I purchased a Vista Premium Ready laptop at the end of september. I believe the cutoff date for a free upgrade is after 10/31/06. I went through the form and entered all the info, and it all went alright.

My question comes when I send in my product receipt what are the odds that they find out I purchased the machine much earlier than the cutoff date? The date (9/24/06) is on there and everything, but do you think they'll look at it, since it was very possible my machine was sold after that date?

Should I waste my stamp?

In my experience, those types of offers are hard to collect on even when you're eligible. I can't imagine that they wouldn't check the date. That said, it's not even 40 cents; can't hurt to try.

You're a little vague. Is that date set by MS, or the laptop brand?

I ask, because I registered with Sony for the upgrade, and it was after that date, plus I think registration is still open with them. Not sure how it will play out, but I got the impression that I only have to submit a serial, and they do the rest. Seemed like I'd get it, but who knows. They'll contact me now.

Well I mean i purchased the computer b4 microsoft decided to give free upgrades to ppl who bought PC's this Holiday season. Anything after 10/31 is eligible, mine was bought b4 then. The online order went fine, but they require you to mail them a receipt in order to complete your order......registration is still open..duh...i know that....i just mean will they catch that I'm technically not eligible...

I did in fact get this, and I never sent my proof of purchase even though they asked me for it a number of times.

I tend to wonder if the product key may have been flagged.

I worried about this when I got my VAIO business upgrade disc too. I noticed the invoice from Gratis was a few days past the upgrade submission cutoff date, and so I "forgot" to send it. They still mailed it, and I haven't heard a peep out of anyone, but I now wonder if the key is still good. shrug

Anyhow, I have a 915 chipset, so I won't even have Aero (unless Intel comes through). So, now I don't even know if it's worth doing. (

My lappy is "Vista Premium Ready" for whatever that means, and came w/ drivers from Gateway too (the upgrade that is)....So I think I would have Aero, but I don't really know to be honest. I'm not planning on upgrading until I feel I need a good format anyway.

What do you mean until Intel comes through? I thought Areo depended on your RAM and video card?

Does Intel's new 945 (Santa Rosa) chipset support Aero?

Also, why would your key expire?

I think hardware-wise you'll be fine.

Well, I have integrated graphics. ;)

The Intel 900/910/915 (More?) graphics chipsets actually [i6f535531a7]can[/i6f535531a7] support Aero to an extent hardware-wise, but not well enough (depending on who you listen to). So, compatible drivers were phased out during the beta stage. Retail Vista won't just run Aero on them unless Intel releases a new driver, which they are not likely to do.

Yep.

I'm not sure it will, but I'm a little worried for the reasons stated above.

I just ran Microsoft's little Vista Scan thing to see which version is best. There are no issues and it claims that Aero will run fine w/ it.

With my Dell, I was part of the free upgrade thing. It wasn't free though, it cost me $10 shippinig. I got it fairly quickly. I figured not bad to get Business Edition for $10. I haven't installed it, I'm too scared...

Huh...My shipping was free, but I only got home premium.....I just haven't installed it b/c I don't feel like doing a full format, and I never have good luck doing an upgrade over top of an existing OS.
