I don't get why people complain about AF/Hco/AE being pricey when there's clearly millions of older people spending way more for designer labels like D&G, Juicy, etc...

AF's not really pricey when you compare their quality to Hollister's (they own Hollister and Ruehl btw, and Ruehl is just AF + $10). I picked up a few of their winter jackets on clearance for $40 a piece (they used to be about $300-400 before clearance).

I agree 100%.

They are paying for a logo basically. [u419660fa0c]No one can argue that they are paying $350 for a pair of jeans strictly for quality.[/u419660fa0c] It is the name they are primarily paying for.

But honestly I have come to the conclusion that there are worse things than spending/wasting (whichever you decide to call it) money on clothes. I have had this dicussion way too many times in the past with my fiance. It doesnt make you a bad person.

============

a lot of people spending $20 on a pair of socks are young. I think with time comes a different mindset and your priorities change. When your paycheck goes to rent/tuition/etc, you like to save as much money as possible for your life/future and saving $19 makes a huge difference. I personally would rather have walmart socks and extra money in the bank than wear polo socks. Some of these kids still live with their parents and their paycheck is 100% disposable income. They arent thinking to save for diapers and tuition for their future children and for when your car breaks down. There isnt anything wrong with this, they are young and while it would be nice for youth as a whole to see more value in money, sometimes it just doesnt happen.

But even rich people who can spend $20 on socks sometimes still wont because they do not see the value in that. I remember there was a fake rolex thread and someone (i think h3x) said that even if they were a millionair they would still buy the replica because they couldnt justify spending 30,000 on a watch, [b419660fa0c]even if he had millions[/b419660fa0c]. I think money should be respected and, while i disagree with counterfeir merchandise, i thought it was awesome to hear that.

Yeah, I was the one who said that... and I still stand by those words. In my opinion, spending money on a pair of jeans for more than what they are actually worth is silly and I think the person who's blowing the $300 on the pair is just trying to fit into a certain category of individuals for that purpose alone.

I buy hemp whenever I can (it does cost more than the clothes you might find at Wal-Mart) but at least with hemp, you're paying for the quality...

After all, it is the strongest natural fiber in the world.

Well, her little dog sleeps on my head and sheds on my pillow and kicks her paws in my face at night ?

So I guess i;ve been lonely. ( Plus I'm in Ohio and we have been getting hit with the bad weather now, so I am less motivated to go out with friends.

I cant explain what this type of gray, snowy weather does. If you lived in Arizona your whole life you wouldnt even understand. I swear it depresses you. I look liek a skeleton.

Oh yeah, and i'm taking a semester off to help my brother get his life together. so not being in school sucks actually. especially in the winter when school forced me to get out.

I've said many a time on here that I buy clothes from the Salvation Army.

1.) A year ago we were (figuratively speaking) destitute so we had no choice
2.) You know that whatever you buy from there the money is gong to a good cause
3.) It's just fucking clothes. Last time I was back in Scotland (just over two years ago), I got myself a black, velvety blazer like the ones that are fashionable now, for around $7 from The British Heart Foundation (charity shop). The same blazer can now be bought from various different places all over the world for over $200. What's the difference?

You're paying for a brand that has good word of mouth-ability, that's it.

I tend to go the middle course. I like nice, well-made clothes but am not all about the brand. IMO, Lucky Jeans are superior to many of the others. They fit me better and do not get streteched out at all. My second favorite jeans are american eagle because they have a nice wash that can be used to go with almost any shirt for any occasion. BR is my favorite for long-sleeved shirts. For those of you that think there is no difference though, I would have to disagree. I used to not think so, but I guess I changed my mind with time once trying them. For shoes I like Steve Maddens, which aren't expensive, but look nice. For business suits I prefer Calvin Klein. Their designs are really slick, with a light-weight material which helps them last a long time. Plus, I have a broad chest/shoulders, and they are the best first for me. The Italian designers tend to tailor their shoulders for people that don't lift weights.

I'm all for quality, but come on -- price doesn't always mean quality.

I remember being a freshman in college and getting my first store credit card. It was for Dillards, DH Holmes, Parisienne, or some-such upscale department store (for my area, anyway). I went nuts and paid $75 for a Ralph Lauren Polo shirt that was on the clearance rack -- it was regularly $185 or some such ridiculous price. Mind you this was before a lot of you were born, so it was a lot of money for a shirt. P Especially for someone as poor as me. I think I lost sleep over that purchase, as it went against my upbringing and "standard of living" at the time, but I was out on my own and away from home, trying to "re-invent" myself as a lot of young people do when they enter the world on their own. Anywho, the shirt lasted maybe a season, then it developed holes in the seams. That's the last time I paid that kind of money for a shirt. I'm currently at a financial level in my life that I licouldli buy $300 shirts if I wanted to, but again I think I'd lose sleep over it. It's just not me, and I don't understand the mentality.

I'm all for quality, and no doubt SOME more expensive things are made better than others. I'm not saying spend $9 on a pair of Dollar General jeans (although if that's fine with you, that's great), but do you [ie5ae5d427a]really[/ie5ae5d427a] believe a pair of $250 jeans is going to be of higher quality than a pair of $50 Levi's? No, sorry to break it to ya, but you're a sheep if you believe that.

AE isn't too bad I guess, my wife and teenage daughter (and my older kids in their 20's) like AE stuff although they've got NOTHING in there that attracts me at all. I like Eddie Bauer myself. Their jeans fit me better than anything I've tried, including Levi's, and they're like $40 if you catch them on sale or use an online coupon. The wife and I probably buy most of our clothes from EB, as they've been some of the most rugged and well-made clothes we've bought. Yeah, they can be a little pricier than your Sears and JC Penney stuff, but not THAT much more, and they are good stuff. So while I don't have a problem paying a little more for a quality product, when you get to the point of $300 hoodies and $250 jeans, please don't kid yourself into thinking you're buying better quality or that your clothes aren't being made in some of the same 3rd world sweatshops as the stuff that the rest of us wear. You're actually paying for a brand and some level of social acceptance.

JUNIOR6886

28-01-2007 14:25:26

Im not really one for expensive clothes most of the time. A band shirt and black pants and im good to go....
my Fallen Chris cole signature jeans are my most expensive pants and they were a gift

Dave82

28-01-2007 15:31:10

I agree with you DMorris about EB. They are a little more pricey, but i swear they are durable and the seams dont come loose, the fabric doesnt wear as much, less prone to holes, etc.

I think finding a good value is important. $350 jeans arent bought for quality. But like i said before, there are worse things that you can be doing. And none of the guys here on this forum (that i know of) are starving their children so they can have these clothes. While i disagree, there are worse things people can be doing.

=====================

I just wanted to address what someone said about how people who can afford clothes should NOT shop at the Salvation Army because those clothes are for people who really cannot afford anything else.

Yeah, that comment kinda makes sense. I can see that arugment a little. If you honestly could afford to shop in a standard store, but prefer to shop at the Salvation Army (either to save even more money, get authentic vintage style, contribute to "recycling," or whatever reason)....... then one way I think to help balance that would be to donate clothes back to them when you are done. (not tathered, old holey clothes, but you get the picture).

Allen626

28-01-2007 16:29:22

When you buy Bape and stuff like that you KNOW that the quality is not what you are paying for. It is the brand name. Some people are in groups in which most people wear that brand and it is just peer pressure. Maybe not direct peer pressure where you would get made fun or or even looked down upon if you didn't, but when all your friends are wearing bape you start to wear bape.

Once you grow up you start to get out of that phase of your life, or you just eternally live in ignorance. Or maybe you understand the association and you buy the clothes knowing that it is stupid but you want to prove that you have the money, or the class, or that you belong to the group that wears that type of clothes.

TryinToGetPaid

28-01-2007 16:38:37

I buy Ralph Lauren, Polo, and Nautica khaki pants. Along with different brands of polo shirts and button up shirts.

[quotebd85274290="mnx12"][quotebd85274290="ilanbg"]What ever happened to jeans at Target and shirts that come in packs of three?[/quotebd85274290]Exactly, I wouldn't pay more than $20 for a pair of pants. And not because I am poor or out of fashion, it's because i am not a moron that pays $500 for the same type of material.[/quotebd85274290]

Which is the point of advertisting... to convince the customer that you're offering something better than everyone else, when in fact, it is really the same. Look at the crap Abercrombie sells and then compare it to another company that offers the same style (lets say American Eagle) but have their company logos removed and then ask a customer to tell the difference. Its like the Pepsi challenge, but with clothes.

Wolfeman

28-01-2007 21:34:15

Oh yeah, I totally agree with you. But what can you do shrug ? It will eventually hit them sooner or later, that the $3000 they spent on 10 pairs of jeans could have paid off their car insurance payments, their credit card bills, and a semester's worth of books, but hey, at least they look cool while they're broke roll

I always take any clothes that I/we get that we don't want to keep to The Salvation Army, before I used to buy from them too. It's just the right thing to do (to me anyway).

Some people are brought up without any money worries and their parents only buy expensive items or brand name items, so they grow up with the same viewpoint. Some people are brought up with lots of money problems, will take whatever they can get and appreciate clothing for what it really is; a necessity, and some people grow up somewhere in between.

I don't think I could justify paying more than $30 for a pair of Jeans/Trousers/Cords etc, $45 on Shoes/Trainers, $20 on T-shirts, $25 on Jumpers/Sweaters/Hoodies and maybe $50 on Jackets/Coats etc.

I do have penchant for jackets and coats so that's about the only thing I'd "splurge" on.

Clothes are clothes. As long as they serve their purpose why does it matter if they were bought from a charity shop or given to you by your brother-in-law's, wife's, sister's, cross-dressing aunt?

mnx12

I would probably pay up to $65 for shoes, because I buy one pair and wear them for about 2-3 years. Then with jackets/sweaters I would probably only pay $35, as cold as it gets here, I hate wearing them...

theysayjump

28-01-2007 23:11:40

Yeah I've only got one pair of Jeans that I got two years ago and one pair of Trainers I got just under 3 years ago. They're both shredded and ripped to shit, but they still do what they need to.

Plus, the worn out, scruffy look is cool, kids.

hehehhehe

29-01-2007 00:26:23

For some people, it's cool to to shop at thrift shops and salvation army stores for vintage clothing. (It's the Urban Outfitters look for you mallrats but it's more genuine.) Problem is, most of the good stuff is already gone... Anyway, what's cool just depends on the crowd you hang with, and we all spend more money than others in different aspects of our lives.

Some people have to buy many suits and dress clothes, which are more expensive than those $300 hoodies or whatever.

He only has old rare bape products, he hardly buys anymore. Recent Bape is garbage compared to the old OG stuff. U get these stuff from BWS NY or now called "Bape New York". Its in district soho. Or u can buy from Japan resellers or if u have friends/hookups. He has some items that are very rare and sell for a lot now. keeping some of the more limited items and then selling them make mad profit.
