule from his Cascadian studio in the Great Northwest of America.

Mastering the art of orchestration, melodic composition and emotional context was no easy task for the British Academy Award winning composer...

“Every day is a challenge. I am not able to take anything for granted when it comes to music. Music is a literal language that is a life study for me. I find that the natural inspiration behind sound starts with the beauty of the human spirit. Everything in music is a reflection of who we are in Creation. Composers draw from the same sorts of places as other disciplines of the Arts in that we are all connected to some greater cause and energy. Defining our place in this energy is the beauty of our Art.”

That video games could be considered “Art” was unthinkable over 30 years ago during the debut of the first game machines such as the Magnavox Odyssey. The sights and sounds of the mid-eighties machines also did little to hint at the coming revolution. Today, video games feature development budgets in the tens of millions of dollars and often command some of the top talent in an ever-growing $20 billion industry.

For over a decade, Soule has provided music for some of the most successful and admired games of all time. [b3ade0d000e]Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, Harry Potter, Total Annihilation, SOCOM The Navy Seals[/b3ade0d000e] and the [b3ade0d000e]Elder Scrolls[/b3ade0d000e] series can all attribute music to him. His versatility as a composer has also been demonstrated from his critically acclaimed traditional Asian score for [b3ade0d000e]Guild Wars Factions[/b3ade0d000e] to his work with children’s properties such as [b3ade0d000e]Rugrats[/b3ade0d000e] and [b3ade0d000e]Lemony Snicket and the Series of Unfortunate Events.[/b3ade0d000e]

The year 2006 witnessed one of the best years yet for Soule with such critical and commercial success coming from [b3ade0d000e]The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion, Guild Wars Factions/Nightfall, Prey[/b3ade0d000e] and the World War II epic [b3ade0d000e]Company of Heroes[/b3ade0d000e]. Soule won the inaugural MTV Video Music Award in August for “Best Score” and was honored with his third career British Academy Award nomination in October. In November, Soule won another “Best Score” award from Spike TV and was the recipient of numerous press awards such as Game Daily’s “most iPod-worthy score”.

In feature films, Soule’s Walden Logo was used at the start of the $744 million earning film [b3ade0d000e]The Chronicles of Narnia The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe[/b3ade0d000e]. His work with Narnia also continued with director Norman Stone’s critically acclaimed film [b3ade0d000e]C.S. Lewis Beyond Narnia.[/b3ade0d000e][/quote3ade0d000e]

I can't comment on Williams' video game music, as I have never heard it. BUT, every film I have seen with his music has suffered as a result of his terrible, shit-tastic music. But worse, his sense of drama is truly amateur. This guy couldn't find an original tune or harmony to save his life. Hollywood has never been known to foster integrity and high art, but this guy Harry Gregson takes music as an art to a whole new low.

I can't comment on his movie pieces because I haven't really listened to them, but his MGS pieces are undeniably awesome.

Also, he did the music for a few Michael Bay flicks. Not even Beethoven can save a Bay film.
