A lot of my friends take adderall which is used to control ADHD. I have a huge midterm tomorrow and am wondering if I should take some to help me stay awake and study for this. It helps people stay awake, but I don't want it to affect me differently. Anybody have any advice?

Don't do that to yourself. There is a reason for people with ADHD to take it. You don't have ADHD, so do not take it. I heard of a lot of bad things happen to people who took it. Maybe if you do it once, nothing will happen, but just don't take it. It's not really good for you.

If you don't have ADHD, it will counter affect you and make you feel like you do. You won't be able to study at all

Because Adderall uses amphetamine stimulants to help the user concentrate for extended periods of time, many students today request Adderall from doctors in order to use it as a study aid. Thus, it is increasingly popular on college campuses. The largest benefit to students, however, is Adderall's ability to give students the power to focus on and learn what would usually be uninteresting material. Because of the appetite-suppressing properties of amphetamines, it is also sought after by those wishing to lose weight. Another less common use for students is to take Adderall before or during a night of heavy drinking in order to remain alert and active despite being intoxicated.

Research done by the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) shows the more competitive the college, the higher the incidence of stimulant use. An article published stated the findings of a nationwide survey of thousands of college students[3]. The findings of this past April 2006 survey shows 5.9% use rates among the more competitive campuses, compared to 1.3% use rates among less competitive campuses. Breaking down the use pattern even further, this same sample done by NIDA reveals whites were more likely to use stimulants compared to African Americans and Asians, at rates of 4.9%, 1.6%, and 1.3% respectively. Further, students with lower grade point averages of B’s or below use stimulants at a rate of 5.2%, compared to students earning B+ or above who use this medication at rates of only 3.3%. This research also specifically identified that students involved in sororities or fraternities use stimulants at a much higher rate of 8.6% compared to nonmembers who reported use at rates of only 3.3% (Whitten, 6).

Another major concern about the use of Adderall among college students is the psychological dependence that may cause students to lose faith in their own ability to perform well and the dependence on the advantageous effects of stimulant medication. Jackie Kurta, an Alcohol and Drug Specialist at UC Santa Barbara’s Student Heath Services states, “Students start out taking study drugs one time to study. The drugs work so well that the students begin to lose confidence in their own abilities to study without them,” (Hirschey).

The black market price of Adderall varies widely. Prices frequently range between $3 to $10 a pill. With pills ranging from 5 to 35 mg. However pills may sell for as little as $.20 or as much as $25.

Aside from being used by college students as a study aide, Adderall has been used as an off label drug for weight loss. Adderall’s side effect of weight loss and appetite suppression is a desired result for those trying to lose weight. It is administered as part of a “cocktail” of other off label prescription drugs that have side effects used to treat obesity. There have not been any scientific studies performed to evaluate the effectiveness of this form of treatment and is viewed a very risky and potentially dangerous way to shed pounds. (http//www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15385195/)

Adderall is meant for use by people with ADHD, ADD and has some other uses, but it can also be used as a low grade speed. This being said, it can be abused easily. it is a "safe" speed to some, because of the metabolised salts that help it kick in and plateu and then come down easy. It is illegle to abuse perscription drugs, and is also unwise, many claim to use it all day by finding their regular dose, and slowly mixjng into their water, food, and other methods. 10mg tabs can be split into .4mg bits that can be used every hour. While this is uncommon as of date, this is becoming popular among patients, whom tend to ask for morning and evenig doses, due to high metablolism, which whould cause the effects to not last as long.

Exactly. Don't abuse prescription drugs... Especially if they aren't yours.

The bottom line is that you have to ask yourself if a good grade is worth resorting to drugs. Set your priorities, and do what you will based on those.

Personally, my personal health comes before school. I don't do homework until I've eaten and worked out, and I don't study if it's late and I should be sleeping. In the end, I'm willing to give up a portion of my GPA if it means feeling good.

i personally am against experimenting with pills....

but why anyone would experiement with pills the night before an examl is waaaaaay beyond any comprehension....

Well.....

First of all, DON'T SPLIT THE PILLS (somebody pasted an article talking about splitting the pills). Most of the pills now are XR (aka Time Release). Opening/Splitting/Crushing the pills can alter the time release effect and will most likely cause adverse effects.

You don't have too much to worry about, but 1 out of a 100 people may have an adverse reaction to it, which is precisely why you should get a doctor to prescribe it to you.

You won't be hungry, and you won't be tired.

Dont SPLIT TIME RELEASE XR's!!!!!

Basically neutralizes all effects of the pill and just wont work the same

I am proscribed to 30mg XR and dont take it every day though as after a week straight the effects wear off and my body builds up resistance.

it is not a good idea to take a controled substance for which you have no prescription for any reason.

If this is the first time you've taken adderall, I wouldn't suggest doing it before a big test.

Instead, use it recreationally one afternoon and see if you like it.

Is it time release (XR) or regular? Color/size/shape of pill?

Don't take more than 20mg your first time doing it. It's not that you at a risk of OD'ing or anything (i've seen people BLOW 120+mg and walk away okay), its just that you should get a taste for it and see how your body reacts (everyone's different).

Oh yea, one more thing. It makes your cock shrink terribly. lol

Drug laws are B.S. anyways. But still, prescription medications aren't the safest for you. I'm sure there are other safer alternatives.
