This was the most intresting physics problem on a recent assignment and i was wondering if anyone else in the forums could answer it...

In the Daytona 500 race, a Ford Thunderbird and a Mercedes Benz are moving side by side down a straight - away at 71.5m/s The driver of the Thunderbird realizes that she must make a pit stop and she smoothly slows to a stop over a distancee of 250m. She spends 5 seconds in the pit and then accelerates out, reaching her previous speed of 71.5m/s after a distance of 350m. At this point, how far has the Thunderbird fallen behind the Mercedes Benz, which has been moving at a constant speed all along?

<insert omg he's asking for homework help kill him posts here>

I think we're learning that in physics now...but if you think I know what the hell we're doing, I havn't got a clue. My teacher expects us to know it...therefore, he doesn't teach us the material. Whatever. Everyone fails his tests, but we still get As and Bs in the class.

A. I actually already solved this problem

B. I have the teachers solution manual so I know my answer is right

I wanted to see WHO ELSE could solve it

I gave it a try

I also came up with 957.48 meters behind. Significant figures have never been my specialty. Round accordingly.

got the same. fairly simple problem really.

Ugh, kinematic equations. Thank god our quizzes come with a few reference equations so that we don't need to memerize them.

Yup Zdub is right. (giving him the credit since he showed his work)

Wow. I took physics and my teacher was crazy and didn't use a book he tough everything from his own head. He was nuts!

That would be like the most simple problem ever and I would love to have that on a test.

It's all based off a simple formula (which i still have somewhere) and it wouldn't even be that hard to plug into.

I'm not gonna do it though cuz i'm too lazy to find what the formula is.

i'll do it for a green

How is this physics? http//forum.freeipodguide.com/smilies_mod/upload/0d591e5c594eb5cf76257b921406e62e.gif[" alt=""/img0f0835277b]
I've never taken a physics class, but I thought it had more to do with how objects interact with each other. It seems more like an algebra problem shrug

Edit Btw, the Mercedes would smoke the Ford anyways wink

Not if the Ford was racing in the Daytona 500...

Yeah its more matematical but it would be more like a physics problem if you calculated forces into it such as friction.

I remembering doing problems like this in my high school physics class and algebra 2 class. Its pretty basic stuff but good job to those who got it.

and American made cars suck

This is the part of physics known as kinematics...

My physics class in college was a lot like these problems and other similar ones. A lot harder though. It is a lot of formulas and then theories that make since to back them up. It was interesting but at times boring and it got confusing especially if you didn't keep up with the work.

I'm taking physics right now, and it is by far the hardest math/science class I have ever taken. It really makes you think, and I realized how much of my other classes is just memorization.

hmm.. i never took physics... only chemistry and biology
