Freshman Year @ College: What You Should Know!!!

So, i decided to make a useful thread for all these seniors in high school. I know it's still a little early, but i the College Acceptance Thread inspired me to do so.
Please everyone add what you can think of!!!
-learn the about dropping classes and how it is STILL on your transcript, has a time-frame/deadline dates, and you are still charged financially for the dropped class.
-if you are going to underage drink (once again, i'm not condoning this), DO IT IN YOUR DORM HALL. Most dorms have a separate judiciary counsel and if you are a resident of the particular hall, they do not report it to the police. They handle it internally. This may vary with your school, so check; but it holds true for most schools (otherwise they would be reporting A LOT of students to the police station). Of course it will still be on your record and i dont know how it affects getting into grad school...
-do not date girls in your dorm unless you are really sure you like them a lot and you are REALLY sure they are stable. Seeing them the rest of the semester all the time sucks if things ended poorly. Plus that one girl will talk shit about you if you dumped her, so that ruins things with other girls in the dorm for you. So hold off on girls in your particular dorm until you know them all. Same thing with sleeping with them.
-use protection. always.
-first day of class, introduce yourself to the professor after class and shake his/her hand. Make a point to show up to class ON TIME and participate in class. Stop in and utilize office hours. You should be on good terms with your professors. If you need an extension/make-up a test, they will not even consider it if you are late to class/miss classes, never participate, do poorly on tests, etc. Plus if you wanna go to grad school you can never have too many good references.
-Make sure your cell phone ringer is off during class (not even vibrate, completely silent). Phones ringing during lecture are not only disruptful but very disrespectful to the students and professor (and most will directly point this out to you). I am in law school and if a cell phone goes off, you are kicked out of class. After the teacher yells at you in front of everyone of course.
-Most dont regularly collect homework. It is up to you to keep up. It adds up at midterms and final, so dont get behind. Most of you will be leaving home for the first time staying on your own, so keep yourself in check. Dont spend all of your time partying and fall behind. You will regret it later. Just because there is a party every night does not mean you should not set limits for yourself.
-scheduling classes at 1pm kinda gives you an excuse to party all the time. Maybe try schduling a 9am class on tues and thurs to keep you in check.
-Use the gym.
-most times if you finish a paper early and take it in to your professor during his/her office hours, they will correct it and let you re-write it. Easy A then!
-learn from your first test the teacher's style and if the test is based more on lecture or the book so you know where to spend the most time studying.
-talk to students and find out the low-down about professors.
or use www.ratemyprofessor.com
I swear in my experience, 99% of their ratings are dead on. Your university might have it's own rating system by students too, so check their website.
-Do NOT buy books from the bookstore unless you have to. Go online, and do it as early as possible!!!!!! As soon as you register, call the bookstore and find out what books you need and then do a search for them. So much cheaper used. The college bookstore has them used..... but used in a bookstore means only $10 off.
www.directtextbook.com is a GREAT site that shows prices of several sites all compiled into one!
-They will pester you like crazy on campus to sign up for credit cards and offer you stupid t-shirts, radios, water bottles, etc to get you to sign up. Just be careful because i have seen a lot of people get caught up and rack up debt really quickly.
-Call your parents every so often. They probably miss you and are worried about you. So even if just for a minute, call and say hello. Or write an email.
-First semester DO NOT WORK, not even part-time. Spend it learning the ropes and meeting people. If you need a part-time job, then start second semester that way you will have a better understanding of time and how much you need to study and relax.
-If you have a midterm/exam set your alarm clock, cell phone alarm, and anything else.
-roommates will have conflicts. Try and get along. Dont pick over every little thing. Make sure you guys have an understanding of your rules and stick to them. Keep on good terms with your roommate because..... just trust me.
-college is a great time to meet new people. It kinda sucks if you go into it with a long term relationship. This is because I swear to God, I SWEAR TO GOD you will learn more about yourself freshman year in college than you have so far your entire life. You will not be the same person you were in high school. You will be exposed to new types of people and things. Most people change because they have a better understanding of the way things really are in life and get a sense of how limited the people were in your high school days.
-college is filled with so many different types of people. you are bound to make friends and all different kinds. The dorm though..... well dorm life becomes a mini-high school. This is inevitable. So dont spend all your time in the dorm and party only with your dorm people.
-If you have siblings, make sure you still keep in contact with them.
-People steal a lot in college. Be careful.
-Walk to class, do not take the campus bus. Get the exercise, fresh air, and see new faces. If it is raining/snowing and you are going to class, LEAVE EARLY because the buses will be late and crowded. If you are a girl, walk in groups for night classes.
-when you first move in the dorm, if you are in the dorm room, keep the door wide open. People stop in a say hi, great way to meet people at first. Or be watching a movie and have the door open. In a few mins your dorm will be filled with people.
-If you are not in the dorm room, make sure the door is locked. Even if just taking a shower or even running to the bathroom quickly. And make sure your roommate is locking the door or your stuff is going to end up stolen.
-If you have an hour in-between class, study your notes. Studying here and there adds up. Plus that means you dont have to go back and study as much in the evening. It's best to study the notes right after class because the material is fresh and your brain is still in that mode. If you go get something to eat and see people and talk etc, you will never study in that one hour interval between class. So just make a habit to sit somewhere and study.
-Before midterms/finals go to the library and spend as much time studying there as you can. Get out of the dorm and turn off your phone. Force yourself to study and concentrate. It is worth it. As soon as midterms and finals are over you can party. And those are the fun partys. If you dont study you will do poorly and then you wont be able to have fun partying because you will feel shitty.
-If you are going to get drunk, do so in good company.
-dont hang with the wrong crowd. They'll pull you down.
That's all i can think of right now. I'll add more when it comes to me in bits and pieces.
An old saying
In Freshman year you can Study, Sleep, and Party.
But you can only do two of the three.

All of that is excellent advice! As a staff member at a University (and having been a student at the same University), I only have to add the following
- Know where to look for campus technology resource outages. Most colleges and universities offer storage space on their servers, but they are not always 100% available. It would suck to find out at the last minute that you can't turn in a project because the file systems are down. Better yet...keep anything important on a thumb drive. ;)
- If you are female, please find out if your campus offers after-dark escort services, especially if you have a late class. I took Astronomy one semester and it was quite scary walking across campus in the dark. Predators are EVERYWHERE, no matter how safe you think your campus is.
If there is not an escort service, use your cell phone and call someone local as you're walking; constantly update the person on your location (i.e., "I'm by the chemical engineering building, right now, walking towards...").
- The freshman 15 does not have to be true. In addition to walking, be aware of where you are eating. Sure, dorm food doesn't sound appetizing, but it'll keep you in your jean size better than any local fast food place. Give it a shot...it'll save you money and your figure.
- Remember to make friends and have fun. Don't let college pass you by in a blur and frenzy of work work work. Find a good balance. )
And GOOD LUCK!

What a slut.

Oh yeah, know what resources you college has for you. Most offer free counseling. That includes couples and group counseling as well.
They have career services and services to inform you about the different majors and fields.
A lot to offer!

- Go to class. I cannot stress this enough. EVERY single "things to know for college" thread I have ever seen has included this.
- Orientation week, meet everyone, everyone. It's cool to find a good group of friends early on.
- If you're a BIO major or plan on going on a pre-med path then study study study. Party, at most, once a week. becoming a doctor is ALOT of work.
- Day before classes, walk to where your classes are so that you don't get lost on the 1st day of classes.
- STOP playing video games. Play them sparingly. There's a guy I know who got sent away because eventually he stopped going to classes and barely left his room because of World of Warcraft
- GO to the GYM
- Meet upperclassmen and take their advice to heart.
- Join some clubs and stick with atleast 2. Clubs are a good social aspect and help keep you part of the campus.
- There's going to be plenty of food available if you're a freshmen. Don't eat everything in site. Try to eat healthy(as hard as it can be) so that you don't gain the freshmen 15(it's real..... look through facebook pictures of someone's freshmen year at the beginning and at the end)
- There's usually always a party at the frats or going on somewhere. As much as you want to and as much as easy it is.... don't party all the time.
- Orientation week is crazy. People hook up.....alot because as the 1st week of college they think that's the complete norm of college. To meet random people and hook up. If you are male, take this to heart, as around the 3rd week this will not be true.
- Pimp out your dorm room.... and get memory foam(best decision ever)
DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT FACEBOOK PEOPLE BEFORE YOU MEET THEM. it'll just make actually meeting them slightly awkward. But gladly accept friend requests.
but once again the most important thing is to NEVER skip class. You're paying big $$$ to learn, not sleep, play video games, nor procrastinate.
other than that, you'll eventually learn through time and experience how to balance the 50% fun and 50% study part.

find the kid at school who makes fake ID's. Maybe because I am drunk right now, but trust if your school is big on the bar scene. You need one. School such as Ohio University, Colorado State, CU, ASU, Wisconsin, any school based in a city, or any school in florida. A fake ID is necessary.

To Sum Up Everything Said here...
"There's a time and a place for everything, and it's called college..."
But for real, Don't skipp classes, no matter how easy they are, I got a B in a class that I already knew everything we learned, and I was teaching the teacher new things the first day just because for about 2 weeks I was buys partying, i'd stay up way too late, be hung over, go to my first 2 classes and then decide the 3rd one wasn't important enough, so i'd sleep until practice... I should have got an easy A, but instead I got a hard B (...
Just don't let yourself fall into bad routenes... I started out the semester great, but then started staying up till 2 or 3, sleeping as soon as classes were out, and then going to practice when I had to, or when we were out of practice sleeping until supper time, then i'd do the same thing the next day, that hurts you big time and you need to stick to normal habits...
So far college has been the best 4 months of my life, i'm having a blast! Just be smart with everything you can, and don't do anything your grandma would be ashamed of...
also, if you are going to have sex with a girl that looks really young or is in high school, if you have any doubts of her lieing about her age, ask her to see her ID before doing anything, to make sure she is 16, and also, don't have sex with a drunk girl, because even if she consents, a drunk person cannot legally consent, even if you are both drunk... i can't think of anything that could be worse at college than getting any type of sexual predator offense filed against you...
Have fun, just be smart )

There were a couple things in there that I didn't follow, but it went alright. If you need money, you get a part time job. There's no way around this if mommy and daddy aren't paying for school/insurance/cell phone/etc.

All awesome advice. For the gamers PLEASE get out of the habit of playing more than 2 hours a day (less, if at all possible).
iloveipods - lol on the facebooking people before you actually meet them, it makes it horribly awkward when you actually meet them. It really cuts down on what you can talk about since you've seen their profile and you know pretty much everything about them.
Also orientation is critical. It doesn't even matter if you live 5 minutes from campus, you meet soooo many people and it's a great buildup to meeting new people and interacting on campus.
Do some form of exercise. ALL of the food in the dining halls is going to look good and it's all you can eat (do not take full advantage of that) so it'll be tempting to fill your tray with everything you see. That freshman 15 will just come quicker for you.
Roommates are critical to get along with. They do not have to be your best friend, but if you're on their bad side they can make your life that much harder. Set ground rules if necessary.
All great advice so far, except the fake ID post, believe me, there's enough alcohol floating around campus for you [i6f514b50b2]not[/i6f514b50b2] to need a fake ID.

I agree... I have no intentions of going greek... But looking back, it will be one the the greatest decisions of my like even once i'm 80. You'll get something that cannot be taught in classes joining social organizations. Go to each house and meet the people. Dont judge off of what you hear around campus.

From my experience, very few. I never did because I was dumb and bought a 17" widescreen laptop that weighed 10 pounds so it wouldn't fit on the desk and hard to carry around. The reason why there were so few people that had them was because of engineering and it's hard to type math symbols and chemistry equations. I guess a tablet would work well.

I would say at least 50%. It makes it a lot easier when searching through notes for finals when looking for specific things rather than flipping through pages. The desks often small, especially in large lecture halls, but I have never had a problem bringing my 17" laptop to class.

If you're taking a lot of notes - written, like for a psychology course where nothing technical is in it, then a laptop would be a really good thing to bring.
I just can't stand carrying around my laptop especially fitting it with my books.

Honestly it depends on your major. My gf is a Psychology major and she said 80% uses laptops (either their person, or one the university loans out for 4 hours). It is so much easier than having all these papers to sort through. Great too because you can email your notes to other people in the class and they'll email you theirs so you see if you missed anything. You wont be in on that system if you take hand notes bc photocopying takes too much.
If you are engineering, it isnt going to work. Math and physics cant be done quickly on a computer. And tablets are too much.... when you want to study math, physics, chemistry you need it on paper. So printing it off a tablet make it "why did i even put it on here to begin with"
JUST MAKE SURE YOU EMAIL YOURSELF A COPY if you do this, because things happen, computers crash, get stolen, etc.
-always email your self a copy of your notes and papers that you turn in. That way of the paper gets lost, just download it from your email and you're set to go.

-scholarships can save your ass. You may not think you need money now, or you may think that a $200 scholarship isn't worth much, but get a couple of those and your textbooks are paid for for a semester.
If anyone needs or is looking for scholarships, scholarships.com is a good website.
If anyone is considering signing me up, email me for a ref link (each ref gives me a chance at a $1K scholarship).

[quotee1fcd0a687="Dave82"]first day of class, introduce yourself to the professor after class and shake his/her hand. Make a point to show up to class ON TIME and participate in class. Stop in and utilize office hours. You should be on good terms with your professors. If you need an extension/make-up a test, they will not even consider it if you are late to class/miss classes, never participate, do poorly on tests, etc. Plus if you wanna go to grad school you can never have too many good references.[/quotee1fcd0a687]
i can't stress how important this is to do. If you have a poor rapport with your professor you may have a tough time getting a favor when you need one. Also good point about going in to see professors during their office ehours. This will be easier in a smaller class size however. If you have a very large class size it may be difficult to get noticed.
It's also very important to build a routine. Try to stick to it at all costs. Something like
Adjust accordingly to the demands of your major and own personal hobbies[/colore1fcd0a687]
class(9-2)
eat/relax(2-3)
HW/studying(3-430)
Gym(5-7)
eat(730-9)
relax, talk to friends, internet(9-11)
finish up school work and try to sleep by 1.
If you manage to pull a four day schedule(mon-thur) you will have a 3 day weekend. Save the drinking and smoking for weekends. You will plenty of time to party out the weekends.

-Go see your professor at least once throughout the semester during [i55f41b9d7f]office hours[/i55f41b9d7f], not right after the first class. Everyone is going to be doing that so the probability of him remembering you goes down, plus you will sound like a kiss ass. I pulled off a B instead of a B- in one class, and a Fail to a C- in another because I went and saw the profs a time or two.
-Go to the gym and don't eat all of the shit that is available to you. I know plenty of people that gained 15-50lb during their first year, and my school is very fit.
-Save smoking and drinking for the weekends. I am lucky enough to have a Mon-Thur schedule this fall P
-Don't raise your hand at the end of class when the prof asks, "are there any questions?" Us other students don't care and want to leave. Save it for office hours.
-Turn off your cell phone. People can still hear it when its on vibrate.
-Always wear a condom
-Be sensible (know when to use the "I'm in college" card)
-Don't wear your iPod headphone everywhere. Someone you know who is taking the same class as you but at a different time might want to give you some tips on the exam that they just took or tell you about what's going on over the weekend.
That's all I can think of right now.

Anyone have any tips for dealing with roommates? I've never had roommates before and I'm going to have between one and five of 'em this year.

i have mixed emotions about my upcoming freshmen year. i am excited, but at the same time not looking forward to it that much. one of my main concerns is the party factor. don't get me wrong, i like to have a beer or two or three or four every now and then, but i have a feeling i'm going to just lose so much respect for so many people. just looking on facebook and seeing pictures... makes it appear every girl is a slut. don't get me wrong, i'll love to be partying at college and banging these sluts, but it's just kind of sad and pathetic these "good girls" go to school and end up with a beer in their hand in every picture, getting drunk, and doing shit they'll probably regret one day. anyway, school starts in about a month and a half, this thread will help me out a pretty good amount.
i've lived on my own the past two summers with a few roomates. bottom line is communication, compromise, and respect.

Hmm roommates. I personally despise them so I may not be the best person to ask. I feel the best roommates are the ones who have their own friends. The less you can see your rommmate the better.
[quote78a22c4e50="tracemhunter"]-Go see your professor at least once throughout the semester during [i78a22c4e50]office hours[/i78a22c4e50], not right after the first class. Try going more often. You want to to run a B+ or a B into an A or A-. You don't want to have to worry about turning a failing grade into something passible. I myself was able to buld such a positive rapport with my professors that they would come talk to me semesters after the class finished. They would even come ask me on what I felt were effective teaching methods.

I wouldn't be too worried about this. Questions usually only take a few minutes to answer. Plus it shows that you are more interested in learning then getting the f out of the building. The thing you should avoid doing at the end of class is reminding a professor to post HW if he/she forgot to do so. That is something your peers will not appreciate too much. You being the good student you are will go look at the syllabus and will read the next topic anyway.

Gosh theres a lot of info in here, I couldn't read it all.
Just a note....be careful what you have...nothing is safe even behind locked doors...I had hundreds of dollars worth of clothes stolen out of my closet from a locked room.
Always wear flip flops in the shower ;)
Get out and have fun, don't sit in your room all day/night.
Get your work done early so you don't worry about it
SAVE SAVE SAVE your work, never know when there will be a power outage and you'll lose your work.
Don't ask to go to the bathroom, just get up and go - hell sometimes I went out for a smoke in the middle of class
Register your classes early, they fill up fast!
Get your own books, they might come in handy in the future.
Try to get along with your room mate, but if you don't you can always move. I always went with suite living so there were a bunch of us, we had a variety of people...we all got along for the most part. I didn't move into a single until my last year of college.

freshman year i lived in a double with someone who is now one of my best friends. despite being able to live alone, i chose to live with him and two (now three) other people in a house this year. i had a blast and absolutely would not trade that time for anything in the world.
so i like roommates. i feel like i'm the exception. here's my secret to shared housing bliss the golden rule. consider what you would like to see in the ideal roommate, and just BE that. i'm sure this wont work if your roomie is a complete psychopath but i've found that most people respond to it.
honestly all the talk and worry and hemming and hawing about college is not really warranted. millions of kids have been through this and plowed the way for you, all you have to do is hop on and enjoy the ride. college is an amazing time.

I'm at IU currently and I'm loving it here. It's extremely hot outside, but it'll cool off. Last night some friends and I went to CultureFest, which is just some thing about embracing diversity, ate their free food, then came back to our dorms to pregame. My RA is really cool about everything, she just doesn't want to see it or she has to do something. I also have two IUPD officers on my floor, but they basically said have a good time, just be smart and don't give them a reason to bust us.
Anyway, back to last night, I know a couple brothers in Kappa Sigma, so we drank in my room a little bit, then headed out there. The house seems really cool overall, it's the 3rd largest house in terms of square footage in the nation. The guy 2nd in charge of rushing/recruiting is a graduate of Homestead (my high school) and also played tennis with me when I was a freshman. I didn't think I wanted to do a frat, but after talking to Tyler and Austin (guys in charge of rushing), this seems like the kind of house I want to join, if I decide to pledge.
Anyone else that used to be in a frat got any opinions?

Dont order textbooks.
I go to a technical college - after freshmen year - I stopped getting books. You will find many of the books are not needed and you wont open them.
I have saved easily $5000 in textbooks that I would have never opened. I go to a 5 year university that has 3 semesters, that is why book costs are much higher.

As a sophmore this year I want to add a few more things to the list from my personal experience.
-Always where a condom.
-Here's a mythbuster, college students need cars.
-If you see a girl/guy you want to talk to then TALK TO THEM! Meeting new people is major aspect of college.
-If you don't use ratemyprofessor.com you're an idiot.
-If you think the party your going to is going to be crowded then make the smart choice and bring you own cups (this sometimes prevents throwing down on the keg as well).
-Never throw a bong.
-Oh yea and study alot and dont fail out.

At IU freshman can have cars, but you have to park at the football stadium (all the way across campus for me), and then you have to move it for football/basketball games, so it's not really worth it. Next year when I'm in my own house/apartment/fraternity, I'll definitely have my car down here.

I'm going to be biased against Purdue as an IU student, but if you want to go into engineering/technology-related stuff, go to Purdue. If you want to major in business, psychology, journalism, etc, IU is the place to be. My roommate is a sophomore that transferred from U of I and he seems to be liking IU a lot more.
