Pretty much, I have it so it starts up into yellow dog, but in yellow dogs drop down menu, there is an option to switch over to the game os.

<You'll need to burn as an image to DVD+R or DVD-R.

Easy official guide I used. [=http//www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/installation/ydl5.0_ps3_guide.pdf]Easy official guide I used.

You'll also need a USB keyboard and a USB mouse will make it a hell of a lot easier.

How fast is it. Pretty fast? Anyone know how much RAM a PS3 has?

Im thinking of doing it, but I dont have an extra USB keyboard and mouse and it looks complicated

Killer722

Yes it's fast. Hell of a lot faster then the PS3 browser. PS3 has 512MB of RAM, but the only 256MB is accessible at the moment.

Oh nice, so think its worth it doing it?

What's the purpose of that...?

Honest question...

To add features and make the PS3 closer to becoming the centerpiece to your living room as boasted. You can even write CD's.

Cant you download games to and boot the ISO?

Killer722

One downside of the whole Linux on PS3 is that the PS3 allows no access to graphics acceleration, so you can't for example... have a N64 emulator that will perform as well as the XBOX1 because of this (not sure if you can even run an n64 emu on it because I heard someone tried SNES emulation on it and it worked fair but it suffered from occasional frameskipping and sound glitches).

In other words, it's great for casual computer usage... But don't expect a "PS3MC" or to play any graphic intensive games on it unless someone can figure out a workaround to actually use the PS3's graphic potential.

why not just use your computer..
seems like a lot of unnecessary work

Yeah... I don't really see the huge upside into doing this...Yeah...it's cool and all, but what's the real point?....Other than emulation, I'd just rather use my PC for anything else I can think of doing with it.

no offense to anybody btw

I wouldn't say it's nerdy...Anyone can follow on screen GUI instructions... The point of doing this is convenience. Some people need it more than others.

so can you run ps3 games while in linux?

Allen626

No. PS2 can run linux too. This is really nothing more then a gimmick. You can't even use the graphical features I doubt even watching a movie would work and forget HDTV content.

Sort of. You just go to applications > system tools > Boot PS3 game OS and you're set.

oh.... well thats pretty cool then i guess.... so its basicly like xbmc for a ps3?

If I get this, will I be able to play xvid files off of an external HDD? How about network it to my PC wirelessly so I don't need the HDD plugged into the ps3.

No. Linux doesn't have access to the GPU, therefore a Media Center or console emulation (other than NES/SNES with some glitches) is NOT POSSIBLE.

Hmm.. if anyone has a list of cool things you can do with this distribution of linux on the PS3, feel free to post it. Right now all I can see is

- Browse the web on Firefox
- Chat on AIM
- Maybe emulate NES/SNES ?

Anything a PowerPC-based system running similar specs can do (except that GPU functionality has been crippled on the PS3).
