I've wanted to make a discussion for movies for a while now and after seeing Blood Diamond I'm dying to talk about it. Basically, I thought the movie was fabulous but I kind of wish I didn't see it. I'm kind of a softie and now I feel depressed over the whole story especially because it is very true and realistic. It's just incredible that this stuff is happening and I feel like a hippie or something for thinking this but the movie just totally blew me away.

Second movie I saw Shooter last Friday and I'd have to say it was one of the best films I've seen in a while. I'm a guy, so naturally I like action, violence, and all that good stuff. I thought Shooter had the typical story line but Mark Wahlburg did an excellent job and I thought the movie was pieced together very well. There were a few unrealistic parts but hey, that's what keeps you watching. I also thought the girl in there was really good lookin' so that helped. 8)

Anyhow, anyone seen these movies lately? I'm sure a lot of people have seen Blood Diamond but a lot of people here missed Shooter. I plan to see The Departed next since Markie Mark is in it and everyone always asks me if I've seen it. What movies are on your list that you plan to see soon?s

I've got three daughters - 12, 3, & 2. I used to watch alot of movies (I'm a big Godfather fan). Now, if it isn't animated, or if it doesn't star Hillary Duff, I ain't seein' it. Unless, of course, I can get it PPV on Direct TV and TiVo it.

I did see the movie Anaconda once. It had a big ole snake in it.

You guys should check out Namaste London if its playing in your area. Its an Indian film, but it is one of most enjoyable ones I have seen in a while. So if you are into foreign movies, I would highly recommend watching it. Btw, has anyone on here already seen it besides me? Maybe some fellow Indian users?

Ghost Rider was deplorable. Avoid it at all costs.

I went and saw Pan's Labyrinth the other day, that was wicked-awesome. I'm taking a class about fairy tales so it fit in really well. Loved it (warning, graphic violence).

Gosh, I haven't seen ANY of those movies...gotta tear myself away from FiPG and get myself to the movies! For the last 10 years, I've seen pretty much every kids' movie made whether on DVD or in the theaters, but it's been a long time since I've seen a really good worthwhile non-kid flick. I've heard pretty good things about most of the ones mentioned here, so maybe one of these days my husband and I will rent one, put the kids to bed early and have a date night in front of the TV...gotta love the simple things in life! Hot Fuzz was really good but not as good as Shaun Of The Dead.

If anyone likes Simon Pegg you should check out some of his stuff he did in the U.K before he got really famous, like Big Trainn (modern day Monty Python), JAM (unbelievably trippy, surreal and disturbing), Spaced (genius comedy with Nick Frost from Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead).

I watched the new Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer last night. It wasn't terrible. The love story was a bit trite but the silver surfer looked neat, very mercury/liquid metal/Terminator 2 looking. Dr. Doom was in this one too, not sure what the story is on his survival. Some of the special effects were good but nothing just full out amazing. If you like the comics you might like it just to compare but otherwise, you've really got to want it.

I'm not expecting too much from it, I don't plan on seeing it. It seems like hollywood has gotten into the habit of creating somewhat shallow films, then marketing the crap out of them to get the big opening day cash blowout.

1408 is a kick ass movie, it's one of the few horror movies that does the genre justice. You have to really get into the movie though, and let it scare you. It's entertaining as hell, and the suspense is heavy, anyone liking John Cusack should definitely see this movie, he's good as always

I've seen

1408
Knocked Up
Ocean's 13
Fantastic Four

so far this summer

I liked all of them, except 1408. I'm not much for horror/thriller movies.
Fantastic four is clearly made to appeal to the younger(early teen) crowd. and btw another "Jessica Alba is nude but not really" scene.

I enjoy the Ocean's series and like this one more than 12.

Knocked Up was your typical 40-year-old humor except that it got chick-flicky at the end. but it was still hilarious [/spoiler]

where are you downloading all these movies from???

1408 wasn't bad at all, i enjoyed it.

I was really into and liking Mr. Brooks when the projector failed (it was at the part where he was on the plane flying out to his daughters school or whatever).... and I never got to finish it

Pirates 3 was good!

i really liked transformers too, one of the best movies i've seen in a while, that and Condemned, i don't see how critics gave it an F, it was really good, i saw it twice in a week.

i watched requiem for a dream the other night, and hated every second of it. watched shooter after, and then watched it again it was so good.

Running Scared is fantastic!!! Def. one worth watching.

i saw fantastic 4 and oceans at the drive-ins last weekend.... both of them were just OK... maybe 6-7 on a scale of 1 - 10

Wow, it was destiny for me to go see Transformers. I thought I saw Die Hard at 800 but it was actually Transformers so the lady friend and I went to see that and it was amazing. I wasn't expecting a lot but wow, it was so good. She even liked it so I'd recommend seeing it.

PS Anyone see the previews for National Treasure 2? (Book of Secrets, I think) I can't wait to see that one. Too bad it doesn't come out till 12-21!

I just saw Chungking Express[=http//www.imdb.com/title/tt0109424/]Chungking Express, I liked it a lot. I get the feeling you might like it too, it's very "visual."

I thought Death Proof[=http//www.imdb.com/title/tt1028528/]Death Proof was awesome when I saw it in the theater (much better than the CGI heavy Planet Terror), you can try that too.

Otherwise, how about some other older movies like Mean Streets and Taxi Driver if you haven't seen them. There's another 70's movie called The Conversation[=http//www.imdb.com/title/tt0071360/]The Conversation by F. Coppola that I've been meaning to see.

This holiday break I've managed to watch the whole Bourne series and it's been really good. I had rented the Ultimatum from Blockbuster after going three different times that day and when I got home to watch it, I watched it all the way till the last 45 minutes and it kept freezing. evil I'm going to take it back and maybe they'll give me some free rentals because nothing grinds my gears like that.

Anyway, I'd recommend the Bourne series to anyone who hasn't seen them and likes action movies. I'm into watching a lot of older movies that are like $2.00 rentals now at Blockbuster. Here's my want list so far

1. Boondock Saints
2. Pulp Fiction
3. Super Troopers (I only catch parts of this, never seen it from beginning to end)

Saw a few movies this week worth commenting on.

Charlie Wilson's War was great. Very well written and acted by all involved, it had a light comedic tone to it also that made it fun to watch. I didn't realize until the credits it was written by Arron Sorkin, and he was on the ball as usual. Massive props to Phillip Seymour Hoffman who was outstanding in the supporting role. Also the movie wasn't politically slanted with an underlying message which was something I worried going in. It just told the story as it happened, and to the best of my knowledge very true to actual events.

the other was La Vie En Rose. A French film about the life of singer Edith Piaf. If you can enjoy foreign films with subtitles I highly recommend checking it out as it was a great story.

Here is a spoiler for cloverfield (via themoviespoiler.com)

[spoilerc3e111efbe]The movie opens by telling us that the following footage was recovered
from the site formerly known as Central Park.

Rob's (Michael Stahl-David) friends are having a going away party for
him. Beth (Odette Yustman) Rob's love shows up to the party with a guy
friend, she leaves to go back to her apartment early. The party is
still rockin', then chaos as the lights go out. Everyone goes up to
the roof to see what happened. Classic rooftop scene from the trailer
(huge fire ball and monster movement in the distance taking down a
skyscraper).

Everyone decides to leave the city (Manhattan) so they go on the
bridge, (its Rob, his brother Jason, his brothers fiance Lily, Hud the
cameraman, and Marlena, Hud's interest.) They make it to the middle of
the bridge. More roaring and pounding happen. As Jason climbs on the
side of the bridge up on the supports to see what's going on, a HUGE
tail smashes the bridge and Jason with it.

The group finds their way off the bridge and into some tunnels. They
figure they will go to Beth's apartment (she called Rob earlier while
they were on the bridge - asking for help). Through the tunnels that
are now shut down and after some walking and funny commentary by Hud
they hear some odd noises. The nightvision on the camera comes on and
mini monsters are on the ceiling of the tunnel. They run the way they
came only to have Marlena get bitten, but she survives.

They now find their way into what looks like a department store taken
over by military planning and triage centers. Rob is constantly
telling the army personnel that he is going to go to his friend Beth's
apartment. Hud pans to several of the wounded and dead, then hears
Marlena say something to the effect of she doesn't feel too good. Her
eyes are bleeding and this alarms a few people in biohazard suits and
they immediately start screaming BITE BITE and take her behind a
curtain where you can see their silhouette. She doubles over and then
explodes literally with blood splattering the curtain. The military
guy takes Rob, Lily and Hud, down a back room to a door telling them
if they want to find their friend they have till about 0600 hours
until Operation Hammerdown commences (Leveling the city).

They are now back on the street and find the apartment buildings in
the distance. The building to the right is literally LEANING on the
building to the left. Sucky for them, Beth lives in the half fallen
over building. They decide to walk the stairs 50+ floors in the left
building where they find an opening to the leaning building. They find
Beth and she is impaled in her upper left shoulder by a piece of
metal. They lift her up off the spike and make their way back to the
building they came in. Mini monster attack but no injuries or deaths.

They now make their way to the base where the military guy in the
department store told them to meet helicopters and to leave before the
Operation Hammerdown starts. Lily gets in the helicopter but there is
not enough room for Hud, Rob, or Beth, so they get in another
helicopter. Lily's takes off and the rest lift off and start flying
away. They see the monster causing havoc down below, and then a
stealth bomber way above them drop a series of bombs which directly
hits the monster. They can't see anything because of the smoke. Hud
says they got the monster and just as he is celebrating, the monster
quickly rises up and takes out their helicopter.

Waking up now in the daylight morning time (everything else was
night), hurt but still alive are the three survivors of the crash.
They crawl out of the wreckage, shocked to be alive and inspect their
injuries. Hud looks for the camera and finds it and as he does, Beth
and Rob are scared to death and staring right behind Hud. Hud turns
around and is now under the HUGE monster, who gives a roar and eats
Hud, who drops the camera. Rob picks up the camera, runs with Beth
through Central Park and under a bridge then turns the camera on
himself and says his goodbyes to anyone that will find it.

It's now 642am and Rob turns the camera on Beth. She doesn't know
what to say. A couple bombs come and level the bridge, and the camera
is now under rubble so you can't see either person. You can just hear
them. Rob tells Beth he loves her...she says she loves him.

Immediately after she says it more bombs explode on them and we are
left to assume that they killed them.

lias to the monsters...I counted 5 legs, sometimes walked biped
sometimes walked on all 5, really indescribable.

Charlie adds
I think that it is very important to note the final few seconds of the
film, particularly as the camera is fixed out to the ocean at Coney
Island...If you look at the ocean, out in the distant on the right
hand side, you can see "something" crash into the water at a very
steep angle. I believe that this is the monster.[/spoilerc3e111efbe]

A am suprised at how great the first Narnia movie was. I am anticipating the second one alot. It should be pretty aweomse. The new Batman should be pretty great to, although, Jack Nicholson will be a tough joker to top.

Saw Cloverfield tonight and although I was at first feeling somewhat clueless as to what the movie was about, I began to appreciate it.

Although it might not be nominated for the movie of the year, it brought a great first person view that not many movies bring. In all honesty, it was pretty good. It is a movie to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Oh and I cant wait till the new Star Trek comes OUT in Dec. 08!!!!!!!!

I just got dragged into going to Fool's Gold today and although it wasn't as bad as critics claim. (They claim it's one of the worst movies) It wasn't good at all. It started out okay but then it just got tiring after everything proceeded to go wrong. The plot was much like National Treasure, but less exciting and more predictable. It was a little humorous but if you saw the previews you saw about 70% of the laughable parts.

I can't wait till American Gangster comes to Blockbuster on the 19th and I just rented We Own The Night today that is there now.

"The plot was much like National Treasure, but less exciting and more predictable."

Yeah I suppose so, but I was looking at it more from the angle of comedy more than anything else. I could have sworn I saw boobies during the part where he got picked up by those college kids in the boat. It was like a .5 second flash. lol

I was a little disappointed with Shoot 'Em Up, I mean I loved the violence and I thought the shooting scenes were okay but the movie just lacked substance. I was confused about the storyline that doesn't even seem good to begin with. I think the villains who are shooting at the main character are portrayed [b6e6329af2d]the worst[/b6e6329af2d] shooters ever. It's like 10 of them would be spraying bullets and none of them would even graze the main character in the wide open.

Saw "No Country" last night. Excellent movie, the awards were deserved.

Regarding Shoot 'Em Up I'm all for mindless action fare, but it was so over the top it bothered me. Yeah, I know that was the intention, but things were just so ridiculous I felt like I was watching a stupid spoof like Scary Movie/Epic Movie/Date Movie. Not what I was expecting.

I've been sick since late last week, took Friday off. So I've been catching up on a lot of movies. Others watched over the last few days[lista54395fa92][lia54395fa92]We Own The Night (excellent)

[lia54395fa92]Saw IV (meh...)
[lia54395fa92]American Beauty (yeah, just now got around to watching it. Also excellent)

Give it a chance? It's modern day female version of Death Wish, yet not nearly as cheesy. I like Jody Foster and Terrence Howard, and they both did well in it.

I agree I thought it was a really great movie too.

Loved No Country for Old Men, I think I enjoyed There Will Be Blood moreso. I was a little skeptical going in because I am not the biggest fan of PTA's movies, but this one was quite different than Boogie Nights and Magnolia. I think more people would probably enjoy No Country if they enjoy a good thriller, but TWBB is so haunting. Daniel Day-Lewis's performance and the films score(by Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead) are the centerpiece of the film.

and

Southland Tales - 7/10

09-03-2008 03:12:38

Be Kind Rewind - 8.5/10, but only because I am a huge Michel Gondry (director) fan. The movie might not be for everyone, and won't deliver laugh after laugh but is clever and innovative.

American Psycho - 8/10, I loved Christian Bale's acting and character in this movie. It's pretty entertaining and has a great ending.

The Usual Suspects - 10/10, I absolutely loved it. I bought it on iTunes a while back to pass time for a trip to Vegas, and fell in love with it (I watched it no less than five times the entire week). Kevin Spacey was a great actor in this and the writing was just superb. Watch it yourself, do NOT spoil ANYTHING about the movie for yourselves =]

No Country For Old Men - 9/10, Joel and Ethan Coen are great in their direction. Javier Bardem kicks ass with his most powerful performance to date

Juno - 10/10, I am definitely on the "Overhyping Juno" bandwagon. I saw it twice in theatres. Is there much more to say about that? The fact that I paid twice alone should've explained how much I loved it =]

There Will Be Blood - 9/10, I will give it one word WEIRD. Okay, and some more Daniel Day-Lewis was amazing as the lead in this, and yes you have to watch the "milkshake scene".

Michael Clayton - 8.5/10, Tony Gilroy proves that not only can he write great films but he can also direct like a champ. The cast brings out great performances by Tom Wilkinson, Tilda Swinton and George Clooney. The movie starts out slow at first, but if you just put some trust into Gilroy and Clooney the movie pays off in the end.

Yes, I'm a total film buff. In fact, it's my major.

I just saw War tonight and it was pretty good. I had low expectations about it because of what I heard but I thought the action was great. The ending was a little weak but overall I'd give it 3.5/5 stars.

I just got Netflix, here's my queue

1. No Country for Old Men
2. Sin City
3. Stranger than Fiction
4. There Will Be Blood - Releases on DVD Apr 08, 2008
5. Letters from Iwo Jima Watch Instantly
6. Man on Fire

Can't wait for No Country for Old Men. Sin City has always been popular and I've never seen it. Stranger than Fiction is great, Will Ferrell is good in that actually even though it's a comedy. There Will Be Blood - going strictly by the RottenTomatoes rating on that one, haven't heard much about it. Letters from Iwo Jima, just heard this was a good war movie. Man on Fire, I like Denzel and I've never seen this oldie.

Any takes on these movies?

anyone see Sicko?

That movie really just made me sad. Granted, it had the Michael Moore spin on things, but facts are facts. I live with a girl who is dying of stomach cancer and I see this shit every day. It's really really sad but it pales in comparison to the almighty dollar apparently.

The higher ups in healthcare, pharmaceuticals and the FDA should all be dragged to the back of the building and shot in the face. They have no morals, but they do have a new Lincoln Navigator and a $4000 hooker. Fuck them.

Diary of the Dead - 7/10
George Romero goes back to his indie roots and succeeds with an innovative "Dead" flick! Mr. Romero, apology accepted for "Land".

In Bruges - 8/10
WONDERFUL dialogue, great acting by Brendan Gleeson and Collin Farrel. Gleeson and director Martin McDonagh worked together in a short called Six Shooter which won the Academy Award for Best Short Film back in 2005, and this is McDonagh's first feature film. Bravo! You've got a DVD sale from meli.

liI rarely buy DVDs. In fact, I mostly borrow/rent them and rip to my hard drive and watch it at my leisure. If I do end up buying a movie, it's a well-deserved purchase. So far, only five movies have made my "Must Buy" list for 2008 Juno, No Country For Old Men, The Usual Suspects (I own this on iTunes but want the commentary track and yes I know it's a 1995 flick), In Bruges and There Will Be Blood.

I can never tell if you're being serious or not, but assuming you, for once, are......... I agree with you. This movie was bad-ass. Minus the whole tentacle in the dock thing. That looked like complete shit, but that ending was freaking fantastic. Spoilers Below.

[spoilerb25dc4ce7e]The book had a much different ending. It ended with them just driving through the mist, not knowing where to go next. It was understood that the story told was from his journal and the last entry was at an abandoned hotel they stayed at amidst their traveling and we never knew what became of them. The mist never lifted and the ending was entirely open-ended.

But on the up and up, he definitely banged that girl in the employee lounge in the book. That's why that crazy bitch kept calling them sinners. It wasn't just assumed that we all sin and they were included, she called the girl a whore, and that was, by all rights, not undeserved. [/spoilerb25dc4ce7e]

I just saw 21 and Prom Date. Go ahead and make fun of me about the latter but my girlfriend made me go see it. roll Prom Date was of course, terrible. 21 was pretty good, I'd give it a 3 or 3.5 out of 5 stars. I liked the gambling and seeing someone go from the bottom to the top but it followed the typical story line that you would expect.

Next up on the list for sometime this week is There Will Be Blood. Anyone see this one? I don't know if I should watch it, I heard it was boring.

There will be blood was a little on the boring side, as it was three hours long with not a whole lot of action, but the main character was really entertaining and the movie as a whole was really well done.

Definitely not as good as No Country, but I'd still give it a look just to say you did D

TWWB is AMAZING. It's not everybody's cup of tea, but give it a try. Daniel Day-Lewis is awesome.

Movies don't need action to be good =P Just look at Juno and Michael Clayton.

I recently watched Leatherheads, thought it was a bit good. About a 7/10 for me. As for Superhero Movie, let's just say that the next time there's a spoof movie at my theatre I am discouraging all potential viewers from it. Piece of shit "movie" (it doesn't qualify as one) that belongs on Youtube instead of in theatres. Apparently, spoof "movies" these days think that the only way to get a laugh is by stupid pop culture references and immature fart jokes. No thank you, go back on Youtube with your garbage. I don't need you guys to waste a screen that could goto, say, Smart People. Which was, by the way, a bit more than entertaining. 6/10, perhaps? However, I DID walk out of Superhero Movie after ten minutes.

Agreed. I liked it better than No Country.

As for those spoof movies, they churn those unwatchable things out lately because people actually go to them (like morons) and they make a quick buck. I actually liked the Scary Movie series but these other ones are horrible. I tried to watch Epic Movie but lasted 5 minutes (and I'm pretty forgiving).

I saw Street Kings this past weekend. Wasn't expecting much but I actually enjoyed it, it's a nice little shoot-em up action movie. Forest Whitaker is horrible in it though.

The wife, daughter, and I saw it this past weekend as well. We pretty much liked it even though it was somewhat brainless at points.

Funny you mention Forest Whitaker's role. I'm usually a big fan of his, but this time his personality just didn't fit the role, or something. I don't know if he got a little carried away and went over the top with his acting, or if his lines & direction were just poor.

Overall, still a good flick. Keanu Reeves notwithstanding. ;) (and in all fairness he did okay).

That would be Sandler himself, along with with Judd Apatow. A pretty successful bunch. ;)

I'm starting to get pretty tired of the formulaic stuff turned out by Sandler, Stiller, Ferrell, etc. It's almost as if these guys have agents warning them that paid gigs are harder to land as you get older, so they're all cramming in as much as they can. At least Sandler has had the good sense to stagger things a bit, but Will Ferrell needs a good vacation, and even Judd Apatow could use a breather.

I hope Sasha Baron Cohen doesn't succumb to the same pressure. His stuff (and the pseudo-reality angle) is still pretty fresh...

I saw The Strangers and it was awful. Really disappointing, because it could have been great, the jumpy-scary parts were fantastic, and there was a lot of suspense, but the ending was just terrible.

[spoiler82526c2e4a]Liv Tyler asks them why they are doing this before she stabs them, and she says, "because you were home". Sweet reason. Then, these kids come in the house after the killers leave handing out Christian fliers, and as they are looking at Liv Tyler who is unconscious, she grabs his arm, screams, and the movie ends[/spoiler82526c2e4a][/spoiler]

tylerc

The actors were a bunch of no names, with the exception of Liv Tyler, and she's not even someone I would consider to be a 'big' actor. She's not bad, just not a big star yet. The acting wasn't TERRIBLE, it just wasn't great. Like I said, the build up was great, and very tense, I just didn't like the way it ended.

I loved "The Happening". It wasn't a slasher, scary, "OH MY GOD" kind of film.

It was suppose to be a thought provoking film that would make you wonder what our actions as human beings will cause in the end.

[spoilerd8b44c43b5]it was a science fact kind of movie. I say, if you went for brutal scariness then yes, you would be disappointed. But I don't see WHY if that is what you wanted, that you would go to a M.Night movie for that.

To me, M.Night's movies aren't about trying to scare the audience with horrific monsters or grisly gore but to get you to think about what is going on and what it means in terms of human nature. I say, every movie by M.Night touches base with things that aren't so far off from something that could happen IRL. Lady In The Water though was more about human emotions and belief systems more then anything.

But that's just my opinion...

P.S. - IRONMAN was fricking awesome! I'm so glad they FINALLY stopped butchering my favorite comic book chars and stories. But you know why Ironman was so good?

Marvel didn't sign the movie rights over to a studio. The whole movie was done through an independent movie company and the script approved by the comic book writer's themselves. Marvel then sold the movie to a big time company to put it out there on the market. I think Hulk was done the same way but I could be wrong. To me, I never really thought Hulk would make a good movie though. lishrugli

It also makes me wonder if Fox died for nothing. I mean, if Sloan was the one who brought her in, could he have made up the story to make sure that she stayed, knowing her past?

ajasax

@ESMcCready It's not that I don't want NiN to go "mainstream" (it already is). It's that the song is off one of NiN's more "poppy" albums. I've also seen that The Hand that Feeds is on Rock Band; Not to mention Only gets a lot of radio airtime. I hope people dig a little deeper than With Teeth.

ESMcCready

28-06-2008 19:00:32

Well, AJ, NiN isn't as main stream as you think. Trent's albums have never been what the media would call best sellers.

On "The Edge" down here, I hear "Head Like A Hole" and "Closer" more then I do "The Hand that Feeds".

I didn't really think "With Teeth" was a poppy album. Lighter on the riffs and bass but I definitely wouldn't call it poppy. There is also the fact that all the mainstream stars now use more "industrial" like beats and sounds to their music. So its not NiN becoming poppy but more like the mainstream becoming more NiN-ish.

Hey AJ, have you ever heard of Razed In Black? If you like Pretty Hate Machine, I'm pretty sure you'll like RiB.

[spoilerefe2b5d584]To me, I think the reason why they had him kill Cross even though he was saving his life is to show how much Wesley had become a stone cold killer. Before he was heistant to kill even a fly and now, even though this man was saving his life, he's deicated to the kill order.

PLUS, the only reason Wesley was brought in is because Sloan knew that he would be the only person Cross wouldn't kill. What better way to kill the best assassin?

With Fox's death, you DO see the blood splatter on her temple and it also HAD to happen to show Fox's deication to the code. If you remember the story Fox told Wesley, her father was killed and she branded by a man that had an kill order 3 weeks before the event, but the assassin sent to do it couldn't pull the trigger. The way you can tell she is the little girl in the flashbacks is because as she is walking away, you can see a scar on her neck of someone's initals.

In the end, I think the plotline was pretty decent. You actually have to add things up to really figure out what is going on. The writers' weren't going for a super serious movie but more of an "Edgar Wright/Simon Peg" mix of humor, action, and originality.

And I LOVE the way they did visualized tunnel vision. Also, I love how the writers gave the assassins more of a "science fact" reason WHY they were so good.[/spoilerefe2b5d584]

I saw Wall-E last weekend. Fucking amazing CGI. The amount of detail that went into that movie is unbelievable. The entire beginning sequence with just Wall-E was awesome. I also like the ending "lesson."

[spoilera088d7d030]Also, did anyone else notice the blatant connection between Wall-E/Eva and Microsoft/Apple? For example Wall-E is outdated, rusty, and needs constant maintenance. Then, Eva comes in all white, glossy, minimalistic, etc. Oh yeah, Wall-E, ironically plays the Mac bootup sound when he fills up with solar power.[/spoilera088d7d030]

Not really a movie, but if you're interested in the Revolutionary War and formation of this country, John Adams will not let you down.

i work in a wood/machine shop and there is this dude there name Lou and holy crap is this guy vulgar. It's like the f word doesn't have as many uses as this guy finds for it. It's a war movie (or least a war movie setting). War movies, and the military in general, are well known for their language. What did they expect, especially combing war movie language with Ben Stiller's imagery? I'll bet those people would faint at Full Metal Jacket then.

BTW I saw FMJ about 2 weeks before I left for bootcamp, so of course the first half of the movie was fresh on my mind during the whole experience, LOL. I own this move in VHS, DVD, and HD-DVD. anyone ever see "Southland Tales" ? It's got the Rock and Sean William Scott and it's not Walking Tall haha. It also has Jon Lovitz, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Justin Timberlake as well as many others.

I've never heard of it before, but it's actually really good. It reminds me a lot of Donnie Darko or Gummo in that it's kind of artsy in the way it progresses and really makes you think.. I made the mistake of thinking this was a straightforward movie that I could multitask with but this is far from linear. I have to watch it again with my undivided attention because I think there's a lot that could be missed that warrants a second shot.

Check it out, it's pretty sweet.

I think a lot of people would get bored by it but the acting and the cinematography were amazing. I love movies that have really long scenes because not only is it more natural but it also shows off good acting.

Apparently there have been quite a few good movies coming out of Romania over the last few years so I'm gonna check out California Dreamin' and The Death of Mr. Lazarescu too.

Thought Valkyrie was great, but I'm a modern history buff, especially war history. They took a bit of poetic license with a few aspects but overall it was very close to the true story.

We thought For The Holidays was actually pretty good too, but probably not for most of you youngsters. It's an ethnic dysfunctional family flick that makes fun of some cultural stereotypes but has a good message. A bit formulaic but still entertaining. A good date movie I guess, especially if you are Hispanic or associate with Hispanics (particularly Puerto Rican). My Hispanic association is more on the Mexican side, but we still could relate to a lot of the stuff.

Saw the wrestler, slumdog millionaire, and burn after reading. I was quite pleased with all of them.
The Wrestler
Great to see Aronofsky take a step forward after that huge misstep that was The Fountain. The film visually was very different to his previous films. He isn't using the hip hop montage style in this. The shots seem longer, free cam documentary style. It adds to the gritty feel of the film, and it was nice to see him make a movie that was shot differently than requiem for a dream and pi. Micky Rorke nails this role, it's one of those roles that is built for an actor and he is so good it haunts you. No doubt in my mind he will win the oscar for it. Also great supporting roles by Marisa Tomai and Even Rachel Wood. There is definitely some depth to the film, and the characters stick with you long after you're done watching it. Probably not a movie for everyone, but those it's for will love it.

Slumdog Millionaire was also very good, and much more upbeat than The Wrestler. Set in India, the plot revolves around a poor uneducated boy that is about to win Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Naturally they think he has cheated and the story traces back through his life as he explains what lead him up to this point. A great drama/romanace that while I thought kind of fizzled at the end would probably be enjoyed by almost anyone.

Burn After Reading was good,I don't know why so many people thought it was so bad. I thought all the actors gave great performances, and it made for a nice quirky comedy like Adaptation, or Being John Malkovich. I think everyone expected to see a movie similar to No Country For Old Men and instead got one of the Coen's offbeat black comedy's. It's definatly a movie you will either find very funny, or you never laugh once and walk out saying I don't get it. They don't go for a lot of cheap laughs, so it doesn't have as wide an appeal as most comedy's released these days.

really good low budget film, made for under $8000, about two engineers that build a time travel device in their garage. If you liked donnie darko, or any other films that deal with time travel or that sort of thing you'd dig it. If you are an engineer or a scientist, you will really dig it. It was written and made by one, so everything seems pretty true to real life.

I saw Primer a few years ago and thought it was really good.

I also saw Revolutionary Road, Eagle Eye, 1114, Chop Shop, Gran Torino, Frost+Nixon, RockNRolla, Religulous, and Romeo+Juliet. I enjoyed all of them (even Eagle Eye with its major serving of suspension of disbelief) but I think Chop Shop, Revolutionary Road, Frost+Nixon, and Gran Torino were the standouts.

I've decided that the movie analysis in this thread is horrid haha. It's just become a list of movies people watch instead of a discussion about them, or even an opinion more than "it was good," or, "it was not good"

edit ---- FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK I'm such a tard. I wasn't paying attention when I ordered and I accidentally ordered the graphic novel. So now I have this piece of shit comic book that I have no interest in. (

It could have been the pre-teen girl sitting behind me eating pop rocks by the bag full with her mouth open the whole time, but i thought this movie was barely funny and at most points boring.

Having said that I usually enjoy ROCOMs, but this one seemed too long, and really just not that interesting

Saw The Wrestler and it was alright. I was actually let down by all the hype surrounding. Micky Rourke was really good but the movie was just a little uneventful.

There's nothing wrong with movies that lack action or dialogue (see Hunger or 4 luni, 3 saptamāni si 2 zile) but nothing stood out about the movie in the way it was shot or the dialogue to make me think it was amazing.
