Online now icon in profile?

I was just wondering if it would be possible to put an "online now" icon in peoples profiles? I belong to some other forums for work at home moms and things like that, and some of them have one. That way you don't have to search around to see if a person is browsing or whatever. It just lights up online, or offline. It's kind of a kewl feature I think. Any comments?

It's an idea. However, the index page shows those who are online, and wish to be shown as such, and that works pretty well too. ;)

I don't like that, because I hide when I am online

Yeah but it would be much easier to just see if they are on from a post that they made. A lot easier than looking at the index.

Yeah, something like if they were online it would say "online now" if not it would say something like "Last Active Apr 1, 2007 @ 845PM."

Thanks for the feedback. The one site that I used to belong to, where I first saw this, also had the option to choose whether or not you were seen. So if you chose the option to NOT be seen, it just always said OFFLINE in red. If you chose to be seen, then it showed you ONLINE in green. Just real convenient having that under a persons name if you are checking out their offers. Then you know right away if they are available for a quick trade setup, instead of replying to an offer that has just been bumped. or when they aren't even available to set it up. Just my 2 cents. Again

Wolfie, feel free to add this suggestion to the list we're maintaining in the admin forum. I'm pretty sure there's a phpBB mod to do this already, so if you're feeling extra froggy you can search for one and let me know. ;) If it's a painless enough install I'll look at doing it pretty quickly. If I have to write it from scratch, then it'll have to be prioritized with the other stuff.

This mod has been installed. You'll note the online/offline icon below each post, next to where the PM, e-mail, IM, etc. buttons are. It's also shown on the user profile.

[img="e4e71a8de3]http//forum.freeipodguide.com/templates/subSilver/images/lang_english/icon_offline.gif[" alt=""/imge4e71a8de3]

I lithinkli this respects a person's hidden settings, but it's hard to tell for certain since I'm an admin and my privileges override those settings anyway (you can't hide from me!). I tried a dummy user account with the hidden flag enabled, and it could still see that it was online, but could not see that another account was online when it actually was. I could scrutinize the source code to be sure it's working like that, but I'm tired and off to bed in a bit. If I find that it unhides folks, then I'll fix it later.

I believe that mod was around back when I was toying with phpBB, so it shouldn't be difficult to find. As long as there is an option to not receive IM's, it'd probably be a good idea for those who don't spend much time on AIM/YIM/MSN/etc.

thx Ive been using meebo for a little while now. Its basically a web app that wokrs with all the major im services. Its advantage is you odnt have to download any software to IM.

Id rather stay off aim for my own persoanl reasons and feel a pop up IM window would be real helpful. plus if you already know the mod it should be that much easier. + karma

Last Login has also been added. You can view it on the user's profile page, unless they've set themselves to invisible.

Don't pay much attention to the time displayed, as it probably isn't meaningful to you, for several technical reasons. I may just drop the time altogether, as date is the most important anyway and will be accurate enough, within a day.

[b4bdae657f4]EDIT[/b4bdae657f4] I went ahead and struck time from the Last Visit display. Now it appears in the same date format as Join date.

The chat thing might be a little much, I've known other phpBB boards that tried it and dropped it. It can add a lot of load to the server, impacting forum performance. And most people will expect the conversations to be logged somewhere, and be retrievable, which could be a nightmare.

So I'm hesitant to do that one, unless the demand is high and Tyler okays it.

All I can get from the database is the date the session was created. Admin mentioned a 7200 second session timeout, which is 2 hours, but I've seen the occasional session get stuck and hang around for much longer. If you login and have an existing session still in the system, it won't register you as logging in again. Maybe that is what is happening sometimes.
