Hello. I just signed up to this forum and am a little irritated. I have no posts indicating that I'm ready to trade (this is my first post), yet I've received 5 trade request PM spams. In fact, when I'm done posting this topic I'll probably have two more.
Don't assume that a new user is new to freebies. I'm an A4F member and have not had this problem at all. If someone wants to trade with you they will contact you or post that they are open to trade PMs.
I hope this stops soon. I would like to become a contributing member of this forum.
Spammers are just going to shoot themselves in the foot by making people leave before they have a chance to check this place out.

It's just the way it is. They see you on the new members thing and PM you. Sorry to hear that but it should clear up soon. In the meantime just contact the mods about the spammers. )

Let us know, we'll take care of it. It wasn't as big of a problem before all the new folks joined in the last few months.

I'll post an announcement since this seems to be a continuing problem.

Would one of you mods please let me know what constitutes spam. in pms. I haven't sent anything to knowledge that was any different than what was sent to me when I first joined. I certainly don't want to break the rules nor do I want to run anyone off. Please let me know so I can correct it and not make the same mistake. Thanks

Spam is sending unsolicited PMs to users that have not indicated an interest in the type of trade you're proposing. As an example, sending someone a PM that says something to the effect of, "I saw your thread asking for x, but would you do y?"

Leave those types of questions to The Trading Post.

Thank you. I helped a friend sign up a week or so ago, and within literally 3 minutes she had 6 PMs from people wanting her to do sites - when she didn't even know what she was doing !!! If I'd have thought of it, I'd have had her report it as spam - as it was, I just had her delete them. But what about the people who sign up on their own, without someone helping them?????

Laurel

doylnea

17-04-2007 09:32:05

Sending anyone a PM spam, that is a message to say "welcome to the site, I'm happy to help you, oh, and you can help me by signing up for my site for $6" or anything to that effect is punishable by 3 days of no PM abilities.

If a user posts in this thread that they've received PM spam, a mod or admin will investigate, and take action as necessary.

I might add that you want to be careful about just PMing someone out of the blue in general. Give a new person time to surf the forums, lurk for a while, read, and see how things operate. Then, if they have questions, they can post them out in the open. That way, the questions and answers are there for everyone to benefit from.

17-04-2007 10:14:25

so I just got a PM from someone that mentioned the site I'm looking for but wants to pay me to sign up for another site from the same network instead. This is def. PM spam right?

I have before, but not really lately...
But what I hate more than anything is posting a topic in the trade forum saying I am paying for greens, not saying anything about trading green for green and then I do get several PM's from people saying hey I'll do this if you do this for me.

He never posted her email or her myspace page so it still is private information they (meaning mods and admins) have the right to check out the members of their community I believe especially if something seems amiss.

As a mod we can see all your emails. We can also see your IPs. I randomly check up on people to make sure they aren't a former user come back to scam again. I would also like to inform people if a user is pretending to be a girl when he isn't. Next step is scamming. If you don't like it, too bad. I'm here to protect our users...

First of all, nothing is private from the forum staff. The options to "hide" information about yourself regards the public membership of the forum. Wolfie didn't disclose the e-mail himself, he simply pointed out the results of his search, which by the way used publicly accessible sources. His e-mail address wouldn't have turned up a hit on MySpace if it wasn't actually part of his MySpace page -- and therefore not very private to being with. ;)

Since this forum allows and promotes trading, and as a result there is the possibility of scammers, the staff here have a responsibility to our membership to use whatever information is available to us to check out suspicious members. It's not like we're hacking into their credit reports and school records.

To you, perhaps nothing was amiss. As admins we see things through a different, experienced set of eyes. Certain things trigger us to check into those things a little deeper.

I'd say it's definitely borderline -- it doesn't explicitly ask you to complete a site, but it couches a strong hint of doing so.

A truly genuine welcome e-mail is fine, but it should leave out the "I'm always needing referrals so if you are interested..." line if it doesn't want to be perceived as spam.

khardy

24-04-2007 15:27:11

OK, I joined this forum yesterday and made a post about needing referals for a site I am trying to complete. I check my inbox today and have 20 + PM's wanting me to complete sites for money. I don't want to complete sites, I want referals for myself! Is this condsidered spam? Getting offers for things I have not indicated an interest in? A real waste of my time reading thru all those PM's to see if any of them wanted to do my site.
