firewire is faster than USB, but it depends on what you want to do with it.
before you decide ask yourselves these questions
a) How many files are going to be transferred back/forth between the computer?
b) Do I REALLY need to fork out the extra $$?
Firewire is really only needed if you are constantly transferring files back adn forth AT THE SAME TIME. USB can do this but does so at a much slower rate (firewire is curently 200% faster than USB 2.0) so it really depends on what you're going to do with it.
The best bet is to stick with USB unless you absolutely have to switch to firewire. Firewire is more expensive but would be worth the buy if you find USB is too slow.
USB transfer rate 400mbps
Firewire transfer rate 800mbps
hope this helps.
Sounds good! I found some FireWire cards for like $4 on eBay...so I should buy a USB2 card? Most of my stuff is USB so I think that would be my best bet...

I dunno... a $4 firewire cards sounds good if you don't have USB 2.0 support. My flash based mp3 player doesn't support USB 2.0 (I do not know why not) and it takes A LONG TIME to transfer files to it.

if you can get a card for $4 go for it, but a USB card would still be handy (not many devices currently support firewire compared to the amount that support USB 2)
so i guess just get both, i dont really think the firewire would be all that important for you unless you transfering a massive amount of files (like over 1000 at one time)

i come from the world of video editing and i can tell you this -- without firewire, do not expect to edit any home videos.

who said he wanted to edit videos??
firewire has NOTHING to do with editing (that's your computer) firewire just transfers data from your computer to your device and vise versa.

but firewire is an essential part of DV editing.

with USB 2.0 you can... but seriously there doesn't need to be a heated argument over this.. all i'm trying to prove is that USB is more supported than firewire.. not because USB is better but because it has been around longer. FireWire will most likely dominate the marker in the near future because of its current speed and promising future speed, so it really depends on what MX wants to do.. i was just showing him both sides and I really dont care which one he picks, and which ones you guys use
i was just confused when tech said that it was essential with video editing, i'm really tired and i thought he edited via firewire, lol my mistake -P so sorry if i came across as rude or anything, i didn't mean to..
What do you guys use to transfer files to your iPods?

My USB 2.0 is slighly faster than FireWire 400 (which Is what the iPods use, not Firewire 800, correct me if im wrong). I do notice a slight difference in speed when transferring music. I would think that FireWire 400 is faster (overall its been said that its fasters) but in my case USB2.0 is faster.

I'm evil and use USB 2.0 at home. However, I do have a firewire port, but I haven't tried to compare the transfer rates. I think I have a project for this evening. I will let you guys know how it works out.
(I know I have both, because I built my computer myself. w00t!)
