Hi fipg. I need your input. Please tell me how much you would pay for the following. Im starting a business and it has to do with computers and electronics. I will mostly build and repair parts for it. I need to know some of the laws of running a business like this and some regulations. Thanks!

These are for labor fees, not the parts. Thanks!

Building You a New Computer (labor fee)
Replacing failed parts
Installing new components (optical or hdd)
Installing new RAM
New power supply

Anything else you can think of! Thank you guys soooooo much!

How old are you? Where is your location? What are your certifications? Where are you getting your parts?

All of the above factor in. If your 19 in a house, you can't charge the same rates as CompUSA or BestBuy =/

Start with lower rates in the beginning until you establish a business identity in your area.

I've done this already.

How much would [b016c7d8558]I[/b016c7d8558] pay for that? Nothing, I'd do it myself.

That's like asking how much I would pay someone to wipe my ass if I didn't know how...

How would I know...? shrug

What you charge depends entirely on your local market. If there is competition around that does this, find out what they charge and beat them by $5. If nobody in your area does it, you can probably charge a little more, but ONLY if you can establish a reputation. So you'd be advised to do a lot of promo work to build up your rep and establish a customer base.

I've been charging $65/hr for years, but it's not full-time for me and I only take on business client typically. A co-worker does home repairs and typically charges $40/hr I think. We both charge 1 hour minimum, so a job like virus cleaning or installing a drive will typically just get a 1 hour fee + parts. Sometimes I'll mark up parts a bit, but it depends on the customer I'm doing it for.

Most computer shops charge an upwards of $90/hr.

I charge closer to $200/hour because i don't get hired often no matter what price I work at
for design, not pc repair

Yeah, I know what they usually charge, I guess I'm more surprised that moneybags finds the time to do that stuff...

Moneybags. Right.

Anyway, I don't have a lot of time to do that stuff anymore, nor do I really like it. I've been building/repairing PC's for 20 years, and the "interest" factor of dealing with the same type of hardware for so long wore off with me a long time ago. I really prefer the coding side of things to the hardware side. Now I just do it mostly for myself for the obvious benefits, and for some select clients that I've helped out for years. I try not to take on new clients, but refer them to my friends instead.

My established client list is really the reason I haven't raised my rate from $65/hr. I've been charging that for at least 10 years now, and haven't gone up. ) If I were to start doing it seriously again on any sort of near-full-time basis, I'd definitely increase to the near $100 range. I can get $120+/hr for coding when I get an itch to do side work, so I'm not really interested in pursuing the hardware angle anymore. ;)
