"BitTorrent is a method of distributing large amounts of data widely without the original distributor incurring the entire costs of hardware, hosting and bandwidth resources. Instead, when data is distributed using the BitTorrent protocol, recipients each supply data to newer recipients, reducing the cost and burden on any given individual source, providing redundancy against system problems, and reducing dependence upon the original distributor."

Basically, it allows people to download files from many sources, thus getting the data at a faster rate.

Its a way to share files. Torrent is the file type but you need a program to manage and download them. I use Azureus...

A .torrenturl==http://=http:///url file can contain many files in that one torrent file, you download the torrent file and open it with a program used to download torrents. But torrents sucks, if you're really good you have the real hook up ;)

If you dont' have a hook up they are a hell of a lot better than downloading from limewire or whatever someone might use.

We all can't be as 1337 as manofice I guess... But when I can download my favorite TV shows at 400k/s without looking too hard, I'm happy.

Torrents are better than Limewire.

And safer, assuming you stay off the public sites.

Yeah, I got the highest tier cable internet from Comcast, then shortly after started bitching about how expensive it was. I got them to give me interweb and the cheapest TV service level for about $50 D

DC++ FTW
Download anything at about 1.5MBs
Then again it's not really an intraweb thing, just the college network.

Are you still getting the faster internet for the lower price? Or you getting the slower connection now?

At school there it is set up that our connection only goes so fast. . . who would have guessed that illegal downloading occurs on a college campus???

And at my home I just have the cheapest cable internet through a local ISP. It's like $44 per month.

Heh, Torrents and newsgroups are good for certain things I guess. Speeds are decent and a lot better than using stupid p2p programs.

I remember I got banned from my internet in college because I was downloading at a rate of around 2500k hahaha but it wasn't to funny when they shut off my internet (

NO. NO. NO. The BitTorrent protocol is completely legal. Using it for distributing copyrighted material is what's illegal. Sorry for yelling no, but ignorance about stuff like this is why schools and politicians want to ban "BitTorrent," when they don't even know what it is, or that it can be used for legal things. It is a very useful tool that saves the original file server from having to use too much bandwidth.

Me as well. I was going to point out that a lot of "legit" software folks are making their products available by torrent. Especially the larger downloads, like Linux distros, game demos, and a lot of open source stuff.

And in fact I read recently that the inventor of BitTorrent is working out a deal with some TV/Movie studios to legally distribute purchased/rented videos via torrents.

Agreed. And I understand that, but you must also agree that in most cases it is used for illegal downloading.

Depends on the school. I know some schools sniff traffic and block bittorent. What school?

Zanpaktou

29-04-2007 15:41:56

anyone know if FSU blocks torrents? I highly doubt that it does.

jonohull

29-04-2007 20:05:12

My school (UW-Madison) doesn't block torrents, but they did shut down our LAN DC++ hub. We have a 5 gig per week limit on our out-of-network transfers (but I did find a loophole hehe). If your school does filter torrents, just use a client like µTorrent that supports encrypted transfers. That way, they can't tell what kind of traffic you're sending.

Zanpaktou

30-04-2007 14:14:12

I figured there'd be loopholes, I didnt think one as simple as using encrypted packets would stop it though, awesome.
