Well, it didn't just happen, but it happened around 10pm EST.

http//www.wgal.com/news/11222161/detail.html[]http//www.wgal.com/news/11222161/detail.html

I'm Ok, as is my family, but this was one fucked up night. The house is probably about 40 feet or so from the back of our house, directly behind us.

I got a call at work just after 10pm from my wife who was hysterical, I couldn't understand a word she was saying for about a minute. I had someone take me home from work and all the streets were blocked off, the cops wouldn't let me through, the neighbourhood was out of power, people were screaming, crying, shouting, it was crazy. There's parts of the house that blew up, in our garden and on our porch.

When I got into the house, we had about 15 minutes and then they evacuated everyone so we managed to get two of our three cats and the laptop and leave. We parked round the corner at a mini-mart where some of the fire engines were and they wouldn't let us any closer. The Red Cross were there and were giving people shelter in a nearby school.

One of our family friends (an elderly woman in her 70's was in the house next to it. The house that was joined to the house that blew up was pretty much gone too. They're both just rubble now. The old lady is Ok, as is the woman and child who was in the house next to the one that blew.

My wife said she saw a bright white light, then everything in the house listed up off the ground and then back down, windows were shattered, glass was everywhere, our neighbour had her window frame blown off and into our yard. Our other neighbour smelled gas in their house and left.

We're in a Holiday Inn at the moment with my sister-in-law an niece and my mother-in-law as back at the house. Apparently we've been given the all clear to move back in but the gas company is still checking houses and we still have no power.

When I get home I'll take some pics, but without power I won't be able to upload them.

My wife can't hear out of one ear, they're tearing up the roads and pavements, my mother-in-law almost did herself in crying, hyperventilating, running around, worrying. My wife says she can't get the screams out of her head and I know she's going to have nightmares about this for a long long time. (

It was really scary going back into the house that was pitch black with firemen shouting and telling us to evacuate, and trying to get the cats that wouldn't cooperate at all, thinking the house could explode any second or that I may never see my wife again. cry

It's seriously made me think about how fortunate I am to have what I have, and if you don't already know yourself, take a moment to think about it. ?

Given the news article (TSJ, correct me if I am wrong), he lives in York, PA.

I know the area, because I am originally from PA myself, near Pittsburgh. I used to go to Philly quite often, and York is pretty much on the way.

Damn it's been a crazy 8-9 hours or so since my post.

I'm gonna be on the news, my wife's gonna be in the paper, I rescued a cat from the rubble of a house on live TV and I still haven't slept yet.

My wife still doesn't have hearing in one ear, the cat that I couldn't get last night was our cat and she hid under the bed, so we left her here at the house and the cat that I rescued belonged to the woman whose house was just demolished.

I'll post pics in a bit.

As tragic as this story is (and I do sympathize), your usage of that emoticon is really quite funny.

Nevertheless, this sucks a lot man. Tell your wife I send my condolences (add as much sexual innuendo to this comment as is appropriate). Good to hear everyone is ok, and that you kept your cool under the pressure.

bball, I didn't take offense. I can't stand this shithole but have no choice. I can leave and move back home to Scotland, but then I'd have to leave my wife since her health wouldn't permit her to fly or travel that far.

The house isn't mine so I have no say in whether it gets sold or not, so I have no choice in the regard.

Thanks for the kind words guys, I appreciate it. My wife's hearing has come back but now there's just a ringing in her ear so that's good I guess.

At just after 10pm, there was an explosion that lifted our house up (or at least everything in it) and dropped it all, then it all went black. My wife called 911 but they couldn't understand her through the screaming but they got someone out. The old lady (our good family friend) who was sleeping (in the first pic, second floor with the white window frame to the left of the door) on the second floor with her two cats was thrown down into the basement. A neighbour whose windows were shattered went running into the house, found her in the basement, told her he was going to save her and stayed with her until the fire department came. He put a jacket round her to keep her warm and then when they arrived, they had to make a chain and pass her from person to person.

The house to the left had a woman and small child in and they got out Ok. The old lady had two cats that had no chance at all. This morning, I got to go into the house to try to get some of her stuff before they tore it down. The entire left side of the house was in her living room and then we kept telling the people in charge that they were to keep an eye out for two cats and give them to us if they found them. So a few hours later the guy pulls up with the digger and starts tearing her house down and he's going through the house just destroying the whole thing with what seems like to us, no regard for the cats.

Then all of a sudden he shouts CAT! and stops and everyone starts cheering and clapping (the old lady (Norma) lost her husband 2 years ago, her mum 6 months ago and all she had was her cats so they meant everything to her (even more so since she was losing her house too)) so I run round to the front of the house since the cat headed in that direction. They wouldn't let us go very close but then the cat jumped out of nowhere to the front door, so we all started trying to coax it to come out but he just ran back in because we were scaring him. Then the guy got back into the digger and started poking at the house to see if the cat would come out so I ran forward after he stopped again and jumped up onto her porch and tried to find him but they wouldn't let me go into the house. They told me to get down which I did and stood back and then the cat appeared in the doorway again. One of the workers went forward and tried to get him and then guy the in charge said "Where's that other guy?" and someone behind him said "He's in front of you" and I put my hand up to show him where I was and he said "Yeah you, go ahead and try to get him, but don't go in". I ran up to the porch and the cat was wedged inbetween planks of wood and bricks and he saw me and tried to run away Then he stopped, I held out my hand and he came towards me and then I pulled him out and held him over my shoulder and then everyone was cheering and the TV crews were running around taping me. So I handed the cat to Norma's daughter and got down.

The other cat was so small there was no way she could've survived everything so I just walked around to the back of the house to speak to ym wife and get something to drink. After that I just stayed in the house but everyone else was out front trying to find the other cat.

About an hour later, I hear everyone shouting that they got the other cat, so I went downstairs and the other cat had come running out of the front of the house and they grabbed her. She's bleeding on the foot but she'll be Ok.

The fact that Norma, and her two cats survived this when it ripped through the room they were sleeping in, is a fucking miracle. I honestly do not see how they survived. I just don't.

I think I now believe in God.

I watched the news but they didn't show me, only her daughter carrying the cat round the corner, which really sucks because I wanted to know how my mullet looked in the sun. (

Wow, TSJ. There's a lot going on with you from just reading the posts. It's good that you are in a good condition and I hope your wife gets her hearing all the way back.

I kind of feel sad for Norma, she loses most her belongings and at age 73 those belongings are bound to be her memories from her past. You got her cat though.

If your mother-in-law owns the house, this should be her clue to sell it and move to a safer place. Like I said, if you move south in PA you can find some places in the boons (Pocono area) that are really cheap and in nice areas. I mean you may have to fight off some deers and rednecks, but at least you won't be dodging bullets.

I used to live there and my mom rents a 3 story row home with a full basement and all that jazz for $600 a month. My fiancees parents own a decent three story half-a-double and the other half of it just sold for like 60k.

I live in a one bedroom, tiny apartment in Philly and pay fucking $895 a month for it. It's definitely an affordable area. It's just in the middle of no where.

You may have noticed my knickers hanging out and it was because the legs of my jeans were underneath my feet, which is why I was struggling to get up because I couldn't lift my leg up.

Either way I'm still a fat fuck.

Explosion destroys four row homes and a business in York
March 11, 2007

YORK — Most people think it was gas that caused the disaster, but so far, no gas leak has been found.
Minutes after the clock struck ten Saturday, an unexpected blast obliterated four York row homes and one business on West College Avenue. "It was horrendous and being that close to it I had no idea what happened, whether a bomb went off or what," said Terry Snelbaker.
Five people inside the buildings were rushed to the hospital with only minor injuries, leaving many questioning what happened.
"The one thing we were able to rule out was any leakage of gas along our mainstream," said Leslie Orbin, Columbia Gas.
At first glance it looked like the home collapsed, but authorities said windows blown out more than 100 feet away prove it was an explosion.
Lynne Schrum can't believe her mother, 72-year-old Norma Stout, is alive after the explosion dropped her mother two stories.
"She was actually in bed on the second floor and we were told by firefighters that she was found in the basement," said Lynne Schrum.
Lynne and her family searched for belongings including their pet cat, thought to be dead. But there was a reason to smile.
"They got a cat," said Schrum as she pulled the cat out.
There was a glimmer of hope in the midst of tragedy.
Columbia Gas crews will be back on the scene on Monday to continue to try and find the cause.
Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania responded to the house explosion in a press release.
Company spokesman Matt Pitzarella said, "At this time Columbia Gas can confirm that there are no leaking natural gas pipelines or facilities in the immediate area," and that, "customers can rest assured, knowing that the area is and will continue to remain safe."

We've had investigators from both Columbia Gas and the police department here today.

We've also discovered cracks throughout our house in the walls, under windows, the stairs down to the basement have come apart from the wall, the kitchen counter has also come away from the wall.

We're calling the insurance company tomorrow.

I'm glad someone posted here again. I knew there was something I was supposed to be looking for once I was able to log back in and this was it.

I also saw the news the other night, and the first thing I thought once they said "York" was whether TSJ and family were ok or not. I had no net access at the time, and only was able to get back on today, but I really worried about you and some of our other "Yorkies" and whether you were involved.

I feel like an ass for letting this slip my mind until now, and not making it my first post back.

I'm really glad you're OK. )

As horrible as this event was, it reminds me that humanity is not dead, and that decent people are everywhere. Bless the man that stayed with the elderly woman, bless you for going after her cat, and bless everyone else that has come together in the crisis.

That is truly one exceptional group of neighbors right there.

And I'm glad you and your wife are safe (as well as all the kitties), Frank.

I hope you get a nice check, and hopefully you will be able to move out, those cracks do not look friendly. The last two of the bunch cause me the most concern, and I hope you can get everything squared away. God will reward you for saving that cat, and I hope he allows the best to happen to you and your family.

So now, apparently, it's assumed that the Landlord had his own little Meth Lab going on and that's what caused the explosion.

Another theory (since still nobody knows why it happened) is that the Landlord was stealing gas. shrug

Last year some guy that had a meth lab started a fire about 10 min from my house. That was a pretty bad fire and a bunch of people died because it was in an apartment complex.

Where are these "assumptions" comming from?
