Hey, I need a new anti virus, spyware, firewall for my Vista cause McAfee trial is only 30 days. What do you guys suggest for low memory use, ease of use, and ability? Price doesn't matter.

well yeah, you are too 1337, no viruses can touch you.

AVG Free. Better than anything Symantec and McAfee make, IMO. The free version uses the same AV engine as the paid Pro version, you just don't get as much scheduling and tweaking options. Been using it for years, and always use it "fix" client PC's that are crippled by NortonAV. It makes almost no noticeable impact on system performance, and updates daily.

I've had 1 virus in the past 8 years and it was my own damn fault trying to get some crack on a website I knew I shouldn't be at.

I'll take my chances and avoid having the slow PC. I back-up my files often and reformat at least once a year anyway.

I use AVG as well. It works pretty damn good.

If you want to buy something Kaspersky and BitDefender work great...

Yeah, if I were paying for something, it would probably be Kaspersky or NOD32, but I'm tellin' ya, AVG Free works well enough. I've liNEVERli had an infection in the years I've used it. And I've had several attempts that the real-time scanner caught, but nothing that got through.

Stuey, properly designed and tuned AV programs will not significantly impact PC performance. If you stay away from the dogs like Symantec and McAfee and use one of the aforementioned quality products, you can have protection without sacrificing performance. And I used to feel the same as you and ran unprotected for years. But believe me, unless you live in a computer vacuum, eventually something will come via e-mail, web download, P2P, or something that will be carrying a payload.

Put it this way with AVG, even when games and other stuff tell you to disable your resident AV protection, I never do. And I never have a problem. It's that low-impact.

i have used AVG for several years, only had a couple of virus' and most were my fault.

I have used NOD32 for a while, and realised that it's not AS good as AVG.

NOD32 couldnt catch some of the virus' AVG cought, and AVG is free!!

Thanks, ya I used AVG for the longest time but I thought that they had become subscription only, apparently that was just there free Anti-Spyware program.

the best thing to use is your head...

don't do anything stupid on your computer like use p2p software(only use torrents)

use firefox, and don't go on any stupid sites

if you do those 2 things, how in hell will you get a virus or spyware?

exploits in programs you use. And a lot of people like to download stuff. Anti virus is recommended. I use norton but I know there is better but it works for me. I also use zone alarm but im uninstalling that soon since its more annoying then helpful most of the time.

most programs that have exploits are usually pirated copies of virus protectors, or 3rd party programs...

and if someone is afraid to get a virus in an email... just do not download or save any files from emails

most people use browser, chat clients, mail system, and a media player
(firefox, windows mail, aim, live msgr, winamp/divx/quicktime/itunes, photoshop, nero, winrar and torrent dlr) those would be the basic things a person would need.. now I do not know how someone could get a virus from using those unless they are very stupid or whatnot... just don't use any untested, third party software that you never heard of before

Torrents have been used to distribute viruses.

Oh, definitely. I've seen way too many torrents contain virii/trojans/spyware, especially those from public trackers. BitTorrent IS a P2P protocol by the way, and any P2P protocol is subject to virii. Hell, for that matter, so is FTP, NNTP, HTTP, IM, or any other file transfer mechanism. Nothing inherent to a protocol has any bearing over whether a file you download contains malware.

it is more likely to get a virus from limewire/kazaa than from a torrent, but it does depend on what you are download... once again... just use your head... read the comments on the torrent, look at the files that are in the torrent before you download them

dmorris converted me awhile back too. I have AVG and Ad-Aware and a couple of other lesser used apps, but those two seem to catch it all.
