Actually that story reads more like a hysteria piece. Nothing but an opinion/editorial. There's nothing of substance there to suggest the IRS is actually planning any such thing, only that the writer believes it "inevitable."

While there are a lot of things I wouldn't put past the IRS, taxing virtual property/cash is unlikely. Now they could certainly tax any capital gains realized from the real-world sale of said property, but not the in-game value itself.

I just don't see it happening...

I am curious how this could possible be enforced. And what about the unemployed that are good at video games? They have to pay more?

It's been discussed a year ago that the IRS would charge tax on Second Life money. Maybe not on this forum but I recall it on some videogame podcasts and sites. I think Engadget or Joystiq had a story a few months ago about it too.

The only reason they would do something like that is if you converted the Second Life "assets" into real money.

This is really weird tho, i mean - claiming tax in virtual money..what good would that do lol. For what we know now the IRS are taxing people in heaven. twisted, always trying to make some bullshit up to claim money.
