So i declare that i have a really crappy immune system and was thinking of way's to boost it.

The past 6 months i've had soar throats, cold's and virus's and it's getting to be a bit too much to handle.

I was thinking about starting to take daily vitamins, or that stuff that reduces your chance to get a cold/flu by %300(?)

Any suggestions?

I am suffering from a really bad immune system also. Maybe I should look into vitamins as well.

Mine is bad, not as bad this season. Usually I just take in a lot of vitamin C.

And dupe, do not go into a job solely for money - you will regret it. Pick on something you like to do.

Zinc is a great one for sore throats and colds you already have. Echinacea is supposed to be a good immune booster, as is Vit C and Vit B...daily doses won't hurt, anyway.

Have you recently moved to a new place, new school or new job? It could be that you are just around new viruses that you haven't been in contact with before...so, you're being "seasoned".

You could always try my Dad's way if all else fails "I don't have time to be sick"

If you get sick, don't automatically run to the doctor or immediately take meds or pills or something for it.

My wife (and her siblings) was brought up that whenever they started to get sick, or they had something wrong with them, they'd go to the doctors, get shots, take meds, go on antibiotics etc and now her immune system is terrible (I think) due to not letting her body try to build up her immune system by taking meds.

She gets sick very very easily and has to go on all types of antibiotics, medications etc to make her better, whereas I on the other hand, who was brought up by letting my body fight any infection or virus and only taking something for it if my body couldn't fight it, get sick maybe once a year and since my immune system has had the chance to build up, when I do get sick, it lasts for about a day or two.

I've noticed a huge trend in this country between "sick" people and medications. The pharmaceutical industry here is sickening (pun not intended).

That is how my gf is. Her mom is psycho and takes her to the emergency room all the time. In the past year her mom took her to the ER like 6 times for like a sore throat. And now she gets sick all the time.

I on the other hand never liked going to the doctor and would only go when I was really really sick. I actually have not been to the doctor (except for the ocassional physical) in about 8 years. I dont' get sick very often at all. In fact I take care of my sick gf all the time and I almost never get sick. And if I do, it is nowhere near as bad as her. Like she will have strep and I'll get a mildly sore throat for a day or two.

Lately however my immune system has gone into a downward spiral. I gained a lot of weight because I got too busy with schoolwork and didn't have time to go to the rec. And when I did I wanted to just relax because of all the work I've been doing. So I find myself getting sick a lot lately.

So I think I need to get to the rec and start working out again.

Bah, I wish I could find time to work out, between traveling across the South, and a pregnant girlfriend my "me" time is virtually non existant.

well, i would suggest a few things.
the first is that frequent colds by itself is not an indication of a weak immune system. the constitutional symptoms u get is actually a sign that your immune system is working (sore throat, stuffy nose, swolen lymph nodes, fever, chills, muscle aches) as well as that the infection is happening.
NONE of the over the counter medications have been proven in a good study to make a difference in length of symptoms or morbidity or mortality.
the ER should be for emergencies. if your symptoms are such that u can delay therapy while at work or while sleeping, chances are they are not severe enough to go to an ER. they are a good reason to see your doctor in his office or call. there are reasons to go to the ER though. but a quick phone call to your PMD can help guide u to teh ER or to the office.
the most important way to prevent colds and GI bugs is good hand washing.
wash your hands after going to the bathroom with soap and water or waterless hand gel. an easy way is to carry some waterless hand gel with you.
wash your hands always before u eat
wash your hands after being in contact with someone sick
dont share a drink or food with someone who is sick
sometimes colds/viral illnesses are inevitable. the average toddler can get up to 15 colds/illnesses per year.
hope this helps

I have a feeling I will be making an ER visit before weeks end because of my "viral bronchitis" my immune system is terrible last time I had a cold - not even this bad - it turned into viral pneumonia.

People like your girlfriend are the reason that people with broken legs and huge cuts have to wait at the emergency room. The ER is for EMERGENCIES.

I also believe that if you fight stuff off your immune system gets stronger. My mum never ever let me stay home from school and I pretty much never get sick now that I'm an adult. I do notice that the more exercise I get and the better I eat, the less likely I am to catch a cold.

Not saying the OP has it, but if you have constant immune problems, the next time you visit the doc you may want to ask them to check you for Lupus. Short of AIDS, I think it's the most prevalent auto immune deficiency disease.

Never said you did. ;)

Lupus, however (not an STD), is really underdiagnosed though.

Eat right, excercise, and don't put your fingers in your mouth, biting nails and such cause those minor ailments. Wash your hands regularly, and you'll rarely get sick. Take a daily dietary suppliment as well, to keep your immune system strong.

I've gone to the ER four times in my entire life. One time I was in a car accident where the car flipped 4.5 times and was taken in an ambulance and needed a bunch of stitches and catscan.

The next time I got hit in the head during football practice and just fell down for a minute. I didn't want to go but the it was the schools choice. They wanted to take the liability off themselves. Ended up I had a pretty bad concussion.

Next time was also from football. I would have waited but the game was saturday night and the Doc's office wasn't open on sunday when I went. Ended up having a slight concussion and a dislocated thumb.

Last time I was at the ER was also from football. In fact about 3 weeks after the previous time. I got my arm pushed up during a gauntlet and I couldn't move my arm at all. It was just hanging there. It took forever to get looked at for that. And they didn't tell me a thing. Eventually after a few hours I was able to move it about shoulder height and they said that they couldnt' tell what it was with their equipment, probably a sprain or a slight tear of the rotator cuff. That I should see a specialist. And they gave me some pills for pain, and a sling.

This is another thing i noticed.

Recently, due to me trying to quit cigarettes, i start biting my nails more.
Possible cause to me getting sick alot more recently.

Will defiantly pick up some of the sanitary hand wash gel that CVS has.

BElieve it or not, That causes those small sicknesses like colds and soar throats VERY OFTEN. you'll notice you won't get sick as much if you stop. It's one of those things most folks overlook, but it really is significant in this case. Glad to be of help.

Something easy to do to get over a cold or flu faster is drink lots of WATER. Your body uses a lot more fluids and energy trying to fight the sickness, and simple water can make it go away faster. Drink water even when you're not thirsty. The point is, if you don't know already, drink a lot of water.

Just eat a healthy diet, with lot of vegetables and low glycemic fruit. Take refined sugars and white bread out of your diet. Replace sugar with Splenda, and white bread with wheat. Try TOTAL cereal fro breakfast every morning. Go for a brisk walk 3 times a week.

Living a healthier lifestyle has done amazing things to my immune system. Pills are crap. Vitamins are OK, but better if you get them by eating right.

eat organic, eat more vegetables, take less pills, exercise, get a good amount of sleep, do some activities to prevent or control stress like exercise, stay away from fast foods, repeat

try taking flaxseed oil once a day it is supposed to help your immune system, start looking up natural remedies that are good for your body

My dad is a doctor, so when I was little, I turned to him when I was sick. I never went to hospital or received medications for any sickness I had. If I was ever sick, he told me to drink water and continue on with my life. Hell, I went to school with a 103 degree fever. I get sick three or four times a year for about a week, but I don't take care of my body at all. I don't exercise much, eat much, or practice "excellent" hygiene. It is almost like a trade off for me. I'd rather get sick once in a while than spend my time worrying about my health.

This is what I've done all my life and I'm happy with my decision. I don't take medicine or see a doctor unless I'm dieing and my immune system is pretty strong. What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger...think about it.

Ive been in the ER probably over 50 times in my life. I was hospitalized for pneumonia and asthma 11 times in my first grade year and have stayed in ICU on three occasions, once from theopholyne toxicity and cardiac arrest, once for liver toxicity from the medicine INH (which I had a false read on a TB skin test - I was merely allergic to it) and once from viral pneumonia. I have always had poor health since I was a small child, my asthma began when I was 2 and has steadily gotten worse over the years.

My oxygen intake was and most likely is at 45% since my last allergist visit - I cant take the shots because Im never well enough to do so. I also have sinuitis, chronic bronchitis and allergic to penicillin and sulfate plus allergies to all trees, all grasses, cats, dogs, rodents, molds, and Im lactose intolerant. (sigh) I could go one but why it just makes me depressed.

The only thing I fear in life is having a child, I dont know if Im healthy enough to have one or if my asthma would get worse during pregnancy. The doctor said it could get better, stay the same or sadly get worse at which point once I am pregnant it is MUCH harder to subdue an asthma attack and I have seen people die from asthma during pregnancy and it frightens me so much.

I used to have very acute asthma, and had to take steroids on several occasions, most because my teachers were idiots and didn't pay attention to when I wasn't breathing, because I was a kid and very quiet. I also had pneumonia with everyone else in my imediate family except one person. But I am all over that now pretty much I just grew out of asthma or the fact that I exercised a lot which put more stain on my lungs but helped me develop a capacity for air.
