so who the FUCK is getting this?

I want to get one, right? duh, who doesnt!!

anyway. so this is a fucking kickass deal right here, but there's only what, 100 of them or something? So, how do you think it's going to work?

Will they?
a) first PAY first GET
b) add it to your cart, you have it
c) some other method

also, you think their servers will be flooded or that they have enough power to hold the masses.

Also x 3, i'll be camping out at bestbuy, should I run to my nearby internet cafe (which happens to be about 100ft (or less) away from bestbuy, lol, and try to purchase this?

The final also, how many of you are going to go for this?

the eMachines computer
the digital camera for $80
the $70 casio keyboard/piano
and the 2GB Sansa Rhapsody music player

the emachines computer is tight because for under $200 you get the computer which has a celeron D processor, 512mb of ram, 15" LCD monitor, and a canon color printer... sweeeet.

last year we were able to return the monitor for the computer and get like most of the price back, which made it an uber sweet deal, but this year, i'll keep the monitor and try to return the printer. Hopefully they'll sell it in three separate pieces.

You can always auction off the 360 on eBay.

Zags1199

22-11-2006 01:36:07

When you add it to your cart, you get a claim code if there are still 360s available. You then have one day to either use the claim code to purchase the 360 or you forfeit your 360. It's on the Buying Tips page.

This item is competing in Amazon Customers Vote, where customers choose which of four products will be offered at a ridiculous discount. You must wait until Thursday and buy via the Amazon Customers Vote Page in order to receive the discount.

YOU MUST BUY IT ON THIS PAGE

http//www.amazon.com/gp/holiday/cv/homepage/002-3447640-7676032

[quote12ec739bd0]
1) The Xbox 360 has won the vote and has been announced. The 3 losing items (Bike, Barbie, Prime Membership) will still be available at a discounted price, although not as low as if they would have won, come Thursday 11am PST. I think the bike for $60 & free shipping is still a great deal in my opinion.

2) The price for the Xbox will be $100 & there will only be 1,000 of them.

3) Shipping cost...looks like it qualifies for Free Super Saver shipping.

4) The sale will start at 11/23/06 Thanksgiving Day
1100 am Pacific Standard Time (CA, OR, WA etc)
1200 noon Mountain Time (CO, UT, WY etc)
100 pm Central Time (TX, OK, IL etc)
200 pm Eastern Time (NY, FL, GA etc)
see map of time zones here...

http//www.worldtimezone.com/time-us12.html

5) Look at the "Buying Tips" section for detailed info regarding how to purchase this deal. The link is located under the pictures of the 4 items up for vote and in the "How This Works" area. Or copy and paste the link below

http//www.amazon.com/gp/holiday.html//ref=cu_vo_hp_htw_htb/104-1765172-3750323?ie=UTF8&id=cv%2Fbuyingtips

6) Having a fast internet connection and a lot of luck will be your best allies. Dial-up users will have a very tough time getting one of these before they sell out.

7) They will sell out very, very fast.

8) This deal has been reported on via news stations, news websites, many forums, even on several cable tv shows. Many, many people know about this.

9) Only a small fraction of these people are posting here on this forum

10) You can not add the 360 to your cart and then come back on 11am pst Thursday morning and purchase it from there at the $100 price.

11) You have to purchase this deal from the main vote page where you currently see the 4 items up for vote. The winning item will be made available for purchase at the correct time on this page.

12) Once it's up for sale you will click on the "Get This Deal" button then it will take you to a screen where you will be asked a simple question that you must answer. This is for security reasons so that bots (automatic buying software) can not be used by cheaters. It might be a simple question like re-entering a series of displayed numbers and letters into a box.

13) Once you answer the question you will be given a purchase code IF there are any of the 1,000 units left. Once you have that purchase code you can relax. You will have until the next day, Friday 11am pst to use this code to purchase the system. Again...once you have this code then your 360 is reserved for you and you can relax and purchase it anytime before 11 am pst the next day.

14)This is the core system. It comes ready to play games right out of the box. It has a single wired controller & basic cables to hook up to the tv. It does NOT have a hard drive, wireless controller, component cables, headset for online gaming. But buying these items seperatly will still keep your overall price below that of a premium Xbox 360 system. Good deal.

15) This will only be shipped to US residents as far as I can tell.

16) You DO NOT need to sync your time over and over and over and over again. If you need to sync your computer time with Amazon's time then fine. But to do it days before the sale and to do it over and over again is silly. Just prior to the sale, log on and sync your time if you need to. Then be on the correct page and hit refresh right around 11am PST until you see the item come up for sale. Simple.

17) Reality check Don't go into this expecting to get one because more than likely you won't. Too many people will be trying to score one of these and the odds are not good. I'm not saying don't try...just be prepared.

18) There are people on these forums giving false information. They think they will increase their chances if they can limit the number of people who know about this or don't know the proceedures. Again...there are so many people who already know about this deal that these attempts will not make any sizeable difference in their odds.

19) If you don't get one it's not the end of the world. At this very second there are millions who wish they had something to eat.

20) Once you get your code then you can buy your 360 but DO NOT use the 1-Click buying system. If you do you will not be directed to your Place Order page as you check out, and you will be unable to confirm that the promotion has been attached to your order.

21) The page you need to be at when the item goes up for sale is...

www.amazon.com/gp/holiday/cv/homepage/104-1765172-3750323

22) No more than one of each offer can be redeemed per household, per customer, per credit card, or per shipping address.

23) You can NOT buy the item now and then expect to get a refund for the difference. This will not work.

24) Each Amazon Customers Vote promotional offer claim code can be used only once.

25) Offers are eligible for Amazon Prime

26) Amazon.com cannot be responsible for unforeseeable mechanical failures of our computer hardware or software that may occur during the ordering process.

27) Terms of Conditions (read these!)

dmorris68

22-11-2006 18:52:00

I'm sure Amazon's server time is NTP synched with the NIST atomic clock. Just sync your PC's time with any atomic time source, and you'll be synched with Amazon, I'm sure.

In Windows XP, double click on the clock in the tasktray, then go to the Internet Time tab. You should be able to sync with the default time.windows.com server, as I just tried it and it worked.

Unless you've disabled this feature, or have a really bad PC clock, XP should be doing this automatically anyway, so you're probably already synched.

EatChex89

22-11-2006 20:12:45

no the windows time server is actually off

amazon.com is synced up to the time.nist.gov so that's what my laptop and computer have been synced to

Umm, no? They're both atomic synchronized. I just synched to both of them and got the exact same result. That's the whole point of time servers. ;)

But it doesn't matter which one you use, as long as it's a valid time server.

maybe because mine was synced up last month?

lol

anyway, the apple server IS a couple mins/secs off from the nist server. At least, when I switched over from apple to nist on my macs, they both changed a little bit.

So if you're using a mac, switch over to the nist!

Dr. Doom

22-11-2006 22:11:31

You don't really have to time sync your computer. Just check the time somewhere other than your computer (ie, wrist watch, cell phone, cable box, etc) and go to Amazon.com right before 11am pst.

Daggoth

22-11-2006 22:13:15

I honestly don't think it matters if it is synched or not. People are going to start refreshing five minutes before it starts and won't stop till they either get it or miss it.

I'm not so hot with computers, but isn't a DoS attack only effective if people send massive amounts of data to a site or attack a specific exploit?

No infact what he is saying is correct. Normally when you DoS attack a site it's always to one page. (Example anything4free.com/forums/index.php) Since everyone is going to press refresh on the same page it can easily act as a dos attack. Though amazon.com is so huge that even a million refreshes wouldn't take it down. They have so many servers that they won't have to worry. If it were to be this site then yes it'd crash in a heartbeat. It may slow down a bit because of all the people refreshing.

Infact I honestly wonder if it'd be smarter to press refresh 2 seconds later after 11 that way all the people get a rush of lag and I go right ahead and pass them up. Though I don't know if this would be the case. Anyone know?

It has nothing to do with the server I don't think. It's just whenever you refreshed. I refreshed 5 minutes before and with 2 seconds in I had the page. I probably have one of the slowest broadband connections here and I'm all the way across the country. It was luck and internet connection for the winners.

Well the Amazon servers were definitely a factor. It really does have to do with the servers to some extent.

No, but I did get the page like 2 or 3 seconds in and it was already sold it. If people in Seattle/Spokane didn't get the page then it's nothing to do with the location. Think about it.

I'll give you an example. In a MMO I used to play, the servers were located in the southwest. People who lived nearest to the servers, ran/attacked the fastest compared to others since there was no maxed out ping. This is why I think that people living nearest to the servers had a better shot than others, the fact that their pages loaded more/faster than the rest.

Although that may be true, I just think the servers that Amazon run on are top of the line servers or atleast they are up there and I don't think they would be effected, ya know? But you are right about that, servers certainly do affect load times to some extent but I just don't think in this instance it did. That's just my opinion though judging from people who got the loading screen and those who didn't.

I agree that they run on the best servers out there, but the amount of advertising they did along with the usual traffic, thats a hella lot of traffic. Even if it didn't take down the server, it consumed most, if not all, of its resources. It is kind of like Trainn servers, they weren't down, but they were running slow as hell the past week. I also agree luck was a major factor, if you happened to refresh five minutes before and then it landed on the screen just on time, then you lucked out.

i almost got the bike, but freakin' it took forever to load so it wouldn't go. i was pissed

everyone who got it got it at 11000000 AM PST

so yeah, if your page didn't load at that time, it was doubtful that you even get it it. because statistically, there is a 99% chance that 1000+ got a refresh on exactly that time. if you follow me.

Not at all, Amazon made money off of this. Not only do they not pay 300 for each core, they only lost around 120 to 130 on each system. Not to mention the people who bought from their site while there to vote and check the stats. This was smart for Amazon. They definetly made a lot of money from this.
