"Stop stealing my Bandwidth" pic

I was doing a search for artpiece on yahoo images. I came across this site

How is she/he preventing hotlinking? Even when you click on an image from the page itself, it still displays the "steal bandwidth" image.

I just thought that was cool, and i have seen it before but couldnt figure out how this works.

I know what you're talking about though. One time I tried to hotlink an image and I got this goatse picture with text that said "STOP STEALING BANDWIDTH FUCKERS" lolz...

I was looking for the technical reason for how when you hotlink and image it redirects you to that.

It's a referrer hack. Anytime you access an HTTP resource, the location that is linking to it is included in the HTTP header, and is called the referrer.

You can configure most web servers to send a different HTTP response based on referrer match. If the referrer isn't one of your sites, then they get the stolen image response, otherwise they get the actual linked resource.

And yes, the image still consumes bandwidth. But they figure that you'll stop linking to it, and thus the bandwidth with stop. But mostly I see people using it just to deter people using their own images without permission. It's common on eBay, where somebody steals someone else's eBay photos for the same item. Some of the redirected images are pretty obscene too. )

Assuming you or your host is using Apache, you just need to edit/create some .htaccessurl==http://=http:///url rules

Mostly those deal with simply blocking the images (resulting in a broken image link), but the bottom of that last link mentions using image substitution.

Not sure about this technique with IIS, if you're using that (and I hope not).
