March 27, 2007 — Microsoft Corp. today announced the upcoming availability of Xbox 360™ Elite, a new model of the video game and entertainment system that will include a 120GB hard drive, a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) port, a high-definition cable, and a premium black finish for the console, wireless controller and Xbox LIVE® headset. Xbox 360 Elite has enough space for a library of Xbox LIVE Arcade games and thousands of songs, as well as downloadable high-definition TV shows and movies available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace. The new 120GB hard drive also will be sold as a stand-alone accessory to give current Xbox 360 owners greater choice and flexibility in their games and entertainment experience. Additional Xbox 360 Elite accessories, such as the black Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, Xbox 360 Play & Charge kit and the Xbox 360 rechargeable battery, will be available separately. The Xbox 360 Elite and its accessories are expected to begin arriving in U.S. stores on April 29.

“Today’s games and entertainment enthusiast has an insatiable appetite for digital high-definition content,” said Peter Moore, corporate vice president for the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. “Xbox 360 Elite’s larger hard drive and premium accessories will allow our community to enjoy all that the next generation of entertainment has to offer.”

Distinguished by its black finish and signature metallic detailing, Xbox 360 Elite will have an estimated retail price1 of $479.99 (U.S.) and will come packed with components and accessories for the ultimate high-definition entertainment experience

bastards.. really sucks. W/e im sticking with my xbox360 premium. My tv only supports up to 1080i so no use. And I dont see the need to dl much crap on it anyways so no use of the extra space. But really messed up at least the HDMI should of been put on the xbox360 premium edition.

I think its funny that for so long, MS bashed Sony for including so much 'useless' stuff in the PS3, such as BR, a large hard drive, HDMI, etc to jack up the price...

Then they turn around, screw users already owning the Premium model by making the new HD cost a whopping amount to get it by itself, and include a larger HD and HDMI, and STILL no HD DVD player included, and at a price close to Sony's 20 GB PS3. MS is a bunch of hypocrits...

Look for the 360 Super Uber N00b Pwner, coming soon, with built in HD DVD player, 150 GB HD, HDMI and all the other goodies for $600.

Even if I had to buy a new 360 today, I would stick with the core/premium. For 1, who needs 120gb and also, I like white more. It's cool, but I don't want it |

HDMI? Is it that much better then just regular hd cables?

If you want to output 1080p or display HD-DVD or Blu-Ray at max resolution, then yes. Analog connections can't do 1080p, and in many cases HDMI does look superior to analog. Plus it carries audio as well, which is convenient for some folks. Not sure if the external 360 HD-DVD drive will enforce HDCP restrictions or not, but I imagine they'll have to in order to retain the format licensing, which means HDMI will be required to take advantage of max quality.

yeah this is retarded. I understand that they are trying to steal some of the market from the ps3 but it is silly. i have had mine for a year and 2 months and already they have made a better console? this happens for pcs but shouldnt happen for consoles.
i dont need the extra stuff anyway, but it still is silly

The only reason I'm excitted about it is because I will most likely get it from a free site or using money for a free site and that will certainly still be less than buying a Core system right now and I'll get more for regular retail price....

I have a two year warranty on my 360 from bestbuy...I'll probably end up exchanging it for this one and pay the diference if it's only like $100 difference or so.

On the XBOX 360, you can output 1080p via VGA (which is an analog signal) as long as your TV set supports it... The real question is, how VGA users will be affected when HDCP kicks in.

Ah, that's true, I was focused on his reference to the "standard HD cables" which I assumed to mean component. Plus, fewer and fewer TV's nowadays come with a VGA port, and many that do don't support 1080p over it. In fact my high-end SXRD doesn't support 1080p over VGA IIRC. I believe it maxes out at 1024x768, at least without some non-supported timing tweaks.

As far as HDCP, while I've heard of HDCP compliant VGA connections, I've not heard of them on any production TV's or players, and given the foothold that HDMI has now, I don't forsee it going very far. The studios are pushing very hard to get adapters and players off the market that attempt to provide HDCP compliance over analog connections. Time will tell, I guess.

As soon as I read that, I doubted it entirely. ) It just didn't read as anything more than a confused or misinformed rep trying to mollify a customer. Then I read the comments, which tended to agree with my assessment and pointed to this comment on a blog by a MS employee

http//ozymandias.com/archive/2007/03/28/Elite-Xbox-360-SKU-Announced.aspx#2

Component to HDMI adapters already exist, but they don't improve picture quality (in fact, they generally worsen it due to the extra A/D conversion). More importantly, none support HDCP and I am reasonably certain (as in 99.99%) that there is no way Microsoft would/could pass HDCP from a component output.

So that type of adapter would only make sense for someone who has a TV/HT with no available component inputs but available HDMI inputs, but it still wouldn't allow them to watch HD-DVD content in full glory.
