i am going to buy an iphone this week. my freebie money has come in at the right time ).

Cingular is still GSM.. Verison is CDMA. So it wouldn't matter.

I don't know much about cell phones. What does that mean exactly?

speaking of phones idk if I should make another thread so I wont, anyway I am in need of a cell phone what service should I go with. The rest of my family has sprint and their customer service has been so shitty with overcharging for things we never had.

It's the just the type of network cellphones use. GSMs are the most popular around the world. CDMA is the kind that sprint uses and I guess Verizon too. If you have a CDMA phone, you can't use it on GSM network and vis versa.

With the features and technology it has, it's not really that expensive. I'm disappointed they waited until June and don't offer a bigger HD though.

The iPhone is all hype. Its massive too...

I think the iPhone looks amazing. My Verizon contract is over sometime in November and I can say for sure that I'll have one the day after. The price is a little bit high, but I'd rather pay $599 for a phone that I really want than ~$300 for another smartphone I'm not completely satisfied with. And who knows, the price might drop some in the next 9 or so months.

I'm sticking with my Sprint phone from that contest...

I don't worry too much when it comes to phones. I call people with them and as long as the service is good and it has a nice battery life, I'm fine with the phone I have.

I have had Verizon for years. Wouldn't switch for anything. I've never had a problem with them. However, heard nothing but complaints from people on other networks. My brother is on his third network and only had a cell for 1.5 years (never tried verizon), same with my uncle.

Don't get the iphone new. Get it through a freebie offer or wait 3-6 months and save yourself a few hundred dollars. new phones always drop in price quick, regardless of how cool they might be.

I'm with you on this.


I dont know how most people are, but me, my phone gets dropped etc. You use your phone a lot and unlike an ipod, a cell phone you are constant fumbling with, hurrying to answer a call (usually the case when it was dropped).

Dropping a Nokia is one thing.... because it can take it and also a few dings on the case doesnt upset you. Plus you know you'll get a new phone in 6-12 months.


But this thing..... man, think about how you're gonna feel when it hits the pavement!

If you are the type of person who doesnt drop your phone then fine.

I jsut think, you're gonna get this thing and three months later a better version is gonna be out. Story of technology, i know i know. But i just think this isnt worth it. Or at least wait a while.

The Razrs (CRAP WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE THIS PHONE TO BEGIN WITH?? HUH????) were 500. Then slowing they came down. Last year i could have gotten $29 BACK from Cingular for getting that shit piece if i had no standards.


This Apple ipod phone is cool, but i'd hold off if you really wanted it in the first place.

for the price tag, its not worth it... it looks nice though.

it would be have been much better if they just included phone compatibility and put it under the hard drive based ipod line. i can only see the most loyal ipod owners buying this one, and people who can easily spend that kind of money.

the rumors that i've been hearing alot is microsoft is planning on including phone compatability for the 2nd gen zune and some microsoft employees are hinting towards some kind of phone support in the near future

well i think its too expensive for the capacity.. you're buying it for the portable multimedia functionality (unless you like having 2 mp3 players on your person).. With 4 gigs, you can store about 4 movies (or 8 tv episodes) and that would fill the device up.

i'm not knocking it down.. flash capacity is great and all, but the technology is expensive and is still slowly growing to reasonable capacity for multimedia.. but for now, i would stick with a 30gb player with added phone functionality for 250 or even better an 100gb player for the same price as the iphone 4gig.

if you guys wait untill June of '08 the price on that phone will drop considerably. I remember people paying $300-400 for RAZR's when they first came out, and 15 months later you could get one for free with a contract.

As for me 8gb isn't enough space for all of my music. I'll stick with my 60 gb ipod in the left pocket and my armstrong phone in the right thank you.

seriously, don't u think in June of 08, apple will already come out with a 2nd gen. I'm think towards Jan/Feb of 08 we should see the 2nd gen.
Just imagine all the upgrade from the first gen.

If you have money to spend then you might as well buy it. If money is tight then you might want to explore your options on finding the cell phone more suitable to your needs.

Like other in that link have said, you can't really design a full LCD-Phone and have it look different. That's like saying "You stole my copyright qwerty keyboard!" How else is Apple supposed to design it?

They were in negotiations with Cisco long before the phone was released. Papers were drawn up to formalize the agreement, however, Cisco wanted to still be able to promote their POS iPhone, and Apple decided that they wanted exclusivity on the name, banking on the fact they could buy out Cisco's complaint (which is what will happen in the end).

can this phone work over the sprint network? I know its being marketed under cingular, but does "unlocking" it have any potential.

you cannot unlock any phone to the sprint network. only gsm phones can be unlocked ie cingular, tmobile... so no, you cant use this phone on the sprint network... i think i might move to cingular this phone is really slick

I was talking about this with some friends tonight. Cingular almost certainly paid a huge (HUGE) licensing fee to be the exclusive provider for the iPhone. Think about that meeting, where the Cingular execs had to decide whether to pony up the cash to Apple to be the sole provider

I agree but there are many non businessmen/women who have treos as well. Hell my mom and my sister, neither whom work, also have a treo. I still think the blackberry's still have the largest share of corporate use. While working for MNC's I never saw anyone carry around a treo and more often then not saw an employee with a company supplied blackberry.

The treo is more of a of a non corporate smart phone. A lot of doctors and lawyers will buy these phones to have the latest gadgetry and to make themself feel important with email features.

I dont think the iphone will try to compete with the blackberry as its impractical to replace or even take market share away from a well known branded product like the blackberry.

The iphone can't make a dent into corporate service as it is mainly used as a multimedia device no matter how much you talk up the smart features. A phone represnts who you are. An exec carrying an iphone doesnt seem prudent at this point.

Therefore Iphone will have to market toward the younger generation who demanded that a phone play like an ipod. Apple's asmbitions aren't even really that great as they only intend to grab 1% of the market share.

This is where change will happen though. The popularity of the iphone once it's released will have a calming effect on the market. People will realize they can do more with this phone then just play music and take pics. Apple will also be watching closely on how they can better their product to move into that corporate realm. They could even market a new product called the Iphone enterprise version with even greater amount of apps suited for business needs.

This is just the begining. They just needed to get their foot in the door. I just hope we haven't seen the best the iphone can offer already as it does have a few flaws. Hopefully Apple is serious about conquering the mareket in the future and can improve their phone based on customer needs.
