Yeah, his forum software on internets 3 and 5 have clogged connections to the even-numbered webnets.

Someone should start a thread or 5 in the help section about this.

LOL. It isn't the "forum software" that's the problem -- which BTW is kept updated to the latest version, courtesy of yours truly.

The problem is the number of members vs host capacity, a problem not easily solved without cash. Hence the ads?

Dude idk, the forum style hasn't changed once since I've been here. And since people have to pay for Invision, I thought it might have to be the same with phpBB, but apparently not. And I only said software because you have to download w/e files you need to host it on a server.

phpBB is open-source, unlike Invision and its ilk, and the theme doesn't change with an update. The themes are separate, and this one is a pretty highly customized version of the standard subSilver theme.

And of course phpBB is software -- nobody is arguing that. I was merely responding to your suggestion that the forum software might be responsible for the errors, and it isn't.

Why can't you just throw banner adds at the top, bottom and stuff?? yeah it looks crappy to see ads all the time (i'm sure adblockplus would deal w/ most of em), but it sure is better than not being able to hit the forum at all when you want to.

The box was either under some serious load for awhile, or our host has throttled us back. I was running a database backup that normally takes about 10 minutes to run and doesn't impact the server enough to notice. This one ran for over an hour, and I don't know if it's what killed the forums, or if it was just another victim.

Obviously this forum has reached a point of growth where it needs another server.

I've suggested it before, and I know it's in the works, but FIG needs to move hosts/servers/whatever needs changing fast, because it will only get worse. It would be nice for FIG to reap the benefits of lots of new members, rather than the pitfalls of them.

Advertise his own stuff? How could it be more "his own" than an offer that he gets paid for sign-ups from? If you aren't privy to all the details, you look really stupid when you criticize someone like that. Seriously, nobody is making you click anything, and it's not hurting you any more than the regular error message.

Just chill out. This huge influx of new people is resulting in tons more resource usage, and probably a fairly costly hosting upgrade. It seems like people would be happy that he's finding ways to pay the bills. ?
