and I am buying a new phone. Can I buy a verizon phone on Amazon for the discounted price (that requires you to sign up for verizon) even though I'm only renewing the contract?

Good question but I'm not sure...

Just go month to month and then switch to Cingular when the iPhone comes out.
But to answer your question, I think you can only buy phones from the Verizon store or verizonwireless.com.
If its only for new subscribers, then you probably can't... Maybe if you cancel your current contract and re-sign up, but I'm not sure.. Cell phones aren't my thing (I hate them even though I have one, I rarely use them.)

Speaking of the iPhone, I went to the Apple store last thursday to get my macbook checked out, and the guy at the genius bar said he had heard rumors that Cingular was considering giving 18 months of free service if you buy the iPhone directly from the Apple store. That sounds incredibly farfetched. Has anyone else heard anything like this?

It is what it exactly is..... Just a rumor. No telecommunication company (regardless who they are) are going to offer something like that. Especially Ma Bell.

If you are signing a new contract they will price match any other carrier or you can go lower. When we renewed with sprint i got a PPC 6700 for 300 and my brother got a treo 700 when it came out for 250 with free evdov service and text messaging so low ball them and threaten to leave them. How long you had the phone?

I've had my current phone for about 1 1/2 years, but I am definitely going to get a new one once my agreement comes up (in about a week). I'm looking at getting the enV.

Engadget Mobile put this rumor out and it was debunked within 24 hours by a Cingular/AT&T rep.

Hmm, this is an interesting question. Anything hot and new coming out with VZW soon?

I'd also like to know this. Also, the enV was 150 a few days ago, but I recently checked on Verizon's site and it's now 200. Is there anyway to know when they're changing the prices?

yes but in order for you to renew the contract it must be from verizon if you get a new phone from amazon they will sign up like a new customer which will mean a new account, and new telephone number

not true...read up on shit before you say stuff.
Here's what you should do
Renew your contract with verizon, and see if you can get a free phone with a contract renewal. Get a crap phone. Activate this phone.
Buy the discounted phone on amazon.
When you get the amazon phone, go to verizon wireless website...where you have to log on. you may need to set up an account.
There's a section here where you can activate ANY verizon-compatable phone....FOR FREEEEEEEEEE! (sorry).
You type in the hex ESN (or something like that) of the old phone and the new phone. Your new phone test rings, and you're in business!
You can also call Verizon and a customer service person will do it for free. You pay to do this in the store.
And now, you have a cheap backup phone. If you go camping or some shit, do this same process to switch the phones over so you break a crap phone, and not a nice phone.

ehhhh just reread your post.
Yes, you can do this. I've done the same thing. It may take some phone calls, and a "threat" to walk away from verizon. But you can get a discounted phone from amazon in this way...you will keep your number unless the deal specifically says no.

right, even though the law was supposed to be for transferring between companies, it certainly applies to this.
